How Nick Spencer Redeemed Spider-Man

Ойын-сауық

here's a video that's not about Spider-Man games. It's about comics. You know, those things no one reads and companies basically treat like supplemental material for their movie franchises.

@@DevilfishFace Yeah. Making it on level with like Stark Industries... a bit much. But making it a smaller company or more specific field in the tech/science sector worked. Kind of like the vibe we got when Peter was in Horizon. Not a "Parker branded item" but some tech he sells to a bigger company and gets royalties to and what not. That freedom to invent but also to go out and Spider-Man.

Here's the thing that Slott misses; Peter Parker isn't Spider-Man's worst enemy, Spider-Man is Peter Parker's worst enemy. His relationships with those around him often appear toxic, but in reality he is always trying to make them right, with Spider-Man often holding him back, and the self-destruction is a result of his morals. Peter suffers because he does the right thing. It is in many ways, as you said, out of his control really. The only thing he could do is give up being Spider-Man, which although he tries to a lot, his guilt and sense of responsibility always brings him back to it.

I say there another alternative to salvage his relationships and it’s to let more people in on his secret because a lot of the damage comes from having to ditch them seemingly without explanation because he needs to save people as Spider-Man and telling them even if they end up worrying about him and his well being they’ll ultimately either understand or if the choose not to it’s not gonna work out with them just look at pre new 52 Jaime Reyes who was able to strike that balance between his professional and social life by being open with his family best friends his girlfriend local hero’s like The Posse The JLA etc A secret identity is extremely important but the point of one is to both maintain a life outside of super heroics and to keep your villains from finding out to protect your loved ones neither of which mean you have to keep them out

I have actually watched a video that say the opposite of that. "Spider-Man is not a Burden" is the title of it I think or the thumbnail, but it goes into depth about the original Steve Ditko and Stan Lee run of the character and how the dichotomy of Peter's and Spidey's relationship was. As it turns out it wasn’t that toxic or much of a big deal. I think really, it's supposed to be a mixture of both. When Peter can't pay for web fluid it affects Spider-Man. When the Villain is hunting for Spider-Man's friends it affects Peter. Neither of them are supposed to really be the "worst enemy" because they are the same person. There is a mixture of both that is always carefully balanced.

@@pyroshell5652 as this video shows, Slott has tried to have Peter make better use of his brains by giving him gadgets, designed by him, AND also state peter parker is his own worst enemy. this video shows slott has been hit-and-miss in that regard THE PS4 game however has shown it can be done. first the gadgets, which are shwon to be really helpful without making spidey feel like a poor man's iron man or batman. (especially with the many suits giving him different abilities) AND the game shows spider-man being his own worst enemy in more subtle ways. LIKE him getting evicted from his apartment because he couldn't pay rent on time. Or him and MJ breaking up because Peter worried about her too much (a justified fear, but moving on), Or him supposedly making Otto's insanity get worse due to Peter not being around enough to notice the worsening signs, justfor simply things like "spiey stuff" or "personal stuff", and the same goes for Him not getting to spend enough time with Aunt May for simple things anyone could be doing, or more important things like spidey saving people (and one could argue the same goes to Yuri). That is actually a great way to make Spidey/Pete his own wosrt enemy, while keeping his status of "the underdog that the univese uses as punching bag" (after all, there is no one pete would know that doing a simple personal stuff like searching his things that were thrown to garbage for not being able to pay rent would lead to him spening less time with aunt may before his death). ALSO how at the end Pete wants to avoid doing any important science stuff besides gadgets out of fear and guilt to what happened to Otto. That's a better way to set pete as his own worst enemy then Slott did (especially the moment when pete was this close of using the cure only on may, only to restrain himself, despite how much it hurts). That's why i think PS4! Peter and Spidey are Slott's Peter and Spider-Man done right

