How Undertale Was Made and Why its Success Scared The Creator

Ойындар

This Undertale documentary details the development of the indie video game Undertale and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover how developer Toby Fox came up with the idea for the unconventional RPG and how he wanted to challenge conventional RPG mechanics and tropes and fully embrace the video game medium. While Toby developed Undertale mostly on his own, he did receive help from several artists, most notably a friend of his named Temmie Chang.
The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Toby Fox made and how the game was inspired by a Wikipedia article about arrays. It also details how Toby Fox struggled with the success of Undertale and even caused a burnout. Lastly, the documentary also takes a look at Toby's next project Deltarune.

Yes. I completely agree. Without the music Undertale would be a stupid pebble. Also if the music was in a different style it would be crap, too. The characters and the graphics and the music all fit together. If one of them changed, it just wouldn’t work. That’s why I like undertale so much.

The songs are just so iconic, they arent pop music but theyre just catchy, especially the His Theme and the Undertale Theme, Fallen Down and Home (especially the music box ver.) are so nostalgic and good to vibe to on lonely days, listening to these actually helped me stay away from anxiety and depression when im sad and alone. THIS is the part that people dont see. Toby maybe one of the few indie devs that managed to get a hit on his first release, but it wasnt his first experience. Toby was working on art, programming, music, etc way before he released the demo. And even with the demo he still had to work a lot to create Undertale, write stories, scratch designs and musics. Considering the time Toby studied before creating Undertale, we can say that he worked on it for a least 5 years

Not because of the bosses, just because I REALLY love this game/tale. I can't hurt those characters! I won't even try to do that! I love them. REALLY love them. In my opinion people who do Genocide are TRUE MONSTERS. How they like doing this run? And...why? To say that they beated Sans? Are they happy that they killed the entire Underground? These people are just heartless! It is really annoying when they say : "If you didn't defete Sans you're noob","I cryed when I "HAD" to kill Undyne" or when they say "Chara why you did that". They are really annoying!! They think that they're strong because they slay them all, they can't understand that they are just HEARTLESS MONSTERS. And no they didn't *HAD* to kill them! Neither Chara did anything! Chara isn't phycopath,THEY ARE. People that has,had or are doing Genocide or even trying or thinking of doing this route are villains. Anyway I will stay the hero at Pascifist and I will CONTINUE because I truly love this game/tale/expirience.❤😑❤ And one final massege. Don't ERASE them,SAVE them ❤

What people need to learn from Undertale is that it’s not an overnight success. Toby has had a long background from already established fandoms, namely Earthbound and Homestuck, making things like mods and musics, and then he makes something small as a demo and sets up a funding and expanded that demo only after the funding is well-established. Don’t fall into the trap (like my studio’s indie game did) of just making a big thing on your own for years out of your own pocket, with no community or backing and then just releasing it expecting it to blow up. It won’t. Save yourself from this disappointment.

A reminder, it's *2022* and we still love this game, as well as anticipate the upcoming Deltarune installments at the edges of our seats. Back when it was new and people really started obsessing over this game, it became so crazy within the fandom that it scared the rest of the gaming community and left a sour taste for the people who just wanted to play their favorite games without hearing: "Undertale is *the* best video game ever," so as a response, their distaste for the game and its fans grew into hate, and they started saying Undertale is greatly overrated. You could compare it to Fortnite, a game that surged in popularity and had infamy for its... less kind fans. Fortnite is still a well-developed game, but it got a bad rep. However, neither game is "overrated," just some people took their love for it way too far and made it seem that way. It's unequivocally one of the greatest (in its specific genre, of course) games of the century.

i think the thing that differentiates indie games from AAA games is the focus on quality. AAA games are normally well rounded in quality, with every side of them being presentable. but a jack of all trades is a master of nothing. games like undertale aren't afraid to leave their weak points open as long in order to focus extremely hard on others. undertale may not have the most complicated and beautiful visuals, but it more than makes up for that with its incredibly strong music, writing and story

The often forgotten thing about Undertale people often seem to forget, is that every route perfectly manages to make you feel like you should feel: -Genocide is supposed to be boring/unsatisfying (you need to grind out every single area until no one's left to even try to get this ending and you don't even get the satisfaction of killing Asgore at the end yourself) and make you feel bad for killing everyone (even Flowey, who isn't even able to feel emotions, is scared of you when he realises even he isn't above his own rule of kill or be killed after all and Asgore asking what kind of monster you are). -Neutral is best described as the fun or the most open route since you have full control in who lives or dies. And I'm just going to be honest here: I legit cried during Azzy and Chara's backstory. -And finally, Pacifist is the happy route where everyone gets to live happily and you actually make a lot of friends while having a lot of fun and/or helping them to overcome their problems (from Sans' jokes and the dates with Papyrus and Undyne to convincing Toriel you're strong enough to keep yourself safe and helping Alphys to learn her how to accept herself and help her get over her anxiety issues to finally sharing one final heartfelt moment with Asriel before he turns back into Flowey again, but not before he breaks the barrier once and for all, which means Chara and Asriel's plan was succesfull even when it actually meant they both had to die in order to make their plan succeed).

