The Hummer H1, an SUV initially produced by AM General under the Hummer brand and eventually General Motors, was introduced in 1992 and was intended to appeal to consumers looking for a rugged, off-road vehicle. However, despite its impressive capabilities, the H1 failed to sell well due to a number of factors we explore in this video.

Have you done the Chrysler ME412? Its the supercar that would've come out at the same time as the SLR McLaren, used a Mercedes engine, was built in less time, for less money, had better performance and handling than the SLR, and even cost less. Shortly, it absolutely humiliated Mercedes, so they killed it, cause they owned Chrysler at the time.

It's great that you praise the vehicle for it's incredible strengths, whereas if you discuss the vehicle with any motor hobbyist they'll usually laugh the entire vehicle off. Love it or hate it, the H1/Humvee is one of the most iconic vehicles on the planet. I'm not a huge fan of the later models but I respect where the story started. And that dirty big engine in the H1/Humvee just sounds so deep and amazing.

People who are not into cars said the same thing about Hummer when it came out. 70k USD in 1992 adjusted for inflation is 146k USD now, so Hummer EV is much cheaper in base model than Hummer (when it came out - First edition was 110k, base model is supposed to be 80k). Obviously prices now have markups and everything but for 70k USD in 1992 you could buy much more than inflation makes it look like

@stuchbrosmnore8627 that's usually due to the format the 1000 hp car may be used for, Drifting and Drag racing don't care about high top speeds. There's a reason why the factory 800 HP Dodge Demon first comes with a limiter at about 170 MPH, the super grippy and low endurance tires it comes with cannot withstand higher speeds. Now, land speed record cars are a completely different breed.

Additional comment from a former H1 hummer owner. Back in 2005, AM general reached out to it's existing customers to find out how much more they would be willing to pay for a new truck if it met all of the upcoming emissions requirements. They were upfront when they mentioned how many millions of dollars in investment would be needed to meet these requirements and with a truck that is made maybe 1,000/year the cost of the new emissions passed onto a new customer was going to be very hefty, think it's not worth it anymore. AM general didn't give up on the brand and tried to come up with other alternatives such as buying a truck without an engine and a customer could add their own, but even with that the demand wasn't great enough to do. If it weren't for GM stepping up with the duramax, the 2006 H1 Alpha would never exist. Today there are some civilian H1's that are being made for sale overseas mainly in the middle east. It's a fascinating vehicle and fun to drive. I did have a few run ins with 'eco warriors' including one person who was using a shopping cart to try and ram the truck over and over but was prevented by the rock rails. The Hummer HOPE program was amazing and many of the Hummer owners I met in those days were some incredible people with unbelievable next level life skills.

As someone who owns an H1 a 97 pre GM hummer, the only thing that really let's it down is the 4 speed transmission, the 4l80e is a tank in its own right but diesel engines like to to have a lot of gears to keep them in their power band. I had My truck was swaped to a p400 engine and the six speed version of the allison 1000 with double overdrive in 2016 and with 38x13.5 inch tires it gets a respectable 12mpg city and 22ish on the highway if you stay right at 55.they are tanks though because the 6.5 is an IDI diesel it will run off juat about anything, used engine oil penut oil transmission fluid gasoline even, and offroad I've pulled out more stuck subrus and toyotas than I care to remember. All while knocking on the door of 300k miles in 2023.

The 6.2 and especially the 6.5 had very weak crankshafts. You can identify what transmission it was in front of by where the crank broke. Automatic trucks would always break behind the 1/2 journals, (harmonic balancer issues) manual transmission trucks broke in front of the 7/8 journals. The last gen 6.5 for Hummer use corrected these issues with a forged crankshaft and a full main bearing support that bolted to the block with the main bearing caps integrated into it. $10 grand upgrade. A little too pricey for a average Joe and a 20 year old truck.

The Humvee(Military Spec. While the "H1"," Hummer "are "Civilian" spec) , is/was not bad. It was just placed in doing what it was not built for. Such as placing too many armor platings on them and putting them(as a last-ditch effort) in situations/missions which it was not built/intended for(War On Terror in places like Afghanistan and Iraq especially in Urban Combat. Misused. Compared to when it was in the Gulf War).

Would love to have one. But all us trucks are crazy expensive to buy in Europe! A RAM 2500 is about 250% more expensive in Europe compared to the US. The government has also but another limit...any cars this have has to be operated with a higher class licence..that would put you about 5-10 grand out of pocket.

Keep it stock man. It's a V6. If you are into cars, you get the top spec of that specific car. And in your case, get a GT with a V8. And see how you like it in base form before touching it. It's not worth it to invest in a V6.

Once they started fitting the FRAG (armor) kits onto the chassis, the "performance" suffered even more.