@Wally Webbs Except the comedians in question mostly get their value through the people that love them. The people that hate them is largely a side effect of making people like them, rather than another intended advantage. Sure, clout from hate can be beneficial too, but is much less likely to get you viewers or tickets to your show or whatever, than positive attention does. And clout is only valuable when you're an unknown. Negative clout is beneficial since even if people give you negative attention, getting people to talk about you, even if it's negative, will get people to hear about you, and some of those people are bound to get interested. Spider man though? Just about *everyone* knows about spider man, there's nearly no benefit in 'getting people to hear about you', since they almost certainly already have. And nevertheless, as much as negative attention can give you a *spike* in popularity, people will eventually ignore it completely. People like shitting on bad things, but if it brings a negative reading experience then people will just stop checking it out after enough time. It may have garnered some sales at the time of release, but it may have had some permanent damage on the spider man brand. Not to mention as much as it can situationally be good marketing, it's still terrible artistry. Deliberately making shit content that sells is not very respectable, especially with an already-beloved franchise.

@Jacob Wood Remender is known for creating these big, game-changing storylines in every other issue for nothing more than sheer shock value. In Uncanny Avengers for example, he murdered half the team and destroyed the world, only to bring it back a few issues later. In Captain America, his first arc involved Cap basically going through an Old Man Logan arc - which is fine, until he uses the opportunity to kill Sharon Carter and make Cap an old man with no powers for several years. And in Rise of Ultron, he needlessly killed off Hank Pym. Again, none of these stories were built up, they were all for shock value, but I hear his creator-owned work is actually pretty good. Oh, and there was the one time he told his questioning fans to “drown yourselves in hobo piss”, but that’s a bit unrelated.

Honestly Spiderman stories these days just seem to want to smash the bullshit that came out after One More Day. Spiderman has a meaningful relationship with MJ in the game and deals with hard adult stuff in the movie, Aunt May is actually allowed to die and Spiderman in the game has the choice to save her at the expense of making a VERY POOR decision and unlike One More Day, he doesn't take it and lets nature take its course. The movie, as far as I am aware, shows that being Spiderman is not a fun thing and is taking a toll on Peter and now all the dumb shit in modern Spiderman is being criticized. Seeing all this makes me feel very optimistic and I don't even follow Spiderman comics currently. Spiderman is allowed to love, learn and lose in meaningful ways.

How Pete tried to cut that part of his mind off from Ock and endanger the little girl for his own benefit... I couldn't believe it when I read that... You totally nailed it. It's hard to say exactly where the problems truly began, but it's blatantly obvious where they went critical- One More Day. OMD was a story based _entirely_ around Peter Parker acting like the exact _opposite_ of Peter Parker because that was what had to happen to get the resolution the suits wanted (Peter and MJ unmarried without the baggage of divorce). So when May gets shot by a perfectly normal sniper bullet that can't be healed by the finest science or most powerful magic in the entire Marvel universe, apparently because it's "her time to die", Peter can't face the prospect of life without his mummy figure and goes to _ridiculous_ lengths to try and save her even when _May herself_ tells him to let her go and be reunited with her Ben. When it's pointed out that May might only have a couple more years of life left anyway, he whines "At least it won't be my fault!", which said it all. At the heart of the story was the idea that _nothing_ mattered more than _Peter's_ feelings, _Peter's_ inability to take responsibility for the consequences of his actions (May got shot because he changed sides in the Civil War even after he'd unmasked, making her vulnerable). And all of the Brand New Day era written by Slott that followed was built on this same ground, a selfish, self-centered Peter Parker who merely pays lip service to the "power and responsibility" moral he'd lived by for almost half a century. It was repulsive, but hopefully it seems to be _finally_ over. However, I'd still like to see a story where Peter cashes in that favour he still has with Loki for helping save his daughter that time (assuming I didn't miss something and he already had), teams up with Deadpool again for his 4th wall awareness powers of what was changed, and the three of them go kick Mephisto's ass. That'd be sweet.