And I guess finally learning how Flowey learned to reset was nice too since that actually answered questions Neutral and Pacifist never did.

It took me a year of it being released to actually try playing it for myself, and another year after that to completely finish it. All I can say is, nothing is going to amount to how I felt first playing it. I think the thing I did the most when I first played, and to this day, was just laying in bed at Toriel's house while the Home music played, just enjoying a moment of peace before a Genocide run, or a long journey to the end of the game in a Pacifist run. Not only does the game make you think, it makes you sit and realize that "despite everything, it's still you".

as someone who just played undertale this year and is experiencing bad grief for the characters (undertale affected me pretty deeply,) deltarune is definitely living up to its predecessor. just finished chapter 2 a month ago and the way my heart was pounding at the end of the second chapter was kinda crazy to me. i love ralsei, noel, lancer, and especially susie. i relate to susie so much. idk where the story is going but i dont trust kris and im genuinely scared for the other characters. the way that toby can make you care about his characters so much is really something 😅

I’ve gotta admire Toby and Temmie. It ain’t easy just being α composer/former EarthBound modder and α freelance animator working on α neat little passion project, only for it to somehow become α quintessential piece of an entire generation’s pop culture. Really gotta respect how they’ve been handling all that pressure.

All the small details make the game unlike other ones. From small humorous moments to actually making characters that feel like they have a 'soul' and individuality, the game offers so many things at once when you're not expecting too much from a game that is only a few hundred megabytes. Unarguably, the story, the soundtrack and the undeniable creativity really elevate the game and your impression of it to its peak. The game is definitely short but it feels long enough because you get to savor and enjoy every moment of playing it. All said still you can tell or rather feel that it's a work of someone who really cared about their work. Props for the informative and very enjoyable video and props to Toby and everyone who worked on the game.

Any time I think about why indie games can just have so much passion behind them and why they can be so much better than, imo, the big budget games is this one sentence right here. Couldn't have said it any better. Not focusing on how your game is gonna make money and focusing on making your a game that you love and put all your heart in is something more big budget games can learn from.

As Undertale's biggest fan, I explored this game from the inside out, including the trailers, and dozens of little things Toby has made regarding Undertale. and I must say, Undertale is one of the most creative games IF NOT the MOST creative game ever made, that includes it's developer, every once in a while you'll see that every single thing made for the game has dozens of unique touches in it which make it very different from every other other, may it be the game itself, trailers, steam cards, steam banner, dialogue, specific fourth wall breaks, weird borders in the games, etc, etc, etc and even little secrets in Deltarune which only the most dedicated fans like me would be able to notice it's purpose to be added, that includes dialogue, graphical designs, jokes, areas, parts of the soundtrack, secrets, etc. Undertale content (*ANY* official undertale content) is filled to the top with inside jokes, references and things which make Undertale *almost* feel like an alternate world represented in a game because of how much the worldbuilding is increased due to all of these combined, which is funny lol. You would be surprised if you knew just how many of these touches are there right now... Call me whatever you want, you won't be able to deny the fact all I said is true, except for it being the most creative game ever made which would go on personal opinion

I love this game so much, that I feel so much nostalgia the moment I hear just some notes of any track from the soundtrack. Sometimes I can't watch KZread videos where it's used as background music, because I instantly think about Undertale and totally forget to focus on the video.

This was a lovely video to watch for me as someone who’s never played the game, or been around for it’s initial hype, that really helped me know and understand it. In my eyes, as someone who has only been aware of extremely casual gaming, and only of what others have presented to me like on the family wii, after I got into let’s plays everyone raved about undertale playthroughs so apart from being a little old by that point I never understood why apart from assuming it was all about the characters for them, like just another “popular things to relate to and heavily attach yourself to emotionally” I guess

Anyone can try to make a game like Undertale, but I just don't see a possibility of this happening. Everything is so unique. The music, history, characters, alternatives, and how the game makes you role play is just art. I can feel the feelings through everything while I play it

You can really tell that this game has so much love behind it. From the character design, to the music, there is so much love behind this game. They didn’t have much to make the game, but they made it work. I just started getting back into this game. I was obsessed with it a couple years ago, and then just sorta forgot abt it. I’m so happy that I started getting into it again. I would like to play it some day and I look forward that day.

i've been a huge fan of undertale ever since the game came out, drawing fanart of it in 2016 & still going. this game has literally saved me & i can't thank toby (+ temmie) enough for creating such a masterpiece. parts of the fandom is scary but there is a big part of it that isn't toxic undertale is the longest special interest that i'm still into & i'm so happy that it is. the characters are like family to me & the music is SO good still after almost six years. w/ undertale, this game gave me determination thru life - something i thought i could never get
