How I Power My Busking Amp

Музыка

A follow up from a video I made 3 years ago about the evolution of my busking set up. Hoping to answer some of the FAQs from that video and help anyone who is struggling to power or set up their busking equipment.
Here's my old video I made in 2017: • My Busking Set Up
Let me know in the comments what you use and where you busk. I'd be interested to know if you're busking during the pandemic and what the lockdown restrictions are where you are!
I would like to do a more in depth review of the Bose S1 Pro amp but this is more about batteries and inverters so I'll leave that for another some.

    Greta video Charlotte and INCREDIBLY helpful to folks. I watched your old 2018 vid ages ago and found it so informative. I've got a Bose L1 and they are fantastic - albeit a bit heavy. I power my set up using an all in one battery/inverter which is brilliant. Bought from Amazon and it as light as a feather, but the charge lasts foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrr! It's also got USB chargers on it too which is useful.

    Great information! Love the Bose S1 Pro system. We have a band for a non-profit organization that does music therapy programs for various Veteran groups in our area throughout the year. We have the full L1 system when we play in large venues, but have individual S1 Pros for each band member when we do smaller or shorter duration programs, or we just want to go battery-powered. The built-in auto-equalizing and anti-feedback circuits are amazing - Bose got these right. We can put the S1s right behind us if we want to also use them as monitors, and we get absolutely no feedback. I want to sell off all my personal gear and pick up a S1 Pro as well. However, I've noticed it struggles a bit with the low end from my upright bass; just ahve to be careful when playing on the E string :) Cheers!

    Hello I just wanted to say thanks for the informative video from a fellow busker! There are lots of new amps coming out for busking at the moment, I was looking at the Joyo BSK60 but its so heavy, fishman charge, fender acoustic go.....Was also considering the battery and inverter option. I hope you don't take it negatively but I had to share my opinion that amazon is partly/massively the reason why many shops like maplinss are closing or gone, just food for thought. Good luck with your music and keep bringing that lovely energy to the world!

    Hey no worries thanks for your comment! Its amazing how many battery powered amps are coming out now so external batteries are becoming more and more redundant really... Great point about Amazon, I'm not a fan of them as a company at all. But people are often asking for links to where to get the things I talk about in this video and the previous ones, and I haven't found any reliable sites for inverters etc...but you're right and I am a sell out ;) Thanks again for the lovely comment and good luck with all your busking! xxx

    That’s not really an option in London. There are no power outlets for public use and the place I play is on the river, the nearest power is the corporately owner London Eye, completely out of the question that they’d allow any kind of power to be used by me or any member of the public. That’s amazing to me that you have the option to plug into a power outlet? I can’t even fathom that being available here…

    Very helpful, thank you! One question: the converter you link to outputs a modified sine wave which usually interferes with speakers by causing buzzing sounds. Does this happen to you? Converters that output a pure sine wave instead of modified are better for sound equipment, no? Or have you not had a problem with buzzing sounds through your amp?

    So interesting, so many questions... What's the 'mast' on the Bose L1? Why golf buggy batteries? Did you have one of those before your bike? I'm guessing the inverter is what turns DC (from the battery) into AC (like electricity in a house), right? You are very strong (well, you're not as weak as you were last week). 😉

  • @ccampbellmusic

    @ccampbellmusic

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great questions Rob! The 'mast' on the Bose is an extra speaker that you can attached, its good for gigs because it brings the sound up to ear level, but I don't use it for busking because it is a bit more delicate and the bottom speaker is loud enough :) The golf buddy battery is just the best one I've found that is compact and powers a speaker well. There are other lithium batteries out there but they're quite heavy and bulky! I just use that as it was recommended by a fellow busker! I got the golf buggy battery in 2016 and my bike in 2017 :) DC/AC - yes exactly! ;)

    Jus wrapping the wires together isn’t a great solution. Soldering is definitely the most robust and safe way to connect the wires together. There is a third option though which is a good, safe halfway house. Car bullet cable connectors are suitable and cabals of carrying the current. They simply crimp onto the cables using a crimp tool (like pliers). They are available from any motoring shop. Another connector option is the battery connectors used in remote controlled models (cars, plane, etc). A good model shop would help connect them to the cables for a few quid. Hope that’s helpful.

Just slide it on before joining, solder the joint, slide the heat shrink over and heat it up. Careful not to melt the wires own insulation when heating it.
