It is true. We need to learn/relearn how to sit properly. We tend to do awkward things throughout our lives since we are very tiny (why it is good to correct small children) but we continue these awkward stances or positions until we FINALLY FIX IT! But how can we fix it? It personally was really hard to find the information. Having an amazing ballet teacher who taught about how the body moves and affects other body parts really helped me!! The classic “sit up straight” statement is not helpful abd can become harmful because we are usually forcing a “supermen pose” that is not helping 😅

I tried that exercise of standing against the wall, knees bent, but not a thigh burn, back of the head against the wall, holding for 3 minutes. OMG! What a difference. Holding good posture came naturally. I even started walking better. Now as the day wears on, I need to do that exercise again, trying to do it 3 times per day, including your recommendation of sitting against the wall when checking my cell phone. Thank you!

Thank you! I was searching for recommendations on how to sit when mindlessly browsing internet. I realized all my bad habits only when I started to do exercises to fix my posture :( Always looking down and hunched back when taking showers, always resting my elbows on any table I'm working or eating at regardless of its height, a terrible terrible position when relaxing at bed... and a long etc. Been doing exercises for almost a month and I'm starting to feel better. It's less "demanding" (for lack of a better word) for my body to keep the right alignment when doing the activities I mentioned. If you are short like me (5') and can't reach the floor when sitting do not underestimate the importance of footrests. This was also causing my slouching on chairs. Starting with the exercises can be super hard because the body just refuses to move like that (wall slides were practically impossible for me so I did them while laying on the floor) but after a while you will see an increase in mobility and it's awesome. I'm constantly stretching throughout the day, especially now that I'm working from home, and it feels great!

Loved this one for showing what NOT to do. I had no idea that working those ab muscles like that was counterproductive to my kyphosis posture. Also if we only allowed ourselves to be on our phone or iPad when we would be sitting with our back against the wall…two things would happen… 1. Our posture would improve greatly 2. We would spend a lot less time looking at our devices. That’s NOT a comfortable position. Win win.

I have a tip if you have forward head and hip posture, while sitting push the bottom of you're ribcage back just enough to extend you're spine so its in the natural position usually you're belly would probably have rolls it should now be flat (or flatter) dont despair if this increases the hunch as this is the starting position now tuck you're chin to you're chest and push up softly with you're thumb and with the other hand feel you're vertebrae in you're neck the more you do it the better and after a week you'll feel the less prominent vertebrae start to pronounce more.

So, I slouch a lot. I slouch when I walk, stand, and sit down. I have decided that when ever I'm watching something in my room or looking through social media I will sit oh my bed and have my back and head against the wall. Only maybe 2-3 days after doing so I noticed that it became easier and even natural to stand, walk, and sit straighter!

Yes those are good if theh are going to force you to improve your posture. Correct posture is more about getting rid of bad habits throughout the day, and a bit less about exercises. You can't outweight 16 hours of bad posture a day, with 40 minutes exercises.

I had sever kyphosis from 100 extra pounds of weight. This made me lack in self confidence so I would slouch my shoulders to try and hide myself I guess. My upper back and hamstrings were incredibly tight doing most of the work (laborer so I really need my whole body all day). My hips were so tilted foward. I had almost no lateral muscle because of this. My hips were so pointy and almost touching my ribs... I didn't even notice until I slowly popped and stretched my spine out. My calfs, biceps, triceps, and butt muscles were rolled up pretty much dead. My shoulders were so stuck I couldn't drop them more then an inch and a half from my ear. My clavicle was at 65° angle. Bad posture absolutely wreaked havoc on my body. I've been correcting it for 2 weeks now and the results are tremendous.

They pull the shoulders back, but they don't correct the neck muscle imbalances which is main problem, and will lead to premature degeneration of the neck. Do chin tucks every 1-2 days, 10-15x hold for 5 seconds. Do isometric holds (stand with back to wall, make shoulders and head also touch wall, then step away from wall, holding position for as long as comfortable. Do this often. Always be conscious of posture all day. Refuse to ever relax in bad posture, especially during this correction phase, which realistically will be 3-6 months before your body has restructured muscles, tendons, ligaments, spine, to be naturally straight. Don't rush or overstretch, or you will injure.

@@koriribarsosio4174 no problem, what I wrote was basically my instructions from my physiotherapist, as I'm also correcting my posture. Also prescribed was light exercises that target the Rhomboids (midback), with exercise bands that are indicated to tighten them, so shoulders are naturally pulled back by the Rhomboids increased musculature and tone. That helps straighten curved back and better align the upper spine.

It is sooooo hard to remember and I cannot find tips ): The only tip I have ever found is to pretend you are trying to look over a fence as you go about your day (and pretend a string is attached to your head). But there must be more tips out there????

I've had a very bad hunch for 14+ years, I've been hitting the gym doing lots of lateral and chest work and exercises to compensate for about a year and I'm beginning to see improvements. It's a long grind but muscles can be retrained, I wish I'd learned years ago that this shit isn't permanent but we move

As someone who has a bad posture I'll tell you: It's gonna take forever, coz you'd need to change everything, and it's more mentally than you think it is physically. Note: i saw a physiotherapist n was told to do mainly pulling exercises that did almost nothing, no results. My sister saw a chiropractor n she didn't get any benefit n the chiro visits didn't fix her posture.