What Slott may or may not realize is that his thing with slamming Peter for keeping and then losing Parker Industries will haunt the character for years if not decades to come. It will be used casually against him almost as much as Hank Pym-616 striking Janet, except this involves more than one character's forgiveness (not that this has always helped Hank's standing in the fandom - the fact that Jan forgave him but ended their marriage as a result). Peter will now always be a mass unemployer and fraud in an era where economic pain is felt sharply. Watch one of his former employees become the next "I don't care about explanations" supervillain. What, really, was he supposed to do upon awakening as leader of this huge company? Any solution was likely to see many unemployed people. His unearned degrees were bound to cause some shame and stigma, even if he moved on those quickly. I think a more positive writer would actually find a way to give Peter some credit for keeping up the facade even for a little while. The fact that he was able to, even for a time, means to me that just as Spidey is perhaps far stronger than he is given credit for, Peter is deep down far smarter. Instead, Slott pulls a Riker on Parker. Remember how the writers of TNG liked Riker right where he was but now had to have compulsory sub-plots slamming him for not taking his own command? You can't join in the chorus of 'LOSER!' when you are the one who made the character that way - and I mean him specifically. As sure as the sun rises and sets, comics fans will witness cycles in which Peter and Johnny Storm grow and mature, only to be yanked back by writers that want to again portray them as idiots.

@@wdcain1 I felt the opposite. Brand New Day imo was awful and boring, and was so hard for me to read through. I dont think I thought a single issue of Brand New Day, with the exception of Rage of the Rhino, was anything better than mediocre. Then when Slott took the full reigns instead of being rotated, things picked up with No One Dies and Spider-Island. Then the average became okay instead of mediocre, and I loved the buildup and execution of Ends of the Earth. Doctor Octopus and the Sinister Six are such great Spider villains, and the story works pretty well. For ASM #700, I liked that specific comic, but most of Superior Spidey sucked, and everything after was hot garbage, until his final story: Go Down Swinging. So basically Slott was fine in the beginning, but for most of his run he sucked.

It's also worth noting that, in his final moments, the Slott Spider-Man has a genuine moment where he tells Peter to lighten up and enjoy his life. I think this is Spencer not so subtly telling readers that, just because Peter is actually responsible now, it doesn't mean he'll be boring.

First I thought it might happen after Superior, then maybe after Secret Wars, then maybe after Secret Empire in Legacy, but he just kept at it and he kept missing the mark completely as far as what makes Spider-Man who he is, and my personal favorite superhero. I don't even know why I kept reading during so many years. I haven't started reading Spencer's run yet (comics come a little later to my country), but this makes me feel hope for the future of my dear Spidey.

