MODERN NAVIGATION HACKS - SwT 160 - Bonus episode sharing how I use old tools in a new way

Hope you enjoy this short bonus episode where I reveal another modern navigation hack.
Wifi on a sailing boat is so much more than wasting time on social media. It's safety and navigation for some of us. And I love to share the new doors this tech opens for average sailors.
Lots of misunderstandings about AIS and even wrong information are shared online. In this episode, I explain very short about AIS and new modern ways to utilize this powerful tool. There are lots of other opportunities and I have many more hacks to share. What I am sharing in this video is not brand-new tools or tech. But the way I combine this with the new opportunities that are within range for most sailors today could be an eye-opener. I'm not trying to teach you anything, only sharing how I do things. Hopefully, I can contribute to better safety for sailors and even inspire some to. I love the options I now have to use Marin Traffic while sailing because of StarLink. It's basically a game-changer in so many ways. I strongly recommend sailors to not only receive but also broadcast AIS. Especially for those who wanna go blue water sailing. Some nations like Indonesia will not let you into their country without an MMSI number and a working AIS. Some nations with a reporting regime towards pleasure boats accept your AIS as a tool giving you the freedom of not needing to check in and report your position. So for long-distance sailors having an AIS is a no-brainer. And also safer.
Thank you so much for tagging along, and for the patrons helping to support making this video possible.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever we have time for it. I used to sail singlehanded and occasionally have sailing friends onboard.
Even though this is season 6 on KZread I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean prior to, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

Thank you for this, Thomas! While, as a coastal sailor, long term traffic forecasts on what is more than 30nm out makes me a bit nervous, I guess it does work out on the high seas as most vessels will be travelling in a rather predictable path. On your call to use AIS, I will add this: my brother is the Master on a coaster that travels the north sea and baltic. He told me in no uncertain terms to get an active (!) AIS and a good radar reflector because with those ships especially at night, you cannot rely on somebody being on a sharp lookout. The crew is too small, there's often just one person on the bridge for six hours at a time and also, they sometimes take shortcuts out of the official seaways. Active AIS has come down in price a lot and, at the same time, availability of electrical power from solar, wind or batteries on sailboats has increased so much that there really isn't a reason to not run with AIS anymore. In addition, an AIS will allow you to send an automated "safety related message" which as far as I understand would be used to alert vessels in the vincinity of the fact that you may be in need of assistance.

Hi Thomas, It should be mentioned that you do not need Starlink to get this extended view if you have PredictWind Pro and the IridiumGo! With PredictWind you get a 300 nm view around your vessel (only twice a day but you can plan for the next 12 hours). God seilas videre ! Jan from Tiramisu

Yup, here in Antwerp area in Belgium AIS is required for any and every vessel. Our boat is still in Finland up the northern most part of the Baltic sea where you hardly hear anyone even on VHF

Great video! The offshore functionality is only available on the newer generation Class B transponders. Not only do they transmit at 5w (vs 2w) they can also transmit your position via satellite. When you setup the AIS you’ll see an option to enable ‘Message 27’. If this isn’t selected you won’t have satellite position monitoring while offshore.

Great video Thomas! We would love to see a bonus video about your safety onboard. We hardly if ever see you wearing a life jacket and lifeline (this is only on video we assume). Also what is your emergency procedure in a worst case scenario, do you have your life-raft , "grab-bag" "epirb" close-by? how do you prepare/train yourself? Keep up the great video's and happy sails!

Great video, always something to learn. With your radar range being about the same as AIS, both systems can detect objects at the same time. Are there situations where the AIS picks up a ship that is not detected by the radar?

Seeing these life-hacks realy helps since most instruction books are far outdated in terms of modern technology. Whats your oppinion on log-books? Still something worth it (besides the insurance reason) or outdated with several gps on board?

Don't you have to pay a yearly subscription to vessel finder or other apps so you can see AIS targets out of range for land based antennas? Usually if you click on a target offshore you get a prompt to add satellite subscriptions.

Ais only let's you see other boats that have it! Most do not have it so you still can run into a boat not on ais! So it's mostly useless! Everyone wants everything to be easy and electronic! Old school ways still work great!

AIS can by no means replace radar or a sharp lookout. But as part of voyage planning it is a great tool. Also it has its advantages. Remember this is not for the regular coastal cruiser. Most long distance sailors have this. You will always find happy go lucky sailors, but this is a minority. As I point out in this episode there is no such thing as a perfect world. Thank you for watching and all the best
