How sudden cardiac arrest changed my life | Grace McCubbin | TEDxDavenport
In a chilling moment during a nationally televised NFL game in January of 2023, the world held
its breath as Damar Hamlin, a renowned football player, nearly died on the playing field. It was
an introduction for millions of Americans to the insidious silent killer known as sudden cardiac
arrest. Just one month later, Grace’s 16-year-old son collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest in his school classroom. Witness an awe-inspiring TEDx Talk as Grace takes the stage, sharing her powerful journey from near tragedy to leading an impassioned crusade to spread awareness in her community and beyond.
Grace McCubbin is a wife, a mother, and a fierce advocate for sudden cardiac arrest awareness and education. The mother of a sudden cardiac arrest survivor, Grace advocates for several organizations dedicated to the cause and regularly participates in education events and training exercises. As CEO of a consulting start-up in the QC area, she uses her position and visibility within the community to bring awareness and action to this critical agenda. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I am not a US citizen. Geniunly shocked that you can go through school without having a class of CPR training. My school did that every year. The Heimlich maneuver were also something we went through. No way near as much as CPR but it is unimaginable that you don't have it mandatory yet.
Oh wow, seeing everyone comment too quickly without watching the full video baffles me. No wonder people now a days put others down using the internet. But hey it's just how it is.
Wow! We jump on and body shame an incredible human who almost lost her son? Totally missing the point that a device saved his life that thankfully was available in his school! This woman is caring, successful, driven, and beautiful. I’m sorry that some people must be so sad in their lives to troll you instead of pick up on your message. There are still plenty of people hearing you!

an AED will also be able to tell you if they even have a shockable rhythm. Not all heart rhythms can be shocked back. Everyone should definitely know CPR though, because if nothing else, chest compressions can and will save lives. It helps keep blood flowing and extends the time that the brain can survive without serious damage.

Who made this thumbnail? Its obviously painting the wrong picture here.
To everyone commenting, let’s just clear this up: This is not a video about Grace and HER health, its not about vaccines, obesity, or politics: it’s about a mother loving and protecting her young son (who is NOT overweight or obese) and trying to help bring awareness so parents are never put in the same situation she was. I get it, it’s easy to hide your insecurities behind a computer and make yourself better by putting people down. But maybe, just maybe…you can look beyond a persons physical appearance and instead, listen, learn and have empathy for a very important issue and pray to god it never happens to you or your family.

I dont believe in karma... but sometimes a persons past words/actions make new tragedies in their lives either much less a tragedy than they'd be otherwise, or sometimes just deeply ironic.
It's one thing to have a defibrillator and another thing to know how to use it and the CPR training once a year certainly wouldn't make me a reliable quick acting expert in a dire emergency.. I'd be like scratching my head and going how many times do I have to pump the chest?

Sudden cardiac arrest is due to an electrical cardiac malfunction. Not excess weight. Congenital factors, trauma, certain diseases, external electrical sources, electrolyte imbalances, etc are involved, sometimes in an otherwise healthy heart. More common in younger folks. One google search away and you'll know that obesity and sudden cardiac arrest are highly correlated, even in young people (obesity along with other factors). Of course we should educate people on basic medical help, like CPR, but the best way to stop these kinds tragedies from happening is prevention, not installing AEDs in every facility.

This is why nurses don't get to call the shots. They aren't even trained on a traditional medical model like PAs/MDs. In my 15 years auditing providers, NP/DNPs are flat out dangerous. They know just enough to be woefully unaware of how reckless they are being. No cardiac arrest happens outside of electrical issues??? Absurd. I don't know if your data is simply obsolete from how long it's been since you were educated, but this is terrible medical advice (which is why RNs don't get to legally give it).

The difference is, cardiac arrest is far more common. Advocating for AEDs is not like asking everyone to wear body armour. It's asking for public facilities to have an accessible medical device on site. One medical device per facility, not per person. Very reasonable. We need BOTH short and long term solutions. Prevention isnt going to help someone who is actively having a heart attack. I know this family personally. Her son is very healthy, fit, and not at all overweight. It was completely unexpected. It can hapen to anyone. When it's someone you love who's life is on the line it really hits different. Saying AEDs are not important because the root cause needs to be treated instead has the same lack of logic as saying hospitals shouldn't exist because we should just prevent all illness and injuries in the first place.
