HOW I USE MY BACKSTAY IN SAIL TRIM - SwT 45 SAIL TRIM RIGGING and daily sailing life

In this video, I'm sharing with you my love for backstay tensioner. I'm not an expert but trying to explain how I believe this works for me on my Yacht without claiming to have the blueprint. I'm again only touching the surface of sail trim as it will be more detailed in-depth videos in the future when I have more recordings to show you. I also had a rig inspection and found a few minor things that need to be addressed, and also a few things I knew about. Might be I'm taking the mast off after the Easter holiday here and do some refitting and upgrades as well. If so this will be in future episodes as well.
It's been a busy week and I'm also sharing a few things from my daily life and what I do.
Thank you for watching and hope you enjoy this video!
You can also follow sailing with Thomas on other platforms for almost daily updated pics and videos:

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm trying to sail around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

You are one of the few with an accent that I can understand and actually talk about sailing. I look forward to your videos theircreally great man, you not only talk about your everyday life on a sailboat but you add the why. Even as simple as painting your outboard cover. The average viewer might not understand how often those get stolen. Atlanta i have but one thumbs-up and subscription to give.

Hi Thomas, nice to know I am not the only person who likes to trim his backstay. Your explenaition on the effects is correct, also when to do what is correct. However, if you would like to know what you are really trimming, it is your leech.... I'll try to keep this really simple and short: By reducing the distance between the top of your mast and the end of your boom you are reducing the tension on your leech. Doing so will allow your leech to "open" for the wind to escape, resulting in the effects you named. Doing the opposite, will increase the tension on your leech and force it inwards increasing the curve in your sail. It works like the trailing edge devices on an airplane wing (flaps). You can get the same results or increase your results by opening your mainsheet and trimming your traveler to lee. Allowing your boom to rise up, decreasing the distance between your mast top and end of boom and controlling the angle of the sail by the traveler. You can almost reduce your sails power to zero doing this. If you combine this all together (try it in stable and safe wind conditions), you can take so much power out of your mailsail, that most of the times even in a squall you might not have to reef at all. I blew some minds doing this on passage from Martinique to Bequia (on an underpowered Lagoon 40) in 2019. Sailing upwind in 40 to 45 knots with full sails without any reefing. And no, that is not a good idea, I just wanted to proof to my skipper, how much you can to with trim. And yes, if we would have reefed, we would have been faster. Just saying. If you are interested in more details, let me know and we will find a way I can give you more infos on my wierd trimming ideas (originating from sailing small boots on lakes competetively when I was young). Stay safe out there and enjoy. Dirk

So far THIS is the BEST sailing channel for me on KZread! THANKS THOMAS! (BTW my brothers name is Thomas and it was my grandfathers name too!) Anyway, WHY do I like this channel so much? Probably because he reminds me of how I intend to sail! I am 55 so I am a little older but I am within a couple of years of having my boat and like T I also think BIGGER IS BETTER when it comes to solo sailing and like T I am single now but if like him I meet a lady in my adventures then that will be great too! Anyway, I am looking at boats between 45 and 65 feet and this 55 is AMAZING! I have found a few for sale just like it at reasonable prices and about as HALF as much as similar sized Cats. I would consider an aluminum cat with daggar boards the one on Sailing on Jupiter channel as that is a 10 knot boat but i just prefer a mono. One advantage of the Cat is its shallow draft with boards up. Well Thomas I am sure we will be fast friends if our paths ever cross and until then my friend be safe and BE FREE!

Back in 2019 I was boat sitting Britican, an Oyster 56 with a hydraulic backstay. At some point I was polishing all the metal in the cockpit, including the hydraulic controle panel. Without noticing I released the tention on the backstay. Later that night, around 2am I woke up because the furled up Genoa was flapping wildly. I couldn't understand why, until the next morning when I figured out my mistake.

Hi Thomas. Love your videos. I'm learning a lot. I have a question; I understand how tightening the backstay, in turn tightens the forestay, but, based on your graphic I don't understand how it bends the mast. Surely this is only possible on a fractional rig, or maybe a mast with forward swept shrouds? Otherwise there's nothing to act as the fulcrum for the leverage.

In the old sagas it’s written about Vikings and even in Egils saga - Chapter 32 Egil Skallagrimsson uses the word Viking to describe an action of a group, as in, to go Viking. So by this definition, they would-be pirates. The word Viking have evolved over thousands of years, and kind of been polished. It’s even from Latin history describing the Vikings in Latin words generalising the Vikings as the pirates from Scandinavia. There where no borders at that time and mostly clans joining on raids together. Not all Norseman Swede or Danes where pirates, but in their clans they had the seafarers that went on raids coming from the Vik or Fjord going Viking. Old carving in rune language also describes the longship with the seafarers going on Viking raid... aka Pirates I lived only a kilometre away from one of the most famous Viking graves containing the ship Saga Oseberg. Ever since a child been fascinated about the old sagas and Viking history. Some of the oldest navigation aids in my hometowns coastline is even mentioned in the Snorre Saga, and is still in use. It’s called Tønsberg Tønne Cheers 🍻
