The fact there's a police station literally across the street from the park Derrick hangs out at proves that he probably got arrested for possession of illegal substance (heroine) by some cop who happen to see him freaking out while high. Out of all the parks Derrick could of went to feed his addiction, he decides to go to the one with the most police activity. Why!? Great in-depth character analysis Pat! Because I imagine Gerry could get end his political career with a phone call. Francis doesn't want go to jail and would do anything. Thinking about these guys like real criminals they would cut some sort of arrangement behind the scenes. It would look bad if Gerry was dropping dirt or some big bad guy in federal. However if his brother qualifies for early release and goes "legit" which means running a front I could imagine both would cut a nice long term deal slice of the pie type situation knowing liberty city.

I don't think Rockstar do that to hint something, I mean look, there is LOST fuckin MC clubhouse just around the corner from the police station, their base of operations, they doing drugs there, deliver drugs and guns there, fighting and who knows what else, Billy (head of the chapter) even kill person right there in a cutscene, and it's all happen just behind the police station, i think it's just bad mapping or whatever you called it from Rockstar and nothing else, they probably doesn't exactly know where Derrick gonna give missions when they did the map so it's just a stupid coincidence, even if it's symbolic in some way.

Ironic that people think that Ray's a rat when HE's the one that got betrayed repeatedly. 1. Luca and the garbage crew stole the diamonds from Ray. 2. Johnny stole the money from the diamond deal even though Ray was gonna split it 50/50. 3. Jimmy Pegorino and Niko betrayed Ray by having him killed.

Speaking of Derrick's addiction, his heroin usage makes him all the more self-destructive, which could kill him by overdose, given that he's mentioned to be dead by GTA V.

It could be more messed up if you choose Revenge at the end of GTA 4 and Kate dies, and also choose to kill Francis, Derrick dies between 2008 and 2013, and also choosing to kill Packie instead of saving him in GTA 5, the McReary family is basically wiped out in just 5 years time, with Gerry only left probably.

@@user-sg2mu9ye7h Elizabeta was probably transferred to a federal prison for women, while Gerry wasn't put in the mission because Rockstar done it that way in case players would do Gerry's first missions (before his arrest) after the events of TLAD have wrapped up.

The voice acting in this game was top notch HBO level quality. I really hope GTA6 brings back the quality. The story of GTAV has great lines but this game is more realistic.

Americans only learn about the history that we were victorious in. When Eastern Europe was shattered, Americans just didn't get information about it, so the Bosnian war story was incredible to me.

As a recovering heroine addict myself, I would say I'm 97.9% sure it was Derrick. Drugs make you selfish, so it's not hard to believe he got busted for possession. Then he rats on Gerry to get out of it and also because he's scared of withdrawl, which is terrible and I get why he would be affraid of it. With a rap sheet like his, he would likely get the maximum for any crime he is caught for as well.

I agree but I don't think he snitched to avoid withdrawal symptoms in prison. Prisons typically have more drugs readily available than on the street. There may not be AS many drugs floating around, but it's definitely way easier to find.

This was my biggest indicator that it’s Derrick. Drugs can completely change you Derrick strikes me as someone who would typically be real loyal to the family but being addicted to drugs can make you real selfish. Going even through a little withdrawal would drive you to do ANYTHING for your next fix. It’s why there’s that joke of drug addicts doing anything for $20 for their next fix; drug addiction will f you up

Also to mention, Jimmy Pegorino’s Bodyguard was an informant, and could’ve contributed low level stuff and information through Ray and caught to Gerry as low lying fruit

Ray's contact with Gerry wouldn't be in earshot of Pegorino. Pegorino would order Ray to do it and Ray would outsource to Gerry. Plus, cops want the bosses.

Yep, honestly, I think the chaos was because of the recruiting process, Anthony, and mess. Picking up random people is likely to allow informants and cops to get in easily. Anthony was already to testify and was wearing a wire. Not to mention he already could have told them some things along with that heart attack and then death. Pegorino also never operated carefully. Meanwhile, you have seen many people do so. Phil is a big example. Honestly, Phil should have been part of the McReathy family. He would have been better off.

