When I was younger I felt the immense tension and sadness around Dwayne’s character. His yearning for a family, yet his fear of it itself. His only friend being Niko. Playboy X betraying him. I’m glad you can spare him and hang out with him. He’s a broken man who if he doesn’t have anybody, he doesn’t have anything. GTA needs this type of writing again. Harsh, emotional storytelling.

I really enjoy GTA’s writing when it’s crazy, wacky, almost at times cartoonish antics and characters like in Vice City or San Andreas- or when it’s serious, dark, and emotional like in 4 and The Lost and Damned. I enjoyed GTA V’s story, but it felt like at times it was trying to be a mix of the two, and I wasn’t a fan. I think The Ballad of Gay Tony did the ‘wacky story’ thing really well.

@FalloutGNR that is an excellent point! It kind of makes sense that he resorts to conversations to either connect with others or defuse situations. Really think about it; you live in a ruined Eastern European country ruined by war and poverty, being used to fighting in a war that had young men barely out of high school commit horrendous act of violence to their enemies. You were betrayed by one of your closest friends for really nothing, and witness all of your other friends killed in cold blood. When dealing with a place like Liberty City, Niko decides that’s it’s best to resolve problems with conversation, because he does not have to prove how dangerous he is. Niko Bellic is capable of violence that no gangster there could comprehend, and does what he can to get by with his cousin Roman. This game is so complex and amazing honestly

Very true, to me Dwayne is the most relatable character in the game. His depression and guilt from seeing his friends turn into addicts and his childhood, but still trying to make a decent life after getting out prison. He paid for his crimes with jail time, in theory he should be happy to be free, but is still wondering if the bullet is the only good way out. He is honest and tells how much he is suffering, to the point it is almost bothersome. I love how Niko makes him realize he ain't the only one suffering, by telling him about seeing his friends in a mass grave, which just makes him reply "Oh fuck" and go all quiet. This Niko never tells anyone else, I think it is because it is only Dwayne and him who has a similar suffering therefore he probably feels safe to open up about it. Roman he also tells stuff, but Roman don't seem to understand it the same way, since Roman seems to try to make Niko ignore it and focus more on living the American dream. And that is not wrong either, Roman just wants Niko to be happy and not dwell on the past like Dwayne. It all feels so very real and human.

I think gta iv's story was alot more dark, drab, realistic, and emotionally heavy because of the era of time in which it was released. Literally during a horrible recession, as technology started becoming a bigger part of everyone's lives making everything more impersonal, during a growing opiate epidemic, during the heaviest phase of conflicts in iraq and afghanistan, while russia fought a border war in georgia. The world was very bleak at the time, but we were too young to realize it. In retrospect gta iv is a perfect depiction of that era of time as it unfolded where as gta vc and sa take place in a bygone era in retrospect and instead are filled with tropes instead of commentary on the world in which we were living. Such a beautiful work of art this game is.

He didn't hang out with Dwayne out of sympathy. He could genuinely relate to him, as they came from similar backgrounds of poverty and violence. They both took on lives of crime to survive, and lost some family and friends to death and betrayal as well. Niko would often remind Dwayne while hanging out together that he's not the only one who has had a hard life. Niko kept it real with Dwayne and vise versa.

I love how during the scene when Dwayne comes back, you can see Niko and Dwayne instantly had this silent connection during his conversation with Playboy, then at the end Dwayne looks at Niko to talk to him, as if Niko was instantly his righthand man, you can tell how it was a scene of "real recognized real" and they both had a bonding moment in talking about how Playboy is. I love how Niko has Dwaynes back before you even hangout and become full friends, when Playboy calls Niko calls him out on abandoning Dwayne, but Playboy being to full of himself only sees it as Niko validating his own problems towards Dwayne, just so full of himself till the end.

Playboy, he think he's in some kind of a fantasy world where he's the good guy when in reality is just a charlatous all-bark-no-bite hoodlum from the streets, and only because he got very lucky he inherited Dwayne's coke empire that Dwayne and he (for a short time), built.

GTA IV is simply the best Grand Theft Auto ever written in terms of story. No other game in the franchise will surpass this one. These characters may be fictional, but the impact they leave when it comes to real-life decisions is REAL, specially when it comes to the infamous Holland Play choice. When I chose to kill Dwayne in the first time around, I felt like a ton of bricks fell on me. The money the mission awarded to you wasn't even worth it(not mentioning Playboy's scumbaggery afterwards). A human life, as for any living being's life, is priceless. However, when I backed up the savefile to take Playboy's life instead, it felt like a huge weight got off of my mind, like I could've taken on the world, just for getting rid of such an evil and disloyal character.

I feel I have to confess… I first played this game when I was around 11/12, and I remember I killed Dwayne. I’m not sure whether it was just me skipping the cutscenes and not really understanding the story like I do now, but I have faint memories about killing him because he was so unhappy and it would be the better option. I probably bought into all playboys manipulation too. I remember just as you start shooting at Dwayne, he says “Niko, but I thought we were friends man!?” Or something to that effect. It was literally the only point in the GTA 4 story that I felt horrible about what I had just done.

