    From the very beginning, I loved that this movie dropped the facade of a "horror superhero flick" like the first one, a tonal mismatch that ended up getting in the way of the much more entertaining campy stuff. Thus one managed to go full 90s cheesy, even managing to include some dark stuff here and there. I'm genuinely looking forward to a third one, I just hope the MCU influence won't mutter this movies unique style for their more formulaic manners.

    Even though my favorite venom will always be spectacular because of how he combines my favorite elements of everything, even down to the tragic life he lead (while also giving him a better way to be a darker reflection of peter and better motivations), even that version has bits of goofyness which is important to the character of venom. Venom to me is a scary yet goofball character when he's a villain and even an anti hero. I really loved reading the 90s edgy books both ironically and unironically, especially the hunger! I think people have a twisted vision of the 90s era. One half thinks it's the best thing ever because of all the fun time they had with it, while the other half thinks it's the worst thing ever because of all the stupid stuff that came with it. Guess what? Both halves are right. Yes, it was a cool time for Spidey and his fans where they would always get some action, but it was also a lame time for the rest because they would keep overstuffing the stories with too much stuff at the same time, which is what almost got Marvel bankrupt at the time. As much as people have fond memories of it, there are things better left in the past.

    There's also the fact that the story is very flimbsy and you're only gonna really appreciate the film if you know the references and vibes the movie goes for. No one asks the Venom movies to be fart smelling high art but putting some actual substance in the story wouldn't hurt, Raimi's Spiderman films did a way better job at representing its source material with goofs included, and it's not like the stories in those movies is revolutionary, it's just really solid stories.

    I had a good time with the movie, but if there’s one glaring issue I have with it, it’s Carnage. Now he definitely looks cool (dodgy CGI not withstanding), but I feel like the character feels a little watered down. I’m not referring to the PG-13 rating, although putting a violent character like Carnage in a PG-13 setting for his first live-action portrayal feels like a missed opportunity. I feel like there’s a lot of aspects about the character that this movie didn’t really get. Like, the idea of Cletus and the symbiote not being compatible. Like that’s the entire point of Carnage. It’s the reason why he refers to himself as “I” instead of “we” because both the host and the parasite so perfectly in-sync. Lastly, and this is kinda nitpicky, but the voice is too deep for me. It’s a fine voice in of itself, but I think a higher-pitched, more unhinged voice would best suit Carnage. The movie voice sounds more appropriate for Toxin than anyone else really.

    Carnage was done pretty poorly, what with them not actually bonding. In the comics they’re like the perfect pair. Could he have been better if he was rated r? Hell yes. Cletus’ only thinks about mutilation, he craves blood. In the movie he was just… watered down. Diluted. His death in the movie also bothered me. Also the humor is cringe as hell, and I rarely use that word

    Xavier, I'm really curious to hear how you felt about Carnage as a character. The whole "They're not a match" thing really bothered me, because isn't that the whole point of Carnage - he's a perfect match with Cletus? So much that they're ONE entity, not two like Venom and Eddie are? I dunno, that part really bugged me, along with Carnage dying in only one movie. If you happen to read this, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  • @fabiansackl6736

    @fabiansackl6736

    Was surprised he didn't mention how they handled Carnage. What you wrote is exactly what I was thinking. Cletus and Carnage are just a perfect match. It goesn't get any more symbiotic than those two actually are. The 90's animated series depicted that beautifully. As soon as the symbiote bonded with Cletus, there was just one entity present - Carnage, not "We" as in Cletus and Symbiote. And Carnage was having a hell of a time just being able to wreak as much chaos as possible, killing, torturing for no specific reason at all other than it being fun. In the film they are at odds with each other, barely symbiotic, having different interests and motivations. They nailed the look at at times the voice. But the characterization was just off. Another little nitpick was that I was hoping to hear at least one truly maniacal laughter.

  • @saidi7975

    @saidi7975

    For the most part, it is absolutely in-synch with Cletus and they are of one sadistic bloodthirsty mind... except where Shriek's powers are concerned. Eddie sways "they're not a match " to prop up Venom's spirits and have him save Anne. I mean, once Shriek is KOed, Clete and Carnage are in-synch again to try eating Anne... The way Carnage is handled, to my guess, is to make more fitting as a Venom antagonist. I still liked the movie version but I acknowledge that he is a lot more stern and no-nonsense than comics Carnage (who acts a lot more like Chuck Lee Ray...). They have something in common that is hardly adressed: ARROGANCE. The fight would've been over if Carnage just straight up finished Venom instead of twirling his mustache...which is also the cause of his defeat in most comics, dude never learns....

  • @SoIstice

    @SoIstice

    Honestly, that just feels like a plot device they used to justify Venom being able to beat Carnage with minimal outside help and not a lot of experience as Venom so far. They just let him exploit the desync and beat his ass. I think it works fine for an hour and 30 minute movie. Now would I want them to do that to Carnage in a TV show or game? Hell no, but for a movie like this, it really doesn't bother me.

    @@saidi7975 id argue carnage has learned alot actually, as showcased by his interactions with Norman Osborn in Absolute Carnage (since at the time Norman believed he was cletus kasady and basically was just the 90's carnage once he got infected by one of the carnage offshoots). But yeah, he did have that issue for awhile. And he took a long time to learn.

    Real talk, Knull the symbiote god is HEAVILY being foreshadowed in the MCU now. Eternals sets up the ebony blade which was a key event surrounding Knull in the Symbiote Spider-Man line of comics. Gorr the God butcher is the main antagonist in Thor Love and Thunder in which he HAS to use All Black. And Venom 2 straight up mentions the Symbiote hive mind and it’s multiverse spanning girth.

    Really wish that more superhero films would be willing to embrace what makes comic books so fun. Y'know, aside from, like, the Joel Schumacher Batman films. Those are just awful period, I don't care what anyone says. That version of Batman just doesn't work, whereas i can at least get behind Venom being a total goofball. The closest we maybe got to that sort of Batman since then was Justice League's take on Batfleck, but that film has its own issues (although its still nowhere near as much of a mess as Batman and Robin).
