FULL REFIT ALREADY? - SwT 51 Rig refit part 1(NOT A DIY OR HOW TO)

This is NOT a DIY or HOW TO refit rigging video. BE FREE is too big and requires professionals and professional tools for this enormous job replacing everything from top to toe. Only original parts from SELDEN are used in this process and replaced by experienced professionals. My job is just to observe and pay for this. The entire cost will be shared in refitting video part II. Once the mast is down I'm also replacing antennas and instruments. Also replacing old anchor light with updated multi-color/function light. By impulse, it changes from anchor to 3 color or even strobe. And during the weekend not musch is going on so I invited Hanna over for dinner.
I'm only sharing my adventure and the true reality of sailing around the world. BE FREE is nine years now and the hardware is at the end of its lifetime. No matter what brand or type you have rigging should be replaced every 10 years as a minimum. There are lots of myths out there like «My yacht is so strong and good old school build, so it lasts forever!» I'm sorry to break this myth and tell you this is not true. Bronze fittings do not last more than 10 years either, and even though the surface may look nice and shiny it's what you don't see that's the problem. I have not only lost one mast but two times. Both times during race close to shore but rules are the same it only needs more frequent replacements.
You might think I'm crazy to do this on such a new yacht.
So here are my arguments:
As a solo sailor, I need everything to be in top condition for safety and comfort. When rigging is 9 years it's at its end of life time and I have sailed 20K miles. Replacing this in the Pacific would not only be a risky project but most likely more expensive. The next stop would be New Zealand.
Thank you for watching and hope you enjoy this video!

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm trying to sail solo around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

Rigging is probably the one thing that production and more specialised boats have in common. Watch the last episode of sailing Tranquilo and also watch the Sailing Aequus where they talk about the challenges with new production boats. Like you have said many times I'm not either here to impose my opinion and having a boat is always a combination of things. For me what comes first is structural integrity. You do take fantastic care of your boat and it's a good move to do this refit before heading out to Pacific. Fair winds and I'll keep watching your videos.

Thank you for the safety logic in the retrofit with all original parts. You can sail with confidence, knowing that your rig is not a variable in the equation. Seems so logical at such a large, well equipped marina. Have you ever looked at the scale of your equip and relative safety margins compared to the 45? I assume your vessel has added safety margins based on the loads your rigging sees. Another good reason for the larger, safer craft. Big Hanna fan.

Every time before I plug in shore power, I take a multimeter and check the power and frequency. I'm kinda surprised that a 55ft boat is deck stepped, but looking at that rigging tells me that it is very sea worthy. That refit must off cost a small fortune. Friends off mine went to the same guy, with a problem with their hydraulic backstay. Within a day they resolved the problem. I guess your Insurance will go down with the new rig. Fair winds.

Another great episode Thomas! It is very good that you explain that the rig does not last forever. There are so many parts that hold the mast up and often if only one part fails, the mast comes down. And the part only fails when under extreme pressure, not sitting in the marina. Yes, I also have lost a mast when a swagged end fitting on the upper shroud broke. The corrosion could not be seen looking at the fittings from the outside, only looking at the break could the corrosion be seen. I replaced all the wire, turnbuckles, and fittings, fortunately the mast wasn't damaged and no one was injured. I think many sailors agree it should be done, but it is expensive (!) so they keep an eye on the rigging and hope to see a problem before the mast goes over the side.

Thomas iv been involved in full refits , mostly in Phuket & what you are doing is very sensible as ten years cruising is so mush more wear & tear then a yacht going out occasionally from a marina . I even recommend checking & changing the For stay after 5/6 years (Frew experience) The strobe is the best light you can have on a dark night in a strong wind (Even though it is actually illegal as a nav light on a yacht) The goose neck is a must to find if the connection to the mast is secure , All rivets or bolts have no movement or corrosion & dont be shy on looking over there shoulders to make sure things are put to on right (Looks very professional there) Up East not so . Fair winds my friend . (I used to sail a 68 Ft. ketch single handed , Just think ahead )

Would you cross the Atlantic with that? I know you have jerry cans but have you used them? I know you have to be patient if you're fuel limited but is it wise to cross an ocean with so little? My engine is a 75hp Yanmar.

  • @SailingwithThomas

    @SailingwithThomas

    3 жыл бұрын

Thank you 🙏🏻 I will cover the entire cost in episode 52 or 53. Depending on when it’s all done. When I crossed the Atlantic I carried enough diesel for 2/3 of the distance. I will do the same for the Pacific. I only used around 200 Liters on Atlantic. We motor the last 24 hours as the wind disappeared and we where on a schedule for my friends flight. Also used the generator a lot for making water and cocking. My arguments for carrying so much diesel is if mast comes down or some other issues I should make it to shore. Depending on your consumption it’s impossible for me to say what’s correct. Diesel last long time and if not used on a passage you could use it or sell it later

Are things opening up at all for sailing in the Caribbean?

It’s really not that easy yet. Some simplified entry rules for vaccinated travelers are starting to appear. However French islands still have closed borders here and also in the Pacific.

With food and a woman looking that good. You should start a cooking channel and a how to pick up women channel. 😆

Ha ha Thank you I guess 🤣 I don’t think it would be a very successful channel though as I’m a solo sailor and not a chef 🤣 And I really suck at picking up women and Hanna is just a friend. Hanna for sure is good looking and could do it but she doesn’t have a KZread.