I can see why you believe Derrick talked, with his heavy heroin addiction and his past history of snitching after being busted for explosives as a police informant, It's clear now. Derrick is just as bad as Francis, even if Francis is a corrupt cop, Derrick wouldn't care less if he took down everyone with him. Heroin can damage the mind, and Derrick could've been easily manipulated into talking about Gerry to get off easily.

In my opinion Derrick used the troubles in Northern Ireland as a way to cause trouble and fight for a cause he sort of agreed with. Although he’s ethnically Irish would someone like Derrick really care about a conflict which he was so far away from. I don’t think so. He also probably used the troubles as a way of gaining experience in combat and in using explosives and other equipment etc so that he could come back home and use it to help in his families gang.

Even though the game tried to paint Francis as the aggressor and Derrick as the underdog, Derrick having us kill Aiden just felt so off to me. Sure Aiden talked mad shit about Derrick in jail, but the fact that he was an old man who was so excited to be free, just to be thrown off a cliff and we had no option to spare him. And then we find out by Francis (and by police scanner) that Derrick lied to us, and he DID in fact rat Aiden out, it pissed me off. As much as I tried to justify killing Francis, the crook who pretended to be cop, Francis never actually lied to us to get us to do his dirty work, and he never actually backstabbed anyone. And yet Derrick sold out his best friend and wanted to ruin his brother's career, and CASUALLY asked Niko to kill Francis like it was absolutely nothing to him. Unlike Francis, he didn't even ponder on it for a bit. I had to kill Derrick.

My theory is that Francis figured out that Derrick snitched on Gerald. That's the biggest reason why Francis wants to silence Derrick, to prevent any more dirty laundry from being aired. Simple scenario: an officer belonging to a sect that doesn't want Francis to be commissioner talks to Derrick strung out on the H. Derrick rambles about a racket that Gerald is part of, and the officer also suspects Gerald leading the bank heist due to his connection with the dead Michael. The informant Derrick gets left alone since Gerald is a more appealing catch; fortunately Gerald doesn't rat on any of his brothers, especially Patrick.

Its alot more than that I believe. Many say killing Francis is better but if you do Derrick missions and also listen to the dialogue of Francis, Patrick and Gerald you can hear Derrick is a know snitch. Francis may be a corrupt cop and all but he is more upfront with Niko on that territory and not all the people he kill is people that blackmail him. Some are genuine criminals and that lawyer is also a criminal despite his status. Francis has no problems with his family except for Derrick. He even said to Niko he has no problem with him working for Packie or Gerald, it is Derrick Niko should stay away from. Plus, Francis didn't want Derrick dead from the beginning. Its only until Derrick threatened and blackmailed Francis that he took the step to let him killed. Yeah its kinda awful killing your own brother but why did Derrick mess with Francis in the first place and why did he try to blackmail his own brother? That's why I agree Derrick should be the one that you kill and not Francis cause Francis despite being shady, wouldn't do anything to his own family. If Francis wanted Packie and Gerald gone or dead he would have done it but he did not. Plus Derrick is alot worse cause his missions involve killing those he snitched, that is already red flags to me. Also Francis even told Niko that he will protect him from his cop buddies or any law enforcement that will arrest him. Despite being blackmailed on that part, he himself said he owes Niko on that part so its not really blackmail. Its more of a thank you or reward in that sense.

You and Larry Lawton should join the writing team for the next GTA games

This is something I've never really put too much thought into. I always assumed Gerry was just being sloppy and careless with his criminal activity and drew attention to himself. I think you are 100% correct with this video, Derrick is definitely the snitch. I've sadly known people similar to Derrick in real life. Even if they love you to death ultimately they will give anyone and everything up for their next hit. I think that's exactly what Derrick did. You can't trust drug addicts at all. I choose to save Francis when I play through the game. Even though Francis is a corrupt scumbag cop, I do believe he is grounded enough to potentially redeem himself one day. Derrick is too far gone, and brings nothing but pain and suffering to everyone around him.

