Archery Review Arrow Comparison - Budget VS Expensive Arrows | Easton FMJ, Victory, Gold Tip

Спорт

The archery arrow industry is way over saturated with choices. This makes it almost impossible to choose the right arrow for you, so we're forced to focus on prices and marketing. This leaves out the potential for saving money in such an expensive sport. So the question today is, do $35 budget arrows actually suck? Not only am I comparing store branded arrows from Cabelas, Bass Pro, Sportsman's Warehouse, and Scheels in this arrow review, but I'm comparing them to high dollar arrows like the Easton FMJ 5mm and the Victory V1's.

    I bought a pack of 6 SW Ballistic Hunter for $36.99 400 spine 8.2 GPI 2” vanes at 28.5. They are made by Gold Tip. They are only “ok” and tend to be flyers mostly spiral down to the left(I have it on video) Looking into building my own or getting the Gold Tip Velocity or Pro series arrows. I’m a Hunter using 50#-60# bow and 28” 400 spline 125 broadheads. Trying to tune in a decent arrow setup that I’m confident in getting a hunt at 20-40yards in Utah mountains.

    There you go. Store brand arrows aren't cheap. You make them sound like a low quality product made without the same care as name brand product. I suspect that Blackout arrows are made by company that makes more expensive arrows. When producing a review video the words you use can change the original message you intended. So how about using the word 'inexpensive' in place of cheap. Think of it this way. Lexus is a Toyota luxury brand. If a guy buys a Corolla instead of a Lexus is he buying a product that cannot be trusted? If a guy buys a Toyota forva long distance trio will he be better off if he blows his wad on a Lexus? The Lexus comes with leather, impressive sound system, sound deadening from road noise and the Corolla does not. Does that mean the guy who buys the Corolla is screwed because he didn't buy a Lexus. There's so much ego out there. Guys smacking down other guys because they didn't blow a house payment on the same equipment they did. Internet forums, YT videos and out at the range guys are afraid to show up for fear of not having the right equipment. This alone can prevent new generations of new people taking up hunting, fishing, hiking, motorcycling or any other outdoor activity. My dad bought just about everything used. He bought a used rifle. An old Remington .30-06 pump with open sights. He shot a 12 pt. at 200 yards and just about everyone else didn't believe he made a shot like that without a scope. He did. Inexpensive products are for people who don't make $65/hr plus triple time for holidays but deserve quality equipment on a budget.

  • @SamuelWhiteArchery

    Hey Nikolaus, the arrow flight/groupings for the arrows should be fairly relative to the stats that I gave in the review, but that would be an awesome addition to the videos! The problem is, there are so many other factors that determine flight and groupings. For example: rest positioning, spine, foc, etc. So it would be almost impossible to keep it fair for every arrow. If I can find a way to make an apples to apples comparison, I will definitely add that to the reviews. Thanks for watching and for the great idea!

I have been using the Easton arrows for some time now and I thought that I was getting very good results. I have been experimenting with the VAP line - but I am experiencing a mixed bag of results. Neat coincidence: I watched your video comparison exactly a year to the day after you posted it. I've been hunting with Easton FMJs for about 10 years. I actually prefer the N-fused version, which seem slightly more durable. Some have gone through deer and stuck in the ground; then with some cleaning, a new broadhead, and occasionally, re-fletching, I've been able to use them multiple times. That helps defray the cost of--as you rightly pointed out--rather expensive arrows. That said; I'll definitely have to give the Victory and Scheel's arrows a closer look! Thanks for the review!

    You have the most detailed, informative archery videos I've ever seen. My buddy and I are very impressed. just got done watching your release video. Would you advocate specifically for a trigger release when it comes to hunting then? This is a great video for arrows. I'm going to use this for my dad who insists on letting the archery shop give him Beman arrows. do you think after doing these tests, you could actually shoot these arrows at let us see how the variations materialize downrange? That would be VERY cool

  • @SamuelWhiteArchery

    @SamuelWhiteArchery

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Nick, thank you so much for watching! Tell your buddy that I said thanks as well. In regard to the release, that purely comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer the wrist strap index trigger so they can relax their hand, others prefer the 3 finger thumb trigger for a better anchor and sometimes more control. It really comes down to testing and finding what works best for you. Also, I think that form of testing will likely be in one of my future videos!

