PROBLEMS AFTER SAILING 2000 MILES NON STOP - SwT 21

Thank you for watching!
In this episode, you can see the troubles we had to get into Martinique after fighting the waves and currents "the wrong way" for 15 days. We sailed probably more than 2000 Nautical miles nonstop from Panama to Martinique through the whole Caribbean sea, after the Panama Canal was closed due to COVID. Being stuck in Panama for one more season was not tempting, and with the hurricane season getting closer it was time to leave if we should not be trapped for another season south of 10 degrees north. For us, it seems more reasonable to sail back home to Europe until the world gets back to normal again. So in this episode, we start our crazy long journey of 7-8000 Nautical miles back home to Europe. And it was not without problems and challenges. Shelley comes back on board after being denied at the airport in Panama, in her attempt to fly back home to Holland.
When we arrived Martinique we where denied access to due to new french rules excluding boats sailing with Norwegian flag! Martinique is considered as part of Europe in terms of being french and following french regulations and the EU. So why was a Norwegian flagged boat suddenly considered as not part of Europe anymore?

Just found your channel, love it. The problem with France and why they have closed to Norwegian boats stems from the facet that Norway has no virus plan enforced, people are free to move about as they please, the fact that they have NO OR NEXT TO NO INFECTIONS IN THEIR COUNTRY means nothing. Great to see you met Rick from Sophisticated Lady, i've been following them for 6 years now. Stay safe! CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.

Hello, what a shame to hear these words about your time in Panama. The Canal is not closed, it is restricting the traffic to smaller vessels (sail & yacht too) and due to the pandemic, the airports for travel are closed until further notice, too bad they could not buy some parts but this is all a chain of businesses that are closed (only supermarket, pharmacy and cargo company are still open to public). The best way to get these parts was to buy them through a mail box, since cargo flights are authorized. We hope that everything is normalized soon to serve the large community of sailors that pass through Panama every year, next time I can help you in whatever way I can.Good luck.

I don’t remember if it’s clear in this vid but we where granted permission to come in before setting sail. Just hours before arriving French authorities had changed their rules but also made a mistake. Anyway it all ended good. It was for sure crazy times I don’t want to repeat

Again, always positive even in the face of paper and law beuarocracy. Even more so, this Shelly girl is hot and gorgeous, not to mention smart, witty, and with a great smile. Would be nice if Thomas made a video of his background as to sailing experience, previous boats and journeys, income and jobs, and how you learned to fix and change so many things. Also, why did you pick this brand and size boat vs other equal size production boats. It’s obvious you have a racing history behind you as you make it fly without a lot of effort compared to other video makers that barely crawl in the water even when having perfect and great wind/direction

Thank you so much for your kind words! Shelly is for sure a very intelligent young girl and even prettier personality. I prefer smart friends onboard and in this case my friend is female and a very good sailor. I don’t think a full video of my history would be that interesting. I’m very blessed to have grown up with the ocean at my doorstep and parents with yacht production when I was young. So I guess I could play around and do boat related things when my friends was playing football. Started sailing age 6-7 and loved it ever since. Also holiday sailing every summer and weekends with my family yacht. I was privileged enough to borrow my parents yacht frequently when 16 years old. Been racing on regular base everything from 7 feet to my last race on 70 feet as navigator and tactics. That was a VOR70. I don’t remember how many boats I had but it’s a lot and mostly racing yachts. Also done 10 years as captain in search and rescue, training others also abroad and ended my carrier at the HQ of Norway SAR at sea. I’m just a sailor with a KZread channel nothing special about it. All the best 🍻

How to win friends and influence people? Typical European Union arrogance in a nautical setting the day before arriving after more than a dozen days of passage a country unilaterally changes the classification of what is a European country is to a European Union country. To my friends in the EU there will come a time in your time of need when you look to the countries around you for support, then you shall also suffer the exceptions that you have set the precedence, so short sighted oh and by the way in 2017 Norway became part of the Schengen area. From the Norwegian Government Website, copied and pasted. "Norway participates in key aspects of EU cooperation in the area of justice and home affairs, of which the Schengen cooperation is the most important. 01. Mar 2017 As a Schengen member state, Norway is part of an internal free-travel area with a common external border. Norway applies the common set of Schengen rules in full. These include rules on police cooperation, legal cooperation on criminal cases, visa rules and rules on checks on persons at the outer borders. Norway participates in the European Borders Agency, Frontex, which aims to coordinate the management of the common external borders. Norway is involved in the development of the Schengen acquis at all levels of the EU Council decision-making system, and has the right to speak, but not to vote. Those parts of the EU’s Justice and Home Affairs Council meetings in which Norway and other non-EU states participate are called meetings of the Mixed Committee.

In my opinion the French Republic should have had their beaurocracy sorted (but they never do), the problem there is that Martinique doesn’t have a local government Like Antigua, Cayman islands, BVI... which can adapt or not include regs from the UK in Europe. This would have helped Martinique dealing with whats in its region. So since he had departed and filed permit online According to the French regs of the time they should have allowed them to anchor as they could back up their stories and prove (assumed) GPS tracking. Many other country in the Caribbean did so, so long as such documentation/information was available. Copying so called “mother land” when you are thousands of miles away from it on another continent with such different particularities is beyond absurd! They Should have fake a french accent (from France or Martinique) and they would of let them straight in even with a Norwegian flag!
