I used to scoff at hand loaders getting 'scientific' about every aspect of creating a perfect round for a particular rifle. Until i got scientific and started getting 3/4 " groups at 200 yds. I shoot some bow as well and this presentation is a wealth of information. This young guy is a great and natural teacher. Excellent vid.

Hi Jack …This was the best toutorial of setting up your bow that I have seen . Forget my age I’m the senior citizen of my friends down here . Yes , before you were born I had the pleasure of shooting with Howard Hill.. purely instinctive and a world class archer shooting three fingers under in the fifties.. I think if if I were to come out of retirement I could beat all the best who come to Lancaster archery each year.. In the seventies I took up the compound reluctantly shooting thousands of arrows and having the archery shop backing me up . This was a mistake. I should have set up my bow as you articulated just now . Very professional in your presentation..Being a retired pro photographer for over 50 years I’ll give you a 99% for your effort .. I’m still at a loss with your cam setup .. You must give us another video again at a later date . The 1% I’ll give to you if you use a contrasting stylus when your in the macro mode up close and personal to your delegated points of interest. Lastly on your paper tuning .. If I’d had known your setup approach I would never have lost a match .. Nicely 👍 done..I couldn’t take my eyes off your pink rocking horse..Yes ,, you are a great dad ..Oh!! One last thing..need your help .. Yes I harvested 2 🦌 deer here in Massachusetts last year with max distance of 30 yards in my blind . I'm 45 years old, hunted my entire life but never with a bow. I just got a new bow last week and this is the most informative video I have watched yet. I don't think my bow was set up right from the shop I bought it from. The very first shot I took I saw a wag in the arrow. I'm new to archery so I thought it was my form, so I kept shooting and every dang one did it, I was hitting a golf ball size target every time so I think my form and consistency is spot on. I have some adjusting to do. I used to shoot 500 yards target practice with a rifle and now I'm shooting 6' with a bow lmfao. Thanks for sharing your knowledge it's going to help me out on this new to me hunting style.

I know some people do what's called torque tuning. It's not recommended unless if you can adjust your rest in small increments though. What it is in short is if you torque the bow a little to the right or to the left, a torque tuned bow will have the most forgiveness out of it. It obviously won't be dead center, but the goal is to try to go from large groups (let's say it's 5 inches from the center ) to a smaller group (let's say 1 inch from the center). Some people like shooting 3 arrows and measuring distance from the arrow shot from when the bow was level, to the shots fired when the bow was not level. The way people adjust it is by moving your rest backwards and forwards. I'm not trying to suggest trying to torque tune, but if someone does and they get a little off level, it won't hurt as much if they lose a shot on a deer or if they go in the red or the blue on target faces. Hope this helps a little bit for those who want max forgiveness!

The 23 on the alu arrow is 23/64 of an inch. 0.015" thick wall Dont forget the Alu/Carbon composite arrows from Easton :-) Mathews SoloCam and single cam bow shooters have no worries with cam timing. Re tuning rest and sight. I paper tune, bare and fletched mainly for height. I dont spend too long paper tuning. For left/right alignment, I prefer walk back tuning/french tuning

First I will say good job.... when checking the axle to axle length for manufactures spec... I shoot an energy 35 as well fantastic bow... my bow is 70 I shoot at 62... but to check the spec do I have to set my bow at 70b to check the measurement. Tks

Aja heres a solution to paper tuning, buy a roll of the brown packing paper, some people use parchment or like a deli style paper. Get a few feet of .25 or so diameter rope and run it through the paper and tie knot so the roll can hung from the ceiling, rafter, whatever. I then unrolled a couple feet of the paper and used a piece of all thread at the bottom with two clamps at each corner of the paper and it held nice and tight and wasnt easily moved. When your done you unclamp whatever is holding it tight and roll it up. Worked awesome

Great information and just in time. I've missed a shot on deer this passed season do to arrows doing weird stuff during flight. I decided to change things up during off season and find out where theses issues are coming from. I know my bow is tuned correctly, so I'm purchasing better quality arrows and different weights of field points to find a nice consistency that will bring out the best accuracy. Thanks for the time you share with us.