    Awesome! Though I would like to see the raw data too. As a target archer I would like to see some more high-end arrow comparisons, though I do understand this may not be possible budget wise. Also, I would like to know what methods you used to determine everything, did you check spine around shaft, or just at one point? Did you check outside straightness only? or inside as well? (from my experience a lot of arrows are straight on the outside, but the hole is not concentric, and the components wobble, this usually happens in ultra micro shafts like x10s and CE nanos, probably because the wall is so thick). How was consistency calculated? Anyway, this is a great initiative! Maybe do stabilizers next?

    I've gotten a ton of requests for me to share some of the data, so expect that in the upcoming videos! I'll be going more into my methodology at some point. I've bought 7 dozen carbon hunter arrows from cabelas over the last 5 years. And have killed over 25 deer with them. In that 7 dozen I have only found 4 arrows that were to bad to fly straight at 40 yards. I really think you got a bad box of them. I check every arrow that goes into my quiver and practice arrows. These are all around great hunting arrows for the price. I have one arrow that has killed 5 deer and it's still in my quiver. That arrow still has original fletching ready for number 6. Most hunters can not out shoot the cheaper store branded arrows. Most target shooters can’t either. What I mean is that the expensive highest quality arrows are overkill for the average archer. I would like to see a shot comparison out of a hooter shooter. That way it is a true comparison taking the human element out of the equation. Also done at multiple distances to see at what point the quality starts to be a factor. Props to Samuel, well done video!

I consistently hunt in snow and raining conditions and can’t imagine how much the water sitting on the arrow changes the flight. I think it would be a good real world test, and basically throws out any idea of floating and tuning arrows.

    I watched the video and this is a great set of data; however, I wish the elite level victory shaft was compared to an FMJ match grade or another .001 straightness shaft like the gold tip pro hunter series. I think this would make for a more apples to apples comparison.

    Your amazement on the results amuse me. You're obviously very good at archery and this was a great review. I don't know your backstory, but welcome to life like everyone else! Lol. Before the internet, we had to go from store to store, talking to tons of people, all of course, who had their own preference and expertise. We had to read magazines and in the end, just had to do a ton of trial and error. As far as the price vs quality? Yeah, your amazement is a result of namebranditis. Sure 100 for 6 better be damn great for that much. But the rest of us, the broke-ass masses that shoot at a homemade target in the backyard on the weekends, those 3-4 buck arrows do just fine.

    Sam, Over all a great vid. Lots of info. Not surprising that the Victories scored so well. Looking forward to what you find in the Black Eagle line as I'm thinking of trying to get a sponsorship from them. There are a lot more factors in a hunting arrow than just spine, straightness and consistency. A hunting arrow, unlike a target shaft has to penetrate. In order to do that it has to carry momentum. What are the overall weights of the various arrows (shaft only)? Where is the arrow balanced with a 100 gr head? 125? (foc). How will the arrow hold up inside the animal as it goes through skin, meat and possibly bone? (lateral strength). Will the arrow hold a bend if it gets flexed? Which vanes are on them? How much noise do those vanes make as the arrow flies? Most, if not all, come with Blazers when fletched, possibly my least favorite vane. Keep up the good work. Hell night will be sometime toward the beginning of October. I'll call you when I know for sure.

    That would be interesting for sure, although I dont think many people would have it. With such tight tolerances the difference in .001 and .006 is negligible to the vast majority of archers and would most likely show little difference if any, unless of course the test was stacked in favour of a tighter tolerance arrow by using tiny target fletch and a very low FOC, where the straightness is relied upon to keep the arrow tracking true. A fair practical comparison would be a very good watch!

    Hey Nestly, love your videos by the way! Victory VAPs I’ve tested with a RAM tester show very similar results. All come in under for straightness and spine deflection and weight tolerance in a pack was fantastic. The only issue I’d with buying dozens of sets over the years in the sports and elites we’ve found in pack variation is minimal. Between packs we could have a few grains variance on raw arrow weight at full length. But still all spine and straightness were great box to box

  • @TheIngoBeck

    @TheIngoBeck

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's true. Victory's sorting is excellent. I've bought many dozens of Victory arrows and the weight consistency is always near perfect within a dozen but the packs have varied about 5 grains extreme spread. With built arrows I only end up with a .5-.75gr extreme spread in weight per matched dozen. I have found that V-force Gamers cut to my CTC length (28") have enough straighteness consistency to not have any visible wobble on an arrow spinner with a broadhead excepting maybe 1-2 culls per dozen. I cut from both ends.
