How Joints Form In Rocks

Ғылым және технология

An elongated fracture is called a joint. Joints play an important role in both weathering & erosion. The process of breaking down rocks both mechanically and chemically is a vital through geology and geomorphology. This video discusses how these joints form in rocks and their variations.

It would be really great if you could have another go at this video. I really enjoyed the content, and your descriptions are fantastic, but it would have been nice to have some actual pictures of the different types of joints as you explained them. Maybe you can answer my specific question. I drive through a canyon daily, that was blasted with dynamite not remove the area needed to place the road. There are lots of remains of the drilling holes that were used to place the blasts. There are, how’re several different joints that have been revealed and I want a way to describe them. A good chunk of the rock is granite, has a very uneven jointing, and the face itself is quite jagged. In some places, some dikes have pressed another igneous rock separating the granite. The fracture between the granite and the intrusion is mostly straight. There is one rock in the canyon that is not granite, darker in colour, much finer crystals, and its joint pattern is almost cubic. It has very flat face, not perfectly smooth, but from the car it looks perfectly flat. Also, that same rock has very straight fracture lines both horizontal and vertical.

Hi, is it possible the granite blocks that are used to build the pyramids in egypt originated from granite mountains that have had joint system or other types of geologic joints, rather the granite were cut. The limestone blocks at the base of the pyramids might be obtained from sheet joint or beddings too.

I assume the natural joints were used or identified as a location to break or cut the granite blocks away from the original or parent rock face. Otherwise the granite blocks would be all different shapes and sizes and making them into usable building blocks is difficult without modern equipment

dude instead of drawing examples, youre using powerpoint are you not so maybe.... include photos instead? its really hard to visualize with the way you explain and some of the drawings are cohesive but not all....
