How Terraria Was Made and Why Development Suddenly Stopped

Ойындар

This Terraria documentary details the development of the indie game Terraria and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover more about how Andrew “Redigit” Spinks got the idea for the popular sandbox game and started his own indie studio Re-Logic, to begin development on Terraria. The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Andrew and his team made and how Terraria was inspired by some of Andrew’s favorite games.
It also takes a close look at all the hurdles Re-Logic had to go through during Terraria’s 9-year long development cycle. There were actually multiple moments during its development that could have caused a premature end to Terraria’s decade long journey. Furthermore, it delves into other Re-Logic projects like Terraria 2 and Terraria: Otherworld and what exactly happened to them over the years. Lastly, the documentary explores Terraria’s legacy and how Re-Logic handed the keys to the community after they released the last major update titled “Journey’s End”.

What I love most about the music is that somehow it sounds the same as the way the game looks. Terraria has a retro pixelated look, and yet manages to be beautiful and distinct. You know exactly what each environment and item is. The music is the same, it has that 8-bit digital sound and is still charming, haunting, nostalgic etc. as the situation demands. Both the visuals and the music impose deliberate limitations on themselves, and manage to work within those limitations to create something that works better than it could have done *without* the limitations. Genius.

I am wondering if Finn, since he founded chucklefish, came up with Starbound to somehow work personally on "his" ideal version of Terraria, since it has many of the features Andrew wanted to include in his second Terraria game at the time. I would love to see a video about it since when I played for the first it felt very forgotten (maybe it's my fault since I never get much involved with communities), and it shocked me to see so much content in it. Truly another wonderful game that is both very similar and very different from Terraria.

I'll be honest, Starbound went downhill for the most part. It had its peak back in beta, but most fans including me were disappointed after the release and the updates. The game used to be good, but nowadays, it's just a shell of it's former self. The mods are awesome though, as they're pretty much the only thing that is keeping the community alive. It's pretty sad to see a game that's only good when modded.

But sticking around tells me that they did feel bad about it and wanted to apologize, which means that they're worthy of being forgiven. That doesn't mean turn off your defences though. Nice Video! Seems fairly accurate from my perspective for all of the 2011 stuff, and Good job pronouncing my last name, some people really butcher it. :p Although a small note, I didn't make 'Major Design Decisions'. On the game itself, I only really wrote a few NPC dialogues and made some suggestions for possible items, but mostly my work was behind the scenes (Beta Testing, bug tracking, reading and answering emails, patch-note tracking) and of course the community management stuff. Terraria has grown so much since I left the team and I am glad to raise a glass to it's 10 year anniversary. - Jeremy 'Blue'

Wonder if they ever found out who leaked the early version, shouldn’t be hard in such a small studio.

That's how Among Us got made: someone in the team was a traitor and they spent years of development figuring out whodunnit.

I remember 1.1, it felt like not many knew about Terraria, slowly though, in 1.2 I got a few friends into it and made a few friends that played Terraria, then suddenly 1.3 it felt like everyone knew Terraria, I feel like Terraria's rise was so gradual I just didn't notice it was so big when it was.

Man I can't get enough of these studies. They go beyond just my love for a game, but honestly give me inspiration in my own life hearing about the developers and their motivations. Thank you for yet another excellent rundown, your work on these is EXCELLENT!! 💎🎮

My pleasure, Karine! Thank you for taking the time to watch my videos :D Glad to hear they’re serving as inspiration! No matter how many videos of these I make, I’m always baffled myself how a small group of people can make such a huge impact on the gaming industry!