If you started the bow tuning with the nock level (90 deg to the string) and through the berger hole(s), and the tear is nock high, you need to check that the cams are rotating in sync, and stopping simultaneously (either against their respective cables or limbs). You also want to check that your string stop isn't pushing the string away from the riser at a weird angle. You never want to move your nocking point down in this situation; the nocking point should never be below the arrow rest.

Through experience, networking with people in person, who knew more than we did...... And it sounds like we were doing it more ethically 20 years ago then today..... Shoot 700 arrows a week.... Estimate range without a rangefinder, and truly love the sport.

with GT Hunters XT/Pros and Velocity XT/Pros, if you look on the inside of the shaft with a flashlite, you will see the 'seam', a ridge .. I align the nock where that seam is and fletch cock vane up along that seam ... same as nock tuning ..... I get great FP and BH flight doing it that way

Remember, if you're using a release aid, the arrow is going to be flexing vertically, so if you're spine indexing your arrows, I suggest you mark that end that is stiff and put the cock vane on that end so that way they react the same. Same applies with placement on recurves or longbows or if you're shooting with fingers, instead of vertically flexing however, your arrow is going to flex horizontally (so it can get around the riser).

Thank you so much for these videos. I love your candid presentation style. This is probably a pretty silly question, but I'm going to ask anyway. I am assuming that you nock tune 'all' of the arrows to get them flying as well as possible before moving your rest, correct? As opposed to nock tuning arrow number 1 to it's best possible tear and if not a bullet hole, start moving the rest. Then starting over on arrow 2 and so on.

Correct. Leave bow to spec. Nock tune all arrows so they fly exactly like EACH OTHER. Then, move rest to get bullet hole.

Make sure to use spine charts and make sure you have the right spine! Spine is tested at a 28 inch arrow length (throat of nock, the point that the nock connects to serving, to end of carbon/aluminum).

Great video in every aspect but quick beginner question. How do you determine which arrow to use for paper/bare shaft tuning? For example if I have a dozens arrows and arrows 1-6 constantly shoot nock high right and arrows 7-12 shoot nock low left which should be used for the tuning process? Wouldn’t the rest movement only be able to fix one of those two issues?

Nock tune, nock tune, nock tune...That will get all the arrows to react the same to each other. Eliminating this issue!

Am sorry for too many question and appreciate your info. Am new to compound archery, been shooting trad bow and can get away with weaker spine. My current arrows are carbon express maxima 250( really just their 400 spine) arrow cut to 28.5 11 grain insert and 145 grain point on the 56-58 pound at 27 inch. Is that good arrow set for my bow? I know my bow can go up to 64 pound if I crank the bolt down can I still use the same set of arrows may be just cut another 1.25 inch and use the same tip weight or slightly heavier broad head for hunting since the arrow themselves are very light 8.11 gpi. Also I just want to hunt some boar or wild pigs since I don’t wanna try deer or bear.

When you say your bow needs to be in speck exactly then you said approximately..... So does it.need to be exact with ata or.BH?

Dude you are way off about how aluminum arrows are made. They start out as a very long coil of aluminum strip. They are rolled into tubes on a tube mill, just like any basic piece of pipe. The arrow shafts actually have a weld seam. The seam is basically undetectable after the shafts are drawn down to size. It's a pretty cool process. Easton has a few KZread videos about it. You should watch them.

Thank you for this. Building a little DIY bow shop this summer to start doing my own stuff. More of this tuning process and bow set up process (D-loop installation, serving in a peep, fixing cam lean, twisting cables for peep rotation and timing issues, etc.) would be cool to see! Thanks again!