Well if you think about it they’re really the same type of person. Since Francis is willing to kill his own brother to get ahead, and Derrick is willing to send his brother to jail and everyone else he was ever close to stay out of jail and be a junky. Francis at least sent Niko to kill a traitorous crime lord(Clarence) and Tom Goldberg who was even gloating on his firm page how he caused familly to become extremly poor and even pushed one with daughters to prostitution, this two were a real threat to McReary familly. While Derrick was most likely too drunken and druged to realise that Bruno isn't a big threat and Alden would most likely dissapear after being freed(he was just tired of protecting person who put him in the prison).

Huh...I always just figured the cops traced it back to Gerry because of A. How sloppy Packie and Derrick were with the robbery (arguing; mentioning Ireland, they're brothers, etc) and B. Michael's body was found at the crime scene, which would have traced back to the McReary's, along with the fact that all the brother's have a record and the police is aware of the McReary family's existance, even if they're a small time outfit. It'd just be a matter of putting the pieces together. The possibility of Ray being a rat might also enhance that, we learn in TLaD that Ray was in fact under investigation by the feds though that doesn't confirm him being a rat. But if he was, Ray would definately sell Gerry out. The old Irish-Italian fued goes back a century, maybe more. Especially in NYC. Source? I'm from NYC and of Sicilian descent. No one ever shut up about it there, from small time street guidos to wiseguys. Same with the Irish parts of Brooklyn.

Which wouldn't add up because they only got Gerry. Also, they would need evidence to attempt to charge him with those crimes. Gerry was the only one arrested.

I never thought Derrick could be the snitch, you forgot one small detail that could seal this deal So Derrick tell you to kill Aiden, but Patrick come with the prison break idea because if Aiden die cops would immediately question Derrick, when you finish that mission you can see in the internet the news about Aiden disappearing Well missions later (specifically after Niko kidnapps Gracie) you can see in the news Aiden´s body was found, so who do you think they visit after this discovery? exactly, Derrick and he probably take this chance to snitch on Gerald to get away from this murder "but in that mission Gerry is already in jail and Derrick/Francis are dead" you say? but remember news get out after a time, police probably wouldn´t give this information immediately and in this moment Derrick is already dead or probably fleed to Ireland again so there is no point in holding this information

Wait Aiden O'Malley was only 49 when you killed him? He looks older than Derrick, but he's younger? He looks like he's in his late 60s early 70s.

The backstory behind Packie and Gerry is one of the most disturbing in any of Rockstars games, the entire McReary family in general is probably the worst you could ask for.

I have a brief theory about the timeline for your choices in the gta4 story: I believe it's canonically accurate for Derrick to die, since in the time gta5 passes he's already dead, and Packie also never even speak about Francis. Also, it is confirmed that the revenge emding was canon since in Jimmy's laptop at Michael's house shows us that Niko had recently activities with Roman, which implies that Kate really died.

Regarding the mention of Tony Soprano, people always try to downplay that shot with the baby's carseat, but the fact is that the shot is there to signify that Tony was indeed bothered by the fact that Christopher's child could have been killed due to Christopher's irresponsibility. This does not make it the sole deciding factor, but it certainly helped solidify Tony's justification for eliminating Christopher. Tony now understood that Christopher had let himself go and now his own life was endangered by Christopher, the crime family was endangered by Christopher, and even a helpless child was as good as dead with Christopher around. Tony may be a cold killer, but we cannot forget that he has a soft spot for creatures that he considers "innocent" or "helpless", which likely includes infants. In Tony's mind it was yet another good reason to off Chris. Despite the fact that Tony is a sociopath, he is not a character that is devoid of a conscience and is capable of compassion, however fleeting and minuscule that compassion may be.

