EPISODE 4-How to not suck at archery- Walk Back Tuning

Спорт

In this episode we get closer to having perfect arrow flight. Walk back tuning is a simple way for anyone to see how their arrows are flying. If you cant shoot the tape, use your overall group size based on where the arrows are landing and adjust the entire group.

Thank you for sharing I am Forrest Earnest. You already know my current bow and arrow set up from last fall. I shot it again and am shooting far left and down from my aim point. I have two almost touching and a flier. Sometimes I feel like I'm shooting with a rifle with a scope that's knocked off, but in bow form. I'm horribly inconsistent. I believe I need a new sight that is truly lefthanded and not ambidextrous. I am at the edge of my sight housing adjustment both vertically and horizontally. I am hoping to get my set up dialed in so that I can use it for turkey hunting this spring. West Virginia's season runs a month starting on April 19th.

I just did my first tune on a Mathews with the top hat system (2020 TRX36). Bare shaft through paper, followed by bare shaft on targets compared to fletched. Then a quick & dirty walk-back. Fist-sized groups bare/fletched at 40y!?! Surprisingly quick/easy to tune. Then did something a little out of the box by setting up a sight tape for Superdrive 23’s, and a second for Easton 6.5 Hunter classics. No changes to the rest, or knocking point whatsoever. The 6.5’s sight just a hair knock high, but shot just fine. I figured it would be a good idea for when I want a ‘casual day’ and do a walk through the outdoor 3D course with feinds, and not sling $20 arrows around. Really please with myself, and appreciated the vids walking me through it all.

Dillon: This might help you and I hope its not too confusing.... My apologies for the lengthy con-vab.... :) Step #1: make sure your rest's center shot is on i.e. your rest is square and level, correct measurement from the riser, etc. very important! In some cases, you can step back and eye ball your center shot by looking at the string, following the string down from the top limb, through the handle, through the rest, and see if the arrow is right behind the string or centered. Certainly not ideal, but you can see if your arrow is kicking left or right, in a pinch! Once you have confirmed your center shot is on, leave the rest alone at this point; you wont be adjusting the rest until you start to paper tune fletched arrows. Step #2: Finding the spine of each arrow? Simply nock an arrow and shoot it through paper about 3/4 ft away from the paper or so. Read the paper; it will be obvious! If its not a bullet hole, turn the arrow 1/4" turn, shoot again and see if you have achieved a bullet hole. IF not, repeat by turning the arrow/nock again 1/4" turn and shoot again; continue until you have achieved a bullet hole. IF you achieve a bullet hole or close to it, the orientation of the spine should be on top or up. Mark the arrow's spine and move on to the next arrow. IF the arrow is tearing up, down, left or right, the rest isn't the problem (yet), the arrow is - unless your center shot is off; but hopefully you have validated that in step #1. Step #3: Simply, repeat this adjustment/shooting sequence until you achieve a bullet hole with all arrows. This might take you one shot or possibly 4 shots ... but should achieve what you are looking for... Once you have achieved bareshaft bullet holes, you are now ready to fletch your arrows with the spine pointing up and, with the cock feather in the same configuration. Step #4: Start paper tuning with fletched arrows; now the rest does come into play. Read the tear and move the rest accordingly. There are hundreds of videos on youtube on what a fletched arrow tears are telling you and how to adjust your rest to achieve a bullet hole. **Remember micro adjustments - a little goes a long way in your setup**

I personally do not bare-shaft tune, as you stated it's as much the "meat-sack" as it is the bow. I also try to steer newer archers away from it as well, without a consistent form it's very difficult to do. I watched a newer archer spend 2 weeks chasing a bare-shaft tune only to get frustrated and not come back to shoot for over a month. It kind of sucks to watch happen, when there are others methods they can use to have a tuned bow. I do appreciate the at home methods you are showing for how to check your bow/sight such as 3rd axis, timing (even if that one was a little sketch), and paper tuning.

Fantastic explanation. Walk back tuning is a requirement for every bow I own. Did you confirm the arrow forgiveness from the stiffer spine? I recall hearing the conclusion. From my experience as a target shooter I have found that a slightly week spine is more forgiving out past 40/50 yards. Sidenote: an old school archery guru told me one time the first step to bareshaft tuning is two shots of whiskey to calm your brain and fast twitch muscles down.

I dont think there's significant value in walk back tuning for a hunting rig. I think it's a better idea to paper tune and then check/adjust for identical broadhead and field point P.O.I. Once that is achieved, then use your sight adjustments (2nd axis) to correct for L/R drift. Nudging your rest around is fine if you only shoot one head or the other ALL the time but you are potentially undoing the previous tuning that yielded identical broadhead and feildpoint accuracy. Also, walk back tuning is going to drive some guys crazy because they really need to have their sights set up abssolutely plumb first. If that isn't the case, you end up un-tuning your bow so that your P.O.I. matches a poorly set up sight. If you're going to walk back tune the first step should really be leveling your sight and verifying/adjusting by shooting a hanging string at close range through the full range of vertical sight adjustment. Even with this proper preliminary set up, I think the benefit is still debatable for a hunting set up.