I rewatched this video and I felt sad. After that, I decided to re-read Spencer run. I see that many people write that this video is poorly aged, but no, absolutely not. It's still a great run. Peter again understood the meaning of responsibility. Randy returned and started dating Beetle (Tombstone's daughter). Pete and MJ are back together. Peter lost his doctorate, which received Otto. After that, he went to study with Curt Connors to get his doctorate, on one's own. Boomerang became a hero who sacrificed his life for the Spider-Man. Peter and Felicia are friends again. Carly became interesting, started dating Overdrive and became friends with MJ. Jonah met with his ghosts of the past. Stories about Curt and Billy (Billy's clone is to have the soul of the original, this is confirmed) in Hunted. Also stories about Felicia's feelings and Mary Jane's evolution after the Kraven's Last Hunt. Sergey Kravinoff promised that he would not hunt again in this life or the next, and then died fighting his clone son (Dan Slott also believed that Kraven should be dead, so he never used him in his run). Hell, I even cried over Gibbon's death. A story about Mary Jane where she saves an actress from Electro. A new all-female Sinister Syndicate. Great dialogue between Peter and Aunt May about how he doesn't want to lose MJ again, so May gives him an engagement ring to propose to Mary Jane. Teresa (Peter's sister) also returned. An epic and emotional battle between Peter and Norman-Carnage (Ryan Ottley's art is great). Miguel O'Hara got a happy ending, he now lives with his girlfriend and son. Podcast with Jonah. Gog returns and becomes Peter's pet (and I cried again when I read Gog's backstory). Return of the Sin Eater. In ASM #44, Peter explains how important MJ is to him. Team-up with Norman Osborn (for the first time in history). Creeping fight with Kindred. Good Norman. The story of Martin Lee and Aunt May. Of course, the brilliantly ASM #60, which, in my opinion, has become a modern classic. Return of Mephisto. The union of Robbie and Tombstone. The resurrection of Richard Fisk (Rose). The resurrection of Ned Leeds after his unnecessary death in the 80s. Spider-Man fought six Sinister Six. After Otto saves him, proving that even without the memories from Peter, he can be a hero. Retcon Sins Past. Explanation of Mephisto's plan. The Stacy twins are back and now they're clones. The return of Harry and the epic team-up with Peter. Pete and MJ's love defeats Mephisto and the Kindred. A mention of Peter and Mary Jane's daughter and that she will defeat Mephisto. There were so many good things about this run. Sure, Sinister War was an unfortunate arc, but I'm pretty sure it's the editors fault, not Nick's. I don't like what happened to Harry. But it's silly to call all run bad because of one bad story (it's the same as calling Straczynski's run bad because of OMD and Sins Past). It was a very emotional run in which many important events took place. There was a story of fathers and children, there was character evolution, drama, humor and the best modern Peter and Mary Jane. In my opinion, this is the best modern Spider-Man run after Straczynski. Nick Spencer's work doesn't deserve this kind of hate. He deserved respect.

I always thought Slot was instructed to deconstruct Spiderman because the MCU didn't own the rights to the movies during the majority of Slot's run, and the character of Spiderman was too important to cancel all his books in reaction (like they ultimately chose to do with the Fantastic Four). So you wind up with Spiderman arcs like Superior Spiderman (GREAT, but not about Peter Parker), between other arcs which push the whole post One More Day narrative, which is thoroughly awful (Parker doesn't have to be manbaby who lives with his aunt in his 30's, or single forever in order to have a good story arc, in fact it's generally the opposite that occurs in the hands of even great writers). Plus they have Miles Morales now, let him be the kid who is coming into his own, and let Parker be a seasoned hero with perspective. That's what actually works in context of the Marvel Universe's history.

Superior Spider-Man was where Dan Slott peaked in his Spider-Man run, if you ask me. Of course, Christ Yost wrote SpOck much better. Having said that, I don't hate Dan Slott either. Hell, I probably wouldn't have taken the full plunge into comics if it weren't for Superior Spider-Man, since the only other comic storyline I actively followed was the original Marvel Zombies saga. The only reason I even stopped reading Dan Slott's run after The Parker Luck was because I started reading other comics like Jason Aaron's Thor, Captain America: Steve Rogers (the book Nick Spencer wrote that everyone hated), and all of the Marvel NOW era Avengers titles (Avengers, New Avengers, Avengers World, and Uncanny Avengers), and that's just a few of the titles from the Marvel side I gave more attention than Dan Slott's Spider-Man run after Superior ended.