Actually it could be Elizabeta Torres. She was locked up for a very long time and had connections to Packie and the McReary family. Maybe she snitched to get a lesser prison sentence

Packie thinks Niko is dead? Yeah right, Niko probably thinks Packie is dead, and he's probably right by the time GTA 6 comes out.

I think Derrick could’ve gotten arrested after the bank job because then he could say this was Geralds idea after all Gerald did get charged for armed robbery and racketeering

Makes sense because Derrick literally used to get high and drunk in open in a public park where lot of people could easily be able to see him and report about him. Plus there is a Police Station close to the park so it would also mean that an officer while on patrol saw him and arrested him and just to avoid jail time he most probably bribed the officers through the share he earned from the heist and told them about the heist and also about who the master mind of the heist is.

Nah, even if he had snitched on the others for that, he still would have been jailed for life, for murdering that guy who shot Michael (along with Packie), armed robbery with hostage taking, and for the murders of several police officers and N.O.O.S.E (SWAT) officers. Snitching doesn't always prevent jail, sometimes they just knock a few years off, but considering he not only murdered a hostage (regardless of said hostage killing his associate), but also several policemen, he would have still been in jail for the rest of his life with no possibilty of parole, even after snitching. He was more than likely arrested for drug possession, which can carry a sentence even if for own use, esp if it was in public, and the person has form for that and for any other crime, which he did. A crime like that though, he could avoid jail for that after turning state's on someone on their most wanted list, such as Gerry

My theory, sort of related to this video: *Niko killing Francis is the canon outcome and a drug overdose killed Derrick around the time the story ended; both dead, because even if you spare Derrick and kill Francis, Packie says his ma is "all he got left" after the Revenge ending and Kate's death, which is strange, as Derrick was quite close with Packie and their ma!! Another reason: Derrick's grave in Steinway (you can walk straight through it), while Francis' grave in Colony Island (is completely solid, like a normal gravestone)!!

I'm not going to lie. I hate Francis but allowing him to live is a way his mother could have at least one child. Yes, he is a hypocrite, but she would have that peace of having at least one child.

Derrick could've been alive but not for long, Packie is not a fool and knows his elder brother - with his habbits he could've gotten overdosed or killed while obtaining his dose (lets not forget crime in the city)

In GTA V, if you pick Packe for the Paleto score, he’ll mentioned that Derrick has also died. He doesn’t specify if he got killed by someone or a drug overdose, but either way, whichever way you pick, Derrick dies either way, so when you spare him, he ends up dying from a drug overdose

When killing Bucky, I didn't feel guilty but it was different in case of aiden. I had suspicion of aiden not being the mole. And all the time I thought Gerry was ratted by any Mafia family, Ancelotti for screwing them up . But I thought it could be Derrick because in his missions there must be witnesses and then the polices used him to know about Gerry blackmailing Derrick to be arrested. Derrick becomes a bigger suspicion because just after Derrick's mission and dealing with Francis and Derrick , Gerry was caught. This couldn't be coincidental

I think you're writing off Francis too easily. He wants Derrick dead, and Packie ends up leaving after TBOGT. Kate is not a threat, and what is it that Francis wants? He wants a good reputation, which entails no more crimes from his brothers, at least in Liberty City. With Gerry imprisoned, Derrick dead and Packie leaving, he's accomplished exactly what he needed.

I kinda wrote Francis off after packy said Francis can’t touch him due to gerry having dirt on him. It only makes sense to me that if Francis wanted Gerry dead over it he would’ve sent niko on Gerry instead of locking him up giving him a chance to rat

@@nickysantoro7280 he wouldn't want Gerry imprisoned and honestly if Francis becomes police commissioner there is a good chance that Gerry's life inside the klink becomes alot nicer so to speak. Gaurd won't lay a finger and brother probably hooks him up in the commissary to keep him quiet. Knowing Gerry by GTA5 he's probably a big time shot caller and living comfortably inside jail because his brother has liberty state political connections.