I actually feel bad for Dwayne he’s such a deep and traumatic character, he got betrayed by his friend, his ex girlfriend and the man who ratted him out. he had a hard life, and he felt like he had nothing left, the only option he felt that he had was suicide he even admits it to Niko. “Sometimes I wanna end this shit” “Just bam” he was in a dark place, I think Prison definitely had an affect on his mental health, he just felt alone and miserable and that he had nothing left. And that’s why killing Playboy is the better option because he truly didn’t care about Dwayne, he didn’t have his back whenever the gangsters took over his club or when Jayvon ratted him out, he was jealous of Dwayne, Playboy is so narcissistic and delusional that he claims that he wanted to change and make the world a better place but no Playboy was full of shit he never changed he never cared about Dwayne or making the world a better place. Especially when he stopped visiting Dwayne while he was in prison in 2004, he didn’t see Dwayne for 4 years and as soon as Dwayne got released. The shit hit the fan when Playboy found out that Dwayne got out of prison. Playboy was so hypocritical and delusional he lived in a fantasy. He was jealous of Dwayne. And when Playboy took over his empire, he wasn’t there to save it he was there to only destroy it. Playboy was a snake. He didn’t care about Dwayne or Niko or anybody. He only cared about himself. Like what Niko said to him before he died. “You didn’t change the game” “The game changed you”.

The way Playboy X died was kinda telling, considering he used to be a nobody, and now, he's gonna die like one. In an rundown alley, betrayed by his own handgun, and with no one else there except the harbinger of his ultimate downfall. Big Smoke got it way easier. In El Grando Smokio's case, he died in his Crack Fortress, and he just confronted CJ when the dude finally arrived in his "throne room". He still had respect for CJ as a fellow Grove Street Families member, cuz if he no longer did, he'd have run away from that place. Well, just a bit of respect left, cuz he got to the top and figured nothing matters anymore as he's "invincible."

Thinking about this, Dwayne kind of reminds me a bit of Vic Vance from Vice city stories. - Both of them were people who had to do bad things but did it for moral reasons, be it to survive or to support themselves or others. - They had noble goals in how to succeed in their lives. Vic wanting to be a soldier and Dwayne wanting to be a cop. - Both had to get involved with drugs yet don't actually like it. - Both had someone that were brothers to them. Vic with Lance and Dwayne with Playboy. And both brothers proved to be a hindrance to them. - Both was betrayed by people that they thought they could trust. I think it's also something to consider that Dwayne is similar to age to Vic as well. In a way i can see Dwayne as like a bad end for Vic. If he never died but never got out of the drug game. Lets be real: Lance would of betrayed Vic if he saw the opportunity. In many ways i can see both Dwayne and Playboy being the modern representation of the two. P.S: also just realized this but a gta game that showed how Dwayne got big before he fell would be good, as it would him doing the drug game in the 90s.

This video is very interesting. About Playboy, I think that lying and manipulations are a part of his character. He probably learned to lie and connive because of his poor background and becoming a criminal at a very young age. Also, Playboy's act of associating with the Turnchez brothers may seem like it was wrong, but maybe Playboy had his own reason for not taking the club. He couldn't afford a fight with the Spanish Lords, who were probably the largest street gang in Liberty City. Besides, unlike Dwayne, he had no known influence in Bohan. About Jayvon, what are the odds he knew that Dwayne got ratted out by him? I doubt the LCPD told him that, and I doubt Dwayne did, because if he did, Dwayne's old gang would surely take revenge. About Playboy saying that he wants to help kids but he sells drugs, well you're right. Playboy is just a greedy hypocrite. He wanted a business empire but just cared about selling drugs since he had nothing else but with other people working for him, he should have tried branching out his business interests, and also tried to do so on his own. This goes back to what you've said about his weak will. Playboy's issue is that he greatly prioritized his own success, and because he became full of himself he discarded Dwayne. Also regarding Dwayne and Playboy's friendship that led to Playboy's takeover, I think that since Dwayne considered him family, he named him his successor should he get arrested or killed, hence why no gang members ever betrayed him.

I like your points. Only problem I have with the club situation is that even if Playboy couldn't afford a fight with the Spanish gang, that he doesn't mean that he had to do business with them. Dwayne had to be pretty influential at the time, so it would make sense for him to have a fairly strong gang at the time that he went away. Playboy would've been obligated to take back Dwayne's club, but he chose to cast aside any loyalty he had to Dwayne for the money.

I almost believed that Hotel Theresa of Harlem, Manhattan was “the Carter” hotel from New Jack City. Considering that it’s set in the late 80s/early 90s and Harlem was hit by the crack epidemic. In Liberty City, Dwayne was selling crack real seriously. Like he had friends who became crackheads and boy did he gave them crack and truly he didn’t shown consciousness for his actions. Until he imprisoned. Prison broke this crack dealing bastard. Also the climax of GTA San Andreas where CJ goes into Big Smokes Crack Palace was somewhat based on New Jack City’s the Carter place.
