This Enter The Gungeon documentary details the development of indie 2D bullet hell roguelike Enter The Gungeon and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover more about development studio Dodge Roll and its small team of creators. Brent Sodman, David Rubel and Dave Crooks were all working at Mythic Entertainment, until EA sold the whole company. Instead of going to another EA studio, the developers decided to start their own video game company and began working on Enter The Gungeon. The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Dodge Roll made and shows how the basic premise and gameplay was born in a single afternoon.
It also takes a close look at all the hurdles the team had to go through. The team only had a few weeks to create a first prototype and pitch it to publishers at E3. Additionally, the members of Dodge Roll took a huge risk and poured all their life savings into the game and decided against using Kickstarter. Furthermore, the developers had trouble implementing the right bullet hell mechanics and ended up creating their own version of BulletML, which is an open source bullet scripting system. Lastly, Dave Crooks shares some advice for aspiring indie developers and talks about what’s next for Dodge Roll.

Video game production, as a whole, eats and chew up people. It's one of the most complex product that can be made, requiring all of its many complex components to be equally high-quality: art, programming, marketing, music, player education (tutorial and ramping player challenge), etc. etc.

its often the story behind a lot of the best games ever made. Often times you will hear it was an accident, something that was under funded, barely made it to market, and didn't have the backing you would expect of an amazingly successful game. The original WarCraft and Blizzard studio's was like that, they even went through several different names and change in leadership, almost going broke in each exchange. I think its the interest in making something great and not having expectations to be held to, is often risky but also makes for the best games possible.

Agree, and Exit the Gungeon is a great game too🔫
This story was a blast to hear about! As someone who's played Gungeon since release day over 6 years ago, with 420 hours combined across PS4 and PC, I adore it. From the mechanics to the music (did I mention the theme song kicks ass?), the gunplay to the Gungeoneers, everything just goes so well together and it really shows. While tough for new players at first, once you get used to dodge rolling and weapons (and their rarities), you'll be blasting Bullet Kin like a pro (pun intended). Beating pasts is no easy feat (The Pilot's past was the hardest for me), and unlocking the secret characters (Bullet, Robot, Gunslinger and Paradox) takes time, but once you do it, the feeling of accomplishment washes over you and it's so good. It took me 3 years to get the Platinum trophy but damn it was worth it. I even have a t-shirt of the Advanced Gungeons and Dragon art, it's incredible. The community is amazing too, from the fanart to the animations. Thank you Dodge Roll Games for making one (bullet) hell of an experience for myself and others to dodge roll into. If you haven't bought this game, from the bottom of my heart, GET IT. Couch co-op with a buddy is great too. It's a perfect game in my eyes. Thank you so much for sharing the team's story with a wider audience, it means so much to everyone.
Enter the Gungeon is one of my favorites roguelikes of all time. Like dead cells, the game just feels good to play and keep playing again and again even after unlocking everything. The gun puns are also new and very well done.
A game made from love, sweat, tears, hard work, and a legendary level of dedication. Respect.
Easily my favorite roguelike game. The passion and creativity just oozes from ETG. I've put over 300 hours into it, and it is still exciting to play.
Glen, you just absolutely continue to nail it with the quality of these. My goodness, very very well done!!
I'm not surprised at all that it went so well for them. When you have such a clear and concise idea from the start work is so much easier. No matter what kind of project you're working on. And they definitely aced the difficult but fair, there is honestly only 1 or two rooms I can think of in the hundreds of hours of play, and probably close to a thousand of watching in the entire game that aren't completely fair, and doable with nothing but the starter gun with enough time and effort. They're such a prominent face in the indie sphere because they earned it with quality, hardwork, and great ideas. I truly hope whatever they come out with next they stick to their guns (no pun intended) and release something with just as much care and thoughtfulness put into it. No matter how long it takes :3 thank you for the video, it was a good watch
Bro finally! I’ve been waiting to learn about these developers forever, since I love ETG and I love the journeys of Indie Developers such as Team Cherry and Studio MDHR. Plus, the game is full of so much passion and epic references!
I really do hope this studio continues to be a prominent figure in the Indie scene - as a casual Gungeoneer who finally managed to snag the High Dragunfire a couple weeks ago, they’ve earned it in my books.