@@nickysantoro7280 I mean yeah because Francis McCreary wouldn't risk his ass and political career. Besides all the illegal actions he committed no he's dirty but he's not going to rat out Gerry. If anything even though Francis had you kill derrick McCreary he still loves Packie and Gerry to a degree. Logically speaking he also found our derrick was a rat too. I mean in a weird way Francis killing his brother probably seemed merciful to his brothers heroin addiction that still would have killed him by the end of GTA4.

I think honestly it's a hard to see a canon choice for blood brothers and that's kinda why it's not confirmed yet. Killing Derrick gives you in game benefits but the family cares more about derrick and you kinda go against your own values (being a criminal, siding with a cop). However I see it as if you kill Derrick also ironically helpful as it does rid of someone who already is kinda dead (drug use), and on top of that there's no chance of Niko being ratted out for killing Derrick. The difference here is if you kill Francis, Derrick has nothing to lose ratting you out(not necessarily family, but just around the public), while Francis does as he has his entire career on the line, and the fact that even though he has dirt on Niko, he can pull him down with him. Also funnily enough if you fail the mission, the whole idea of being "put away" (supposedly the statement meant to threaten Niko) kinda falls flat as Francis merely insults Niko for keeping Derrick alive. I think it'd be cool if there was a canon option tho. I mean it does seem that Nikos a bit closer towards Derrick then Francis and seems more inclined to help him but who knows. Derricks clearly suffering and in pain so maybe that's why Niko feels more sympathetic.

I'm sure Jerry escaped when Johnny and the Lost attacked the prison. Imagine if we see him in the future gta online updates

@@mohdadeeb1829 regardless of whenever you can play this mission in YOUR save file, mission #67 in the gta iv chronological order between all 3 games is "I'll Take Her", with the last mission of the TLAD taking place during or after "Weekend at Florian's" and "Get Lost". @@darknid158 Me personally, I did Gerry's first missions at his house long after killing Ray, so it would sense in my playthrough as to why he wouldn't escape during Lost's rampage on the prison.

I believe that niko killing Derek is the cannon ending keeping Francis alive helps niko with the lcpd also niko dislikes drug addict and Derek is beyond help so I believe niko kills him

@@ethanvern4600 More like Niko is against drugs, but this could be easily altered throughout the game. Niko is against drugs, not people who consume drugs. Little Jacob, close friend of his, consumes weed all the time. if Niko was against people who consume drugs, he wouldn't go out with LJ.

@Jokūbas Varanauskas Makes more sense to kill Francis, seeing as Derrick will die anyway. Be rid of the pair of them. Kiki offers the same benefit as him and does it more often and still does it after completion. Plus, if you kill Frankie, the funeral mission is much shorter and easier

I hated having to shoot either derrick or francis.

It's weird because, morally, Niko is happy if he saves Derrick. Mostly because the poor guy lacks true context. The only way Niko can find out Derrick ratted on Aiden and Bucky is through Kate, and his reaction is goddamn priceless.

Derrick was a freedom fighter of the IRA- which is not a terrorist group but a liberation group. And he will always be way better than Francis, and would never go to the extent of killing his own brother. If you read Derrick's wiki, it says that he has been arrested multiple times ever since he was a juvenile during violent protests. So fighting against the system is his nature. Also, Derrick truly regrets the snitching part, he's an alright man apart from his snitching and the drug addiction. He cannot be the one who ratted out Gerry, he could never fall that low. He literally says that he's not going anywhere now to look after his family, and had to tell niko to kill bucky because of his threats to kill Derrick and his family. Derrick doesn't deserve so much hate. He's one of the most decent characters in the game. Or at least he tries.

I agree. What derrick did to aiden and bucky is basically what michael did to trevor and brad. They did it out of necessity, not for fun.

​@@setro5582these are all good points. But the difference was that Michael wasn't a drug addict. I think that's the nail in the coffin for Derrick. I'm pretty sure he could have ratted just to feed his addiction. Especially with heroin.

