How much does it cost to re-rig a sailboat? - SwT 55 FULL RIG REFIT part II

In this episode How much does it cost to re-rig a sailboat? I take you with me as we are stepping the mast back on BE FREE. I'm also sharing the full refit cost at the end of this video and even for a 35 feet and a 45 feet Bavaria to compare with my 55 feet Bavaria. The mast is back on but the downlight project in the mast is waiting for the lamps. The entire cost of the mast light project will be shared in the next episode, including wiring.
Thank you for watching and hope you enjoy this video!

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm trying to sail around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

    Thank you 🙏🏻 Im happy you find my videos useful. I love to see more people sailing however it’s important to understand the cost and the reality. Especially if someone planning to become a live aboard and do long distance sailing. My opinion bigger is better but safety triumphs it all. So better adjust to affordable size that can be safe and well maintained. Thank you for watching and being here! Cheers 🍻

    Not an outrageous price for a boat that size. We got close to that on a 33 foot boat, but that included sandblasting the mast, boom and spinnaker pole back to bare metal for inspection. The repaint wasn't cheap, but it was worth it.

    Keep seeing these exponential cost curves but still think I could make a big boat work. We will live-aboard in the med 6 months of the year for foreseeable future - need space for 4 grown children and friends to join us. My wife thinks I need help to talk me out of buying a comparatively low cost (up front) 1990 60ft German Frers. Needs re-rigging, teak deck fixed (some water damage to main bulkhead) but otherwise decently refitted over last 5 years. I need to love a boat to do the work on it. Am I doomed?

  • @SailingwithThomas

    @SailingwithThomas

    2 жыл бұрын

    Your definitely not doomed however the curves in running costs are for real. A 60 feet will double in running costs compared to a 55. That said for partly livaboard you have less use and wear and tear. My opinion bigger is better and also to me it was important not to feel like I’m camping. Nothing wrong with that but for years I find it to uncomfortable and enjoy space. So for having guests and family onboard you definitely want space. Guess that’s the main reason so many choose a catamaran over sailing performance. My experience is rather go sailing than having an upper fixer. It will be plenty to fix anyway. To many I know never leaves the marina seeing the adventure they dreamt of because buying to big with to many projects. Some modern 50 foot yachts have more space than an older 65 and clever solution to utilise the space even more. End of the day it’s what suits you and what you want. All the best and good luck in your exciting journey ahead. Cheers 🍻