I'm really starting to hate that 'Down on his luck, relatable guy' setting. I mean it's nice to have someone you can relate to, but the setting is just tired and overused. It doesn't make realistic sense either, I mean someone as brilliant as Peter should be able to get a job with relative ease, the guy has higher IQ than *BATMAN, f*cking BATMAN!* It gets to point where it just becomes depressing instead of relatable, and Peter being the smart guy he is should be looking for a way to improve Peter Parker's life too not just Spider-Man's! He is aware that he isn't in the best position in life yet he does nothing about it despite being one of the smartest people in fiction. It just doesn't feel in character, I mean he constantly finds out ways to improve Spiderman despite there being no need to improve as Spider-Man but he completely ignores Peter Parker like he just doesn't matter, especially when Peter Parker's life should and desperately needs to improve yet he still doesn't make it a goal when he can benefit both Spider-Man and Peter Parker if he focuses on improving Peter Parker's life?! It's just jarringly out of character for one of the smartest people in fiction and this isn't limited to Slott's Spider-Man either, most versions in most runs do this! Plus, you can still have issues as a financially stable person, pressure of keeping your life stable, personal connection to super villains and most importantly being a *DAD!* Note: I am not at all saying bring back Parker Industries, I think that we can all agree that it would be a bad idea given what is happening in the current comics. Horizon Labs worked great last time where Peter would sell tech to Horizon Labs and get money for it, this way he doesn't become super rich and can still maintain some of his relatibility, it also puts Peter's skills as a genius to good use. Something like it can work again. Make him a atleast a moderately successful guy like in renew your vows. In fact renew your vows and spider-girl comics can be great sources of inspiration, and would be good pace changers and can even change the status quo. *Let Peter grow up! Let him be a Father!*

Before oringal sin would have uncovered something this. but was quickly changed to red skull using the cube to change captain America into a hyrda agent. Because of the backslash

@@nikomiller it was a really cheap twist and i wouldn't be surprised if he was meant to be the actual captain America hadn't been for the fans' backlash.

Let's not forget he's a cunt that fucked captain America and doesn't even understood that character and his supporting cast like falcon and red skull. For duck sakes, just because you think nazis are running the American government doesn't mean you make Hydra nazis too.Its been established that those guys have existed long long before Hitler was born and they didn't even agree with him (they just saw his party as pawns to use in their own game).

Spencer's done more for Spider-Man than anyone in the last ten years, since JMS.

So...he brought MJ and Peter back together and then split them up for most of the run. Very nice, so JMS... Ok, he puts Peter back in ESU... and does nothing with it. Oh, he killed of Kraven just to replace him with the clone right away... YAY! Maybe he did something about aunt May illness? Nope. He pretty much focused on teasing us Kindred and making Boomerang more interesting that the main character of the book. Nice! Oh, yeah... he made Black cat to remember who Spider is. But he does nothing with it. Instead MJ and BC got their own series to sell. Remember spec SM #6 by Zdarsky? Slott made awesome stuff with JJ out of it. What Spencer managed to do with it? He made JJ insufferable idiot again. Hooray, character development! What else was there... the tablet. WTF? Why do you need to bring this old shit back? To resurect THE ROSE? WHY? You're not gonna do shit with this character, so why bother? And also... there was chamelion and Teresa stuff... but we got Zdarsky to thank for brining Teresa back I guess. Future prediction stuff... that's a bad rip off of civil war 2. Get some new ideas Nick! The only actually good stuff he did was Kindred and his development. But this storie drags for 74 issues (excluding tie-ins and LR issues) thats too much don't you think? 3 years of pretty much nothing new, just to bring old status quo back. It's good that they're going to erase OMD, but me personally, I never asked for that! I don't want MJ and Peter back together, cause none of the writers know what to do with them (JMS is exception, and maybe DeMatteis but he never focused on them). Spencers run is a proof of that.

@@grassnax Lol I’d say he continued Zdarsky’s work with JJJ in the Lifetime Achievement story. He also made Spider-Man a hero I can respect again rather than the insufferable jerk he was for the last 7 years.

@@grassnax C'mon, you know better than to take that out of context. And he paid the consequences for that decision. Also, he knew Osborn wouldn't DIE, otherwise he never would've done that. Thats pretty clear when you read the storyline.

@@goldenstatewarriors9418 ok...so what about his new "job" as spider-man? Nick made it clear that spider-man commercializing on himself is not his way... but he does exactly the same thing with the new suit. No?
