How to build the reputation you want | Beth Polish | TEDxOldHickory

“All we have is our reputation.” We say that all the time. But do we really know our own reputation? Is it the same with everyone we interact with? Colleagues? Friends? Family? Should it be? And in an AI-and technology-saturated world, can we have any control over it, let alone own it? The answer is we have to, especially because the world is shaped by the magnifying power of zeros and ones. And we can. We can absolutely embrace and own our reputation, nurture it, have agency over it. In this TEDxOldHickory talk, Beth Polish discusses why it’s vital for us, individually, and for society, that we don’t cede control over it to anyone or anything else.
Beth Polish is a widely experienced entrepreneur and executive with unique expertise in digital technology and media. She was founding COO/CFO of iVillage and co-founded Dreamlife with Tony Robbins, backed by Allen & Co., building it into a public company valued at close to $1 billion. She has been CFO of Goldman Sachs Ventures and Managing Director at KPMG, and she created and led Hearst Corporate Innovation, fostering a culture of innovation across a $10+ billion company. As a certified executive leadership coach Beth works with senior C-suite executives at critical junctures in the company or their careers. She has 3 Grammy nominations as a producer and is a speaker nationally and internationally. Her board memberships include UGA’s Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She has an AB in anthropology from Franklin & Marshall College and an MBA from Harvard. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I learned so much listening to Beth about the impact of technology on reputation. We tend to believe that the more connections and likes we have on social media, the more successful we can be. Beth shows us why this more-is-better approach can be a reputational risk. In doing so, she shows us how we can take back our humanness. Sally Helgesen

Well said, Beth Polish! We have the power to shape our reputation and stand in our own truth with integrity and compassion - in addition to recognizing others for their valued contributions!

We assume that our reputation matches our self-image, but it rarely does. Or, at least, not without a lot of introspection, hard work, and guidance from wise people like Beth Polish! Thank your for sharing some of your insights, Beth!

Beth does a great job breaking down all of the things that go into our reputation, and what we can do to make sure that people think of us the way we want them to think of us. Leaves me thinking about how to be human in a data-focused world.

what was this talk 😭😭😭🤡 i had such high hopes going in, the first couple sentences seemed promising,,,, then every single sentence was an entirely new idea with no connection to the previous sentence. and even those ideas were just personal opinions with no data or reliable examples. what did any of this mean or intend to convey??? speaking of- what is so wrong with connecting with mutuals 💀 why will it “ruin my reputation” if i connect with a colleague of my ex-colleague who is in the same industry as me? or the friend of a friend whom i’ve heard about? literally how is that impacting my reputation iN tHe GraNd ScHemE oF tHiNgS and destroying the 1s and 0s of the digital algo- WHY WOULD THE ALGO EVEN CARE MISS MA’AM WHAT DO YOU MEAN 😩 what a load of bull, does tedx upload any talk ever now
