THIS IS INSANE! 17,5 kWh Lithium - SwT 126 - FIXING MY PROBLEMS AFTER THE LIGHTNING STRIKE

3 Weeks of hard work here in Shelter Bay Marina in Panama sorting out my electrical problems and even upgrading my power storage to 17,5 kwh. If this is a new world record for express refit upgrades and rebuilds after a lightning strike I don't know. But being in Panama things takes time and to have all this done by myself this fast with everything I needed is more than I ever could dream about. It feels like a miracle that something bigger than me is taking good care of me. Still, a few things to sort out, and my radar system is still not back up and running. Nevertheless, I'm really thankful and happy to have come this far in such a short time. If you wonder why I have been so quiet on all platforms lately, this is the reason. Staying in a marina is expensive and just had to be hard in prioritizing my time and energy. This is not a how-to video but more about sharing my way of thinking and problem-solving. Also not in detail wiring but focusing on the challenges I faced when planning and proceeding with my upgrade.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING AND SUBSCRIBING!

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I`m sailing around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 4 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

I read a blog from Patrick on Brickhouse that if one grounds the mast to a major part of the hull that is underwater, such as the rudder or drive shaft support or sail drive, then lightning tends to find another place to strike. The ground wire would have to be at least #10 or #8 to keep the resistance down. For composite masts, the ground would have to go up to the top and then terminate on a lightning rod. The idea is that the ground will drain any charge on the yacht and that will lessen the attraction of the lightning bolt. It will, instead, seek other targets that can build up a charge. Just to be safe, in case of a strike, I would use #3 or #4 and hope the ground is enough so that the voltage spike will not fry the electronics.

Hello Thomas, there is a enginering principle named KISS (keep it simple, stupid), wait im not insulting you 😁, is like that. Im elecrical engineer and I see you complicate a little bit your installation, it is good but complicated. As I can see is better if you transform all the AC voltage in (AC in and 220v generator inverter) into 24 volts, and after batteries you can transform in the voltages you need for house, thrusters, etc. This will allow you to use it in different world countries with 220v or 110v. Another advice is to keep all the batteries close each other and close to the charging point. Sorry for my English, and sorry to criticized your hard work, my intention is to give you a second point of view.

I have a design for 4 alternators at 200 amps each which are installed on the top of the engine. They have a belt drive with a pulley system that turns the alternators at 10,000 rpm with the engine turning 1200 rpm. If the throttle is advanced beyond that, then the drive clutch disengages and only the engine alternator works. Total power output is about 11KW from the 4 alternators. With that much power, one would need to turn on the water-maker, hot water heater, electric kettle, and perhaps the washing machine, along with a lot of batteries charging very quickly. I have not built the system yet but it might work well at 700 engine rpm giving about 5800 rpm on the alternators so long as the engine has enough power to generate about 17 HP at 700 RPM. The other option is to use only 2 of the alternators when modest power is required which would require about 8.5 HP.

right now having those new lithium batteries in Daisy chain is okay. once you add another inverter to handle Stove oven and draw more amps you will need to change the daisy chain to each battery to a busbar to keep you C rating lower so you do not damage your batteries(lower their life in cycles). having .5C or less at max discharge/charge is where you want to be. Every amp goes through each battery in a daisy chain, not good. Right now you have 2500 watts per battery and 2000 watts can be used which is still .8C a bit high but doable. having each battery to a busbar would lower that to .12C. Talk to your friend about this and he will agree. Again plan to switch this or cut the life of those batteries in half and maybe even your BMS on each unit will not have enough output to deliver 4000 watts of power down the road. I spent a lot of time when I built my system and I use .18C at 10,000 watts of load. So I will still get my 6000 cycles of life maybe even a bit more since I only use 90% of my 60kw system.

You may want to look at installing transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS) on your positive bus bars or your outputs from the bus bar to the important bits. they're pricey (about 250 a piece) but it's still cheaper than losing an inverter or generator control board.

Excellent description of how complicated a modern boat can be and how it is up to the owner to either learn how it all works and how to maintain it, or to be prepared to pay a lot of money for someone else to repair it. Like everything modern, all the advances in electronics makes everything much more complicated and not everything is necessary. Just like a car, power windows, mirrors, and seats aren't necessary but they are nice to have but they are also adding complications and more things to fail some day. Just like life, eh? Great video as always!

Hi, Thomas! I am going to watch this, again and again, as there is so much helpful information, here! Thank you for sharing this with us! My boat has a very basic electrical system, but even so, it has always been daunting to me as I know so little about the electrical side of things. You've given me courage to push myself, to break through the barrier I've created in my mind over fear of how complicated electrical systems are. You've also motivated me to get working on my own set of boat projects, which hopefully, I'll get to do soon when the weather improves where I live! Fair winds and thank you so much, again! ~ Chelle

Nice work! If there is a weakness in your design, it looks like it will be whether you have enough solar to prevent needing your generator. I have only seen one yacht with more battery power than you have. It was a big catamaran with a Tesla battery. Solar panels require a lot of area so you might want to think about making your dodger roof out of solar panels if you need more solar.

I'm sure sacrificing the cabinet was hard to do, but I suspect you gained some more storage where a lot of the old batteries used to be? Hopefully the ergonomics of your home don't suffer too much. :) Looking forward to the future updates on your system! Cheers!

I do love that you finally went lithium and Victron components. Those busbars will cost a bit. Check around with metal shops down there and have some made. looks like 2 at 2.5 feet long for positive and negative sides. you will have to make new cables and positive ones need to be same length and Negative needs to be same length but Pos and neg do not need same length as each other. I hope this helps.

There are good reasons to have more than one form of thrust and power generation, particularly if you have to motor for a day to find or avoid weather the power capacity of batteries unfortunately not at that level as yet. Also sailing you are a giant lightning ⚡️ rod and reliance on purely electronic/electric motive power could be an issue