I remember watching NL & Cobalt playing the game when it came out as well, when they finally managed to beat the game and get the gun that could kill the past.. I remember none of them had any idea what the gun looked like yet but earlier that run somebody made a joke saying 'what if it was just a gun with the barrel pointed backwards' and it was!! It was honestly what I think cemented this game as my top favorite game of all time.

I'm a HUGE fan of Gungeon, I had no idea the development was so troubled and daring. Makes me like the game even more!
The thing I love about EtG is that there’s almost a 100% chance you’ll fail your first time, but as you slowly move through it every other time you get to learn, which is true for a lot of games, but this one had a different feel to it when this happened
Beat roguelike/roguelite for me, Good video glad to see the growth of this channel as someone who’s been watching since the beginning

SO STOKED to see you did a vid on this game and studio! Enter the Gungeon deserves every bit of praise it gets. While I'm not clamoring for a 2nd one to be made. it would be so dope to get another DLC. We can dream can't we?
Enter the gungeon is probably my most played game of all time. I just recently unlocked the finished gun and I still look forward to playing it. I wish they would make a sequel.
honestly, even if they wouldn't have had a semi polished demo, I imagine Devolver still would have been intrigued. Just being pitched the idea, how could you pass on something so batshit insane? I remember hearing about Gungeon in college, buying it on a whim because I was starting to get into indies, and then sinking hundreds of hours into the game over the years and multiple platforms. Love this little game that could, and still play it to this day.
I played enter the gungeon once a few years ago on gamepass with my brother and my friend, and it was an absolute blast.
Everytime I hear the opening music to enter the gungeon, I get chills. This game goes so much harder/deeper than it has any right to. The details are so finely crafted, to the point this game is on the level of much more serious games emotionally. I'd go so far as to say it's on par with MGS on the emotional level, and on any other level (gameplay, graphics, music) it meets or exceeds that very high bar. A masterpiece on every level, I love this game.
I didn't make a comment initially from my first watch, but after having watched about a dozen videos and this channel being my main video entertainment source for the past week, I must say: the content you make is very, very good. And I hope you continue to experience the success that you've had with this video. I always find the titles interesting, even if they can be called clickbait-y, and the sponsors never bother me that much either. So keep doing what you do!!! It can be difficult making a cross-genre core audience, but the content is always so interesting that it *will* work. (Also, as a side note, though I always watch the videos themselves, I suspect a podcast format could be rather doable and reasonably successful? I'm sure that idea has been introduced many times to you, but nonetheless, I must say I would enjoy them.)
Love this game. Really sad it doesn't get updated anymore.

It's crazy to think about that Devolver took a chance like they did on Dodge Roll. Out of money but sitting on an amazing premise with the will to make it happen, and then your publisher goes "Hey, here's the money you need to finish" Devolver knew they had a hot round in the chamber.

@@ThatGuyGlen No, thank you for hearing me out! I hope there's enough there to make a good video, I'd be over the moon if I directly influenced one of my favorite KZreadrs to make a video!
6:25 Ooohh this is giving me some big nostalgia and a desire to play games again
This game is amazing! I put countless hours on it and absolutely enjoyed every run! Thank you for the video!

My pleasure!
I remember first hearing about it on good game spawn point on ABC3 early on in its development. Now it's one of my favourite games
I used to do runs of that game... I loved it... Platted it 2 weeks after getting it... It's so awesome and badass, it's actually on of those timeless games. Always fun.
I recently got this game it is very addictive I really like how you move with left stick and aim with the other it’s very satisfying
Amazing video, loved to hear their story.

One of my most played and favorite games of all time. Bless them.
If they ever end up releasing a more polished version of the game, it should be called "Enter the Gungeon: RELOADED"
The games this video mentioned is essentially a list of games I might like to play
Really awesome video thanks man