I'm nowhere near consistent enough to really need to tune my arrows more than maybe re sighting in and adding or taking a few lbs draw to tighten groups. Some day maybe... I get the .003 black eagle carnivores and stay in a 6" circle at 50. I will take that with a 350$ quest radical

1 reason I love to bare shaft tune is just to work on my form especially after I’ve got all my spines aligned

I bought Easton bloodline fletched shafts.. They are all nock indexed the same however some fly realy good and then some look like they have spine issues.. This leads me to believe that the crest does NOT mean the aligning of the nock with the crest will make them all fly the same.. I think each shaft has to be individually indexed.. What do you think?

Since most inserts weight less than 15 grains: Yes. They're assuming you're using their stock insert and adding the appropriate point weight for the spine.

Nock high and my arrow already looks lower than 90 on my string… hoyt vtm . Any suggestions?

This may be to picky, but after you have your nock tune mark when you go to fletch the arrow, do you put the back end of the vane on the mark or do you put the middle of your vane on the mark if your putting a 2 or 3 degree offset or helical.

Awesome video! I’m Shooting gold tip pierce platinum 250 cut to 28 1/4. 28 in draw shooting 68-70 lbs. bow maxes at 70 but I think it’s a little shy. I nocked tuned them and got a good consistent bullet hole with all 6 arrows. I fletched one arrow and shot it through paper and I’m getting a low right tear but still getting bullet holes with bare shaft. What’s going on?? What do I do?

Hi, nice video. Why is it that you say when nock tuning fletched arrows (3 fletch in my case) I don’t have 90 degrees? I can still turn the nock every 45 degrees 8 times to come to the full 360 to check the paper tear each time I turn the nock right? I have a QAD drop away rest. Are you saying that one of the vanes that is not the cock vane will come in contact with either the raiser or the arrow rest no matter what? Thank you.

I’ve been struggling tuning my bow for a while. My bow shop is pretty quick to get me in and out of the shop, and It’s been pretty much up to me to figure everything out. I believe I have narrowed my left tears down to my arrows which I believe are over spined for my set up. I’m using a Mathews V3, 70#, 29.5 draw. Arrows are victory RIP TKO 250 spine cut to 28.5. I’m considering purchasing some RIP TKOs cut to 31”, but I hate to keep spending money on arrows. Any thoughts? I just took the bow in last week to verify it’s in tune.

Deepest part of nock to back if point. That includes insert.

Only problem is you better not blink or you’ll miss something.LOL .QUESTION .I am beyond the vertical bow stage now and devote my time to my crossbow. Once we come out of this virus 🦠, my buddy and I will continue to work on my 710 gr FOC shafts . It’ll be @ 27%..At 20” using carbon shafts with moon 🌙 nocks do you agree that still above 300fps I have to be concerned with accuracy at less than 30 yards from my blind 🦌 deer hunting? Any help will be greatly appreciated .TU Hopefully it will not necessitate arrow rotation.

The tuning of crossbow bolts is almost nonexistent as they're a totally different animal. A 200/300 spine crossbow bolt at 20" is stupid stiff. Way above the marked 200/300 spine. Doing a nock tune is completely unnecessary. They're designed to point and shoot!

@@Bobb1julie I can relate to your comment on shooting 4 deer in 3 years. I remember back in the '80s I was bragging to a friend I had just met that I had killed 6 deer. Turned out that he had already killed 29 deer at the time. Now, all these years later I've killed over 100 deer and I look back and feel silly for my bravado back then. Hang in there. You're living in a great era to be successful killing deer.

Hi 👋 Russel ..I too have eclipsed the 💯 deer 🦌 plateau..This represents over 50 years in the field.What great memories we have . Waiting ‘til next fall is very taxing on my patience. In 2017 just at dusk I harvested my largest buck 8pt/230# at 16 yds . The point is in less than 10 sec I was looking elsewhere,slowly moved my head and there he was . @@Bobb1julie Hello Robert. Congratulations on a great buck. I'm guessing you and I are close in age...I'm 60 and have been bowhunting for 42 years...55 years altogether. Just think how many deer you and I could have killed if we had today's technology back when we started. The young guys don't know the challenges that we grew up with. Of course, I also took about 10 years away from my own hunting to concentrate on my daughter being successful. For me, it's been much more rewarding to be sitting in a tree with her and watching her shoot deer. Now I have the privilege of getting my grandson into the treestand. He'll be 10 this year and I'm setting him up with a crossbow. He's too small to shoot a compound that's powerful enough to kill a deer, but boy, he is so excited to get out there this year. Hey Nate are Easton FMJ’s spine aligned? The aluminum sleeve is seamless,So does that mean it tunes more simple like a aluminum only arrow? Or do you still have to take the carbon core into account? Especially when it comes to DIY fletching . I know victory has to be precise