It doesn't have to be Derrick who ratted out Gerry but he did rat out his fellow former IRA friends Bucky Sligo and Aiden O'Malley.

Derrick being the rat definitely adds more layers to that choice for Niko as a character, given he also experienced being ratted out by a strung up junkie they trusted back in Europe.

Derrick is already confirmed a rat by Aiden O'Malley (the guy in the prison van Derrick sends Niko and Packie to kill), who tells Niko he's only in prison because Derrick ratted him out. Packie tells Niko the same thing about Derrick ratting out his friends to avoid doing serious time in prison himself. I believe Niko killed Derrick and not Frankie, niko despised rats for what happened to him with Darko in the old country when he ratted to them ang got his friends killed, and honestly i believe niko thought Derrick was going to die soon from a overdose anyway. And if my memory doesn't fail i remember Derrick telling him he wanted to die or something

It only makes sense. By killing Derrick, Niko would be doing the McReary family a big favour. Killing Derrick would save Francis's career, protect Gerald as Derrick wouldn't be able to further incriminate Gerald. Derrick was too far gone and was bound to OD anyway. Packie would most probably prefer Niko killed Derrick too, as Packie was closer to Gerald. The McReary mom also seemed like she had a soft spot for Francis, calling him a saint at his funeral because he was the only one who ended up being somewhat legitimate and honest. Killing Derrick is better for Niko personally too, as Niko would be able to earn some money, have connections to the police, help his love interests family, put Derrick out of his misery. Killing Derrick also aligns with Niko's morals, as Niko finds loyalty to be very important.

I killed Francis because he was always threatening to blackmail Niko and the last thing he needed was another person trying to blackmail him, I knew derrick was fucked but his character was kinda funny and he was destined to die from the needle anyways. In reality I wanted to kill em both.

Yeah, there is that (the blackmail threats) and then there's the fact that the mcreary's that niko likes accept derrick for who he is and would probably mourn him more than francis overall

Packie watches his whole familiy turn to hell Geralds in Jail Derrick died of an overdose at some point Francis can Also die thats 2 dead If You spared Derrick Kate is dead, If You go on the "Good ending" So Packie can be the lone Survivor Or You can kill him for some Reason in GTA 5, not sure why You would kill Packie but... Okay

His dad Mr mcreary died in early 2000s i guess Francis was killed by Niko In 2008 Before Francis funeral happend Gerry was arrested in 2008 Kate Dies at the end of the game in 2008 Derrick Dies in 2010 Ms Mcreary died in 2011 Packie is alive and saw his own family collapse in few years

I gave Derrick the hard goodbye for three main reasons. 1. Francis might have been a corrupt officer that impresses hitmen into doing vigilante work for him, but Derrick is an international terrorist that has a history of tuning on his various accomplices after the fact. 2. Francis has *far* more to lose, which makes him more controllable than a junkie that thinks out loud on park benches. 3. The moral dilemma really boils down to weather you tolerate hypocrites or traitors more, and Niko's primary motivation for being in Liberty City is to confront a traitor from his past in spite of how much of a hypocrite he might become along the way.

On my very first play through of GTA IV's storyline, I was stoked to be associating with Irish gangsters because Irish gangs/mob weren't heavily featured in video games (come to think about it, neither are today really) but my excitement wore down quick, shit show after shit show.

Gerald McReary is still alive and could return to GTA6 lol. Packie is probably rich after the UD heist. Liz Torres or Pegorino could have been the rat too, maybe even Billy Grey. Gerry knew a lot of people.

Billy Grey never had contact with the McReary family. The Lost never dealt with the Irish at all.

The funniest thing about Francis being worried that Derrick is back is not that he will potentially expose him …no he’s not worried about that it’s not about the prestige of his career he can deal with a scandal lol he’s worried about having a snitch for a brother meaning no cop in the world will trust him and that will end his career which means all the cops are dirty lol
