I've used 1Tbsp Epsom salt to 1 gal water on my ferns every few weeks. They seem to love it. My ferns were so big!
@TamsPlace
2 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome! I’ve heard about Epsom salts but haven’t tried it. Maybe using that would help kill those dang worms. Lol! I might have to give it a try. Do you fertilize them also or just only use the Epsom salts?
@sandreawhite7534
Жыл бұрын
I use Epsom Salt too. I mix Miracle Grow, Epsom Salt and worm casting concentrated “tea” all in the same gallon and water that way. Amazon has the worm tea.
@sandreawhite7534
Жыл бұрын
Here’s another tip. Take the same gallon of miracle, Gro, Epson salt and worm tea freeze it in ice cube trays. (Yes they still make those lol) and then lay the cubes in your pots but not near the roots and just let them melt and it will make watering so much easier.
I put banana, orange, lemon peels in a blender, add a few cups of water, grind everything into a slush. Work it into the soil, water well. My ferns are GORGEOUS!!!!!! I do this 3xs a year. GORGEOUS, all natural, no bugs or chemicals.
So happy to hear about her upcoming content. I hope all is well with your family. Take care!

I watched your other video when I first got my fern in May 2020 and as of today my fern is very big. I only water it and mist it. When I first got it I would put it in the shower and let the steam settle on it. I love growing them and want to get another one ASAP bc of the success I’ve had with this one. Thank you Tam

Well Holy Crap! I live in the Southern states and yes I have this problem but not one soul has EVER told me what this was. I knew that ferns reproduce by spores so I didn't figure they were seeds but had a clue they were some kind of pest droppings but never seen any on the ferns. I have lost about all my ferns like this for about 20 years and I have asked people and the same answer comes back. "I don't know what it could be," has all ways be told to me. I never get mine eat like you said but it is killed before the leaves get eat I guess. And today I found your channel and get the answer. No now I know and I know what to do about it now. I have just stopped buying ferns for this reason. Ferns are my favorite house and outdoor plant but I kill every one I get or so I thought it was me. Now I know it isn't. Thank you Tam from the bottom, top and all in-between of my heart. You see, When people post videos like this and I know a lot of my friends thinks no one gets any good from them but they do. Everyone else might have known bout this but i didn't and I still wouldn't tell I seen this video. I am a fan now and going to watch the rest of your videos for more helpful tricks and information. Again THANK YOU.

You are so sweet and informative thank you for sharing this video! I just explored the woods across the street from my house and took a few cuttings of Fern since it was abundantly everywhere, so beautifully combined with the other plants- it looked like a fairy forest!!!! I’m in south Florida and there’s a lot of construction happening in my city. I always wanted to know what it looked like in the lot across from me... before someone buys it and they tear it down like they did the last few lots in my neighborhood😕 so I went on an adventure with my brother and I’m so glad I did! Anyways I really enjoyed my time watching and learning from this! Thanks again!!

Ferns here in Florida are just about considered a nuisance plant, especially if they are growing in the ground, they spread like crazy. That might not be such a bad thing, but snakes can hide beneath the fronds. But, some people here do still grow them in planters.
@TamsPlace
4 жыл бұрын
Lisa Uptagrafft I think the Boston ferns are best in hanging baskets because the fronds droop and get so long. I do have ferns in the ground but they’re the upright kind, so nothing slithery can hide under them!😂There’s so many plants that grow in the ground in Florida that I would love to grow in the ground here! I have ponytail palms in pots and use to have a sago Palm, but lost it😞

It’s great that you’re warning people about the caterpillars. I’m in NC, and I just got my first Boston Fern last month, and today, I threw it away:( Unbeknownst to me, it was being eaten away by these caterpillars for the last month, and I couldn’t understand the “seeds” (caterpillar droppings) that I kept finding all over the floor. Finally, I found and got rid of one, then two, then three caterpillars, and I thought I was in the clear, but I found what I believe to have been the first moth by the base of the plant last night. Maybe someday I’ll be brave enough to try ferns again (from the North lol), but I don’t think I’d dare have them indoors because of this exact problem. I can’t shake the fear that they’ve built some kind of nest inside my home🤢
Its good to see you. I was just thinking about you.

Hiya Tam, this was a superb tutorial. I really enjoyed it, and it was very helpful thankyou. I live in Lancashire, England, and we get lots of wet weather and very little sun. So my ferns thrive well. I was thinking of dividing them at the root ball so that I can use them for ground cover. My friends love my garden as it leads to an upward slope and it's at the slope where I have planted all the shrubs and fern. They tell me that my garden looks like a Japanese garden, so I am happy and thrilled with the outcome of my landscaping attempt.