@@averagejackarchery if you buy a half dozen pre fletched do I mark where the cock vane originally was when applying new fletchings? From the factory they are in different spots.For example one of the arrows the cock vane is on top with the Easton fmj logo parallel to me.

Sir; I'm shooting 60 lbs with a 28.5 draw length and a 28 inch shift. My arrows are 340 spine, I'd like to shoot a 125 grain broadleaf with 75 grain inserts. Do you believe this will work? Greatly Appreciated. Thank you.

You're going to be pushing the limits of dynamic spine...but it might be okay! Have to shoot it and see before you buy 300s.

Just bought a VXR 60 pounds 28 1/2 draw carbon express 250 spine Papertown very well now if I switch to 65 pound mod and 350 spine Do I have to paper tune it again

I would definitely shoot it through paper to confirm. You might be surprised like I was that there won't be any change, but it takes seconds to find out.

Man, you have some EXCELLENT INFORMATION, and you really put a lot out there. Much more than other channels in my opinion. But you gotta pause once in awhile and let people take in what you're saying. Your editing cuts are actually speeding up the video....which is good for info...but the whole video sounds like a run on sentence.

Dude I bought a bear archery adept compound bow and boy did I open a can of worms I'm pulling my hair out with what arrow to get the vain the length the grain the diameter its back in the box put it that way.

Why not? Most archers really want the best arrow flight they can get. Why buy all the expensive equipment and then not check out each shaft to the best of your ability. Some great information here folks. You might want to pay him some attention. Besides, everyone likes to watch great arrow flight wether we hit the mark or not lol.

Wait. Is nock tuning just finding spine alignment? Because if that's the case my victory arrows come spine aligned.

They sort of do. I've shot victory for nearly two decades, and have found the alignment to be about 70-80% consistent. It also is just the static spine, not dynamic, which is what we're trying to find for our bow and setup when we bareshaft nock tune. Dynamic spine is impossible to truly known until one shoots the arrow.

I am! Left handed but right eye dominant. So right handed shooting it is! Can't do anything else right handed though except work the stick shift in my car. 🤷

"Nock tuning" with a spine tester would probably work in place of nock tuning with the bow wouldn't it?

It will help have a consistent starting point but there's no guarantee that having the spine up (usually the way they people tend to fletch them) is the best for your setup. It should save you some time (in theory they would tend to flex the same respective of their spines) and get you close if you don't want to bother with bareshaft nock tuning though. I'd still nock tune your fletched arrows since it's only got 3(or 4) places you can rotate to anyways.

Yes. Arrow rests on compound bows are set behind the bow shelf, which is usually 1.5-2" shorter than the draw length. So it's not uncommon for compound shooters to shoot shorter than actual draw length arrows.

@@truthsayer81 Yes. I like to have the broadhead at least an inch away so I cut my hunting arrows to 31" for my 30" draw.

Average Jack Archery I’m shooting 70# 340 spine power flights at 29inches long with a 28.5 inch draw length. I’ve always wanted to try heavier field points (currently using 100gr, want to try 125) but the spine won’t allow it, I think I might get away with it if I can take 1.5 inches of the shaft length

I have a 30-30.5 draw. My usual arrow length for my non 3D arrows is 31".

no worries about shooting downhill for me im always sitting down (wheelchair) lol

Can I paper tune my arrows with the fletching on I really don’t feel like taking my fletching off

Yup! Just like I say in the video the tuning method is exactly the same for a fletched or unfletched shaft. Easily done with either style.