I've read several people state that their best bareshaft tune and broadhead flight does not necessarily correspond to their best walk back tune, and that walk back tuning is not meant to fix arrow flight but rather to align things to the center of the bow. I suppose in theory if everything is right in the middle of the bow, then you should be fine but maybe not in practice. If this is correct, then what do you do if you achieve your walk back tune, but your arrow flight with broadheads has suffered as a result of it? If you fix your broadhead flight then you will ruin your walk back tune. Personally, I'll take good broadhead flight but with field points impacting 1" to the right at 50 yards (farther than I shoot at animals anyway). I don't know because I've always set my rest to center shot and then tuned my yokes to move my string to the proper position. Once I get field points and broadheads hitting to the same POI and with good groups at 40 yards, then my bow is aligned closely enough that if there is a small shift at extreme yardages then I'm not a good enough shot to see a small drift at long yardages. Regarding what you said about bare shafts, they are insanely touchy out of a fast bow at 20 yards and past. I shoot bareshafts through paper at close range and then can just skip to broadhead tuning at 40 yards. I move my string (and sometimes rest) at 40 yards until broadheads and field points hit to the same point. If you grip the bow slightly differently shooting a bareshaft going 300 fps and you are standing at 20 yards, then you can easily make a near perfectly tuned bow shoot a bareshaft 1 foot different in any direction. Half the time when I shoot a bareshaft poorly, it's just because I haven't had enough coffee or am stressed from work etc.

  • @brandonmcdonald6121

We are probably in agreement on this one. For me I will always make sure broadhead flight is where I want it to be before a hunt. This one is more to see if people are having a more extreme problem they can get it a bit more in line. My concern is a lot of guys who’s bubble is off are going to message me... obviously that can mask this issue. I know a lot of guys that get good paper then move straight to broadheads.

  • @MrShysterme

    @MrShysterme

    3 жыл бұрын

@@brandonmcdonald6121 Sounds good. I wonder what the best starting point on average is to then move to broadhead tuning? I've been using my starting point as setting rest to center shot. However, I wonder if setting rest to center shot, walk back tuning, and THEN use that as your starting point for broadhead tuning might be more optimal (?). I think bows with yokes or the new Bowtech or Elite systems might have an advantage here whereas you don't have to move your rest at all (sometimes).....and so starting from center shot rest position often gets you an acceptable result.

And I could not shoot them at the shop the glue needs 24hours to dry before you can put the field point in. Can't wait to shoot them. I hope they are bullets like the Blackeagle. And I shoot 20 yards my bows ata is 32inches. My ibo is 330.

Walk back tuning separates the men from the boys or the contenders from the pretenders. Not given enuff love. If u r hugging that tape @ every distance u r on the way to not hitting the brisket or guts. Those 2 things can ruin a week long hunt out of state & mess with your brain for a year. I'm totally in on Firenock. I bought a kit & caboodle from them with extras on everything. Taking my time cuz there is both a learning curve & break-in period. The key is consistency from arrow to arrow & I didn't want any outliers. Plus the fact that my 300 shafts will have the best of both worlds with more FOC & less nock flex. Still waiting on my Nexus 4 that I hope to have by April. Take care.

Nock pinch, not only D loop. My bow (second hand) has a costum string and the centre serving was tight, real tight. Not sure on thread size, doesnt matter. I re served using finer thread, OH LORDY what a difference.......the only time loose is better......

you might should point out that you get the same error if your third axis is out ...because for a further target you normally aim higher, and if your level / third axis is not correct adjusted, the change in aiming angle (higher) will cause aiming to the left or to the right...hence it is important to use the same pin and the same target all the time respectively don't move the ping pong ball....which means you don't change this aiming angle....

I think it’s a small enough change unless your rig is SUPER wonky it will be ok. What I’m more worried about is people stopping short because they didn’t figure out they can raise the target up a bit. I debated mixing in getting your site set for this one but it was going to be too long...

@@brandonmcdonald6121 lots of archers think that third axis is only important if you shoot up or down a hill, but think about this: with a 350 gr arrow I get approx. 315 fps (3D ...in down under we are not limited to 300 fps) out of my bow....that means that the arrow - despite this good speed - drops over 60 meters by nearly 1,900 mm!... (you can calculate it via the equation [gravity/2]*[distance/speed]^2 ...the actual drop is even more as the arrow slows down due to friction pending on the fletching)....to compensate for this I have to change the aiming angle distinctly for a trajectory that will hit the target at 60 meters, and if my level respectively third axis is not correctly adjusted the position of the bubble will multiply the error: with the third axis out you will tilt your bow slightly to the left or the right (pivot point is your sight pin....hence your arrow sitting approx. 80 mm below gets shifted to the left or to the right!)...might be barely noticeable over 10 ...20 meters...but over 60 it might be easily 50 ..100 mm to the left or the right ...maybe a good topic for Epsiode 5 😀

...and to make it "clear as mud" why the error increases with distance: while the arrow moves slightly to the left or to the right with the sight pin / bubble as the pivot point, it needs to be taken into account that the anchor point - hopefully 😀 - doesn't change; therefore the arrow points now in an angle to the left or right side of the target ....and following the theorem of intercepting lines the error will increase with distance to the target ...

I’m not convinced that walk back tuning is of great value. The primary reason being that if you are missing 1/4” at 20 yards you will miss 1/2” at 40 yards. So not only do you need to remove all the error in your level bubble before you walk back tune, you also need to remove the very small left-right errors in your sight before you can walk-back tune. You might shoot 20 shots before you can start tuning and might mess up a good tune accidentally in the process. I think you’re better off bare shaft tuning at 20 yards.