Hello there neighbor! Thanks for subscribing☺️
I very much enjoyed your advise. Bought my first Boston fern in nearly 40 years a month or so ago from a grocery store. We live in the south but I haven't noticed any catapillar droppings. It's already nearly doubled in size with just watering and MG a few times. My question is, do they get so big to a point they need to be relocated to a larger pot than the one from the grocery store? TIA
@TamsPlace
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. I suppose they could, but ferns like to be somewhat root bound. I’m not sure how far south you are, but if you can keep the fern all year round then at some point you may need to repot it. Here in Ky I treat mine as an annual, so it never gets to that point. As long as it’s flourishing and doing good I’d keep it in the same pot, but if you think it needs to be repotted, I’d take a picture of how big it is and ask someone at a local nursery. I hope that helps.☺️

Teresa Brooks yes, that’s the fern caterpillar poop. Check your ferns very closely! Sometimes the worms are black and sometimes green, they’re very hard to see, but if you have those droppings underneath them, I’m sure there’s worms in them😞

@@gracemessageministries2881 I’ve tried bringing them in, but they’re just too messy, they drop fronds all winter. I just toss them at the end of the season and buy new ones the next year.

@TamsPlace ok thank you so much have a blessed day my love
Hi there! I'm new to your channel. I am a plant LOVER! I too grow massive Boston's! You are the first person I've ever seen grow ferns the size of mine. So this year I added some Queen Ann I think is what they called. They sit opposed to hanging. I bought 3 for my front porch. I treated them the same as my Bostons. Water daily, spray and fertilize with miracle grow. And let me tell you they are MASSIVE and absolutely beautiful. Every single person that has come over is big eyed and blow away at size and beauty. I will be sad when they go with the weather. I just don't have the room to bring them in along with all my other plants for the winter. You should ck them out next year. I know you would love them and will do just as good as your others.😊

kimmy kakes thank you so much for watching! I believe I’ve seen the Queen Anne ferns and would love to have a couple, but I have so many indoor plants that I bring out in the summer I don’t think I’d have room for them on my patio. Well, now you’ve got me thinking where I can put one🤔I may have to break down and get one next year, Lol! Thank you for suggesting them!☺️
What do you do for winter?

I just purchase them each spring. They’ll last into October depending on the weather. I’ve tried overwintering them but have never had any success and they’re so big I don’t have the room to bring them in and they make a mess.
I am also from KY and been thinking about buying a fern. Im just trying to get a little info. I want to just have as a house plant not have it outside. Are they easy to take care of in the house or do i need to put them outside? Thank you neighbor for the video.

You can care for them inside, but they drop so many fronds during the winter months, they make a mess. When I made this video I was still buying Boston ferns, but every time I buy them they have those Florida fern worms and I got tired of fighting them. I haven’t bought Boston ferns for two years now for that very reason, and it doesn’t matter where I buy them, they always get the worms☹️I need to do an updated video, Lol!

Thank you
I have two huge macho ferns as well. It looks like your ferns are in the sun? I would love to put mine out by the fence like you have yours. Help. Also I’m in Coastal Foley, Alabama.

I hope your ferns are doing good! I don’t keep the ferns here, I just put them out by the fence to show how big they get. I keep them in the shade.😊
What ferns can i grow indoors

Oh gosh, there are several I’m sure! I’m growing a birds nest fern indoors that I got last year. I kept it outside on my patio last summer when I bought it and brought it inside over the winter and it’s done great!
Went to three yard sales here in Ohio this weekend. Also thrift stores opened this week. Was nice to get out and look around. Wore a mask but seemed like a lot of people and businesses did not follow guidelines. On a bright note, found some items for my nephews birthday at a very reasonable price that would have cost a small fortune new😊. He will be very pleased. We are looking for a tiller also. Just missed one at one of the yard sales.😞 Win some,lose some.

Kim Gilson yaaa! I’m glad people are starting to have yard sales up there! I’m hoping they’ll start back soon here so can find some bargains! Stay safe!😊
Hi Tam, I love ferns, thank you for the tips. Do you take them indoors in the winter? Seems like people are really enjoying doing the live sales, you should try it. We still can't thrift or have yard sales here in Toronto. 😢 Keep happy and well.

Cheryl Ross hey girl, Thank you! I’ve tried overwintering them, but they end up making a mess and don’t really come back as beautiful, so I just buy new ones each year. I’m trying to get Scott to help me with a live sale😉we’ll see?

@@TamsPlace it would be great to see Scott do it with you, we all need a laugh. I also think it would be hard to do on your own. I'll be watching out for it. 👏
