**TIP - my mother had a Boston Fern in her bathroom for years. This thing was enormous - absolutely loved the humidity. She put a hook in the ceiling and hung it near a window.

That sounds awesome! Bathrooms generally have lots of humidity, and it sounds like the fern was very happy 😊 🌿

I have great success over wintering my geraniums in my garage. I cut back all of the flowers so the energy goes into the plant. I do water periodically if they look to dry. Then I bring them inside and place in a sunny window until it’s time to go back outdoors. Geraniums are my favorite annual and the fragrance of the leaves gives you a mood boost. Rub your leaves and enjoy!

We have giant native ferns that grow up here. We've planted a few orimentals to. Great and relatively inexpensive way to fill in spaeces :) Have a great weekend Steph !! Cheers 🌱😊

Thank you for your fern overwinter idea. I overwintered a fern one year and did exactly what you did. Cut it back and that fern almost tripled in size. I put it on a plant stand and the fronds had to be 4 ft long. Absolutely gorgeous. 💚🇨🇦

At least that is what I keep telling my husband 🤣 I just started youtube channel and now I can share plants I have (even thou we moved into the house in August of 2021 and my garden is very new) it's so much fun to share and in 5 years or so I can look back and see the progress I've made!!!

Thanks for the great tips! Gardening in New England has its challenges. I’ve been using my fern foliage to flush out my early bouquets. The fronds last a long time in the vase. 💐

I think it is also important to note that some ferns are perennial, even in colder climates as cold as zone 3. I tend to avoid cold hardy Boston fern substitutes - like Eastern hay-scented fern (a native) - simply because like ostrich fern - they can spread aggressively (and are very difficult to eradicate). In our shade gardens, we largely use Japanese painted ferns for texture and color. Godzilla is one of the best IMHO - growing 3 x 3 or so... extremely reliable here in Zone 6 Northern New England...

Hi Emma, Yes, absolutely. I focused on the annual ferns. But you are correct in that there are 2 versions. The annuals type as well as the perrenials. The Perrenial version is easier, in my opinion. But I do love these outside in containers for summer. I also have the painted fern and bought 1 of the godzilla last summer. My autumn brilliance fern is slow to return, though. Hope it made it through the winter 🤞

I am mad again. Last year I got very crispy ferns for $1 each and brought them back to life all summer but was ill and had to let them and my fall bulbs go. Same thing 2019 and lost all my plants when I was hospitalized and no one put them in the garage. I am tempted to buy one regular price and split it lol

Ivette, I left my flourishing garden in March 2017 to go to the U.S. and caregive my 93-year-old Mom❤. I was away for 3 years, give or take a few weeks in 2018 and 2019. My plants that lived survived on rainwater because nobody knew how nor was interested in pruning, watering (daughters puppy chomped on drip system when visiting)! I was mad as heck when I came home finally (after Mom passed😢) in January 2020. What a disaster my yard was, overgrown with weeds, plants were running rampant .. Working on my little Babes, planning and planting soothed my Soul. Since then, I built a paver patio and revived drip and am still working on hardscapes and finishing building a Pondless waterfall at the moment! Neither hubs nor son are interested, I do it for me. It all takes longer nowadays (I'm 67) but I love it. I hope you won't give up, just keep on truckin'😊. Don't rely on others who don't have your plant enthusiasm. I had even more setbacks in 2020 (surgeries) that I won't go into now. Take pics along your way. Now, if you really don't like gardening then just call your losses, chuck it in and have some wine😂. I’m looking forward to seeing how the divided ferns grow this season. I never thought about doing that. I just buy new ferns for my shady porch each year. Can they be divided now for this season and will they fill in?

I almost purchased some Boston ferns at HD today Steph, but I was afraid to because last year I had to water them so much. After seeing your video, I think they must've been root bound and is probably why I had to water them constantly. I'm afraid to try them again, but your video is kind of making me want to change my mind...😂

I have a huge Boston fern on my porch too heavy to move to basement or garage so I’d like to put it by a big window in the living room. I have spider issues around my house so do you think treating the soil and leaves as you suggested will be enough? I had heard diotomateous earth helps ??? Thoughts appreciated!

Hi Linda, While you can bring it inside, just know that boston ferns (or most ferns for that matter), do need lots of humidity. If you placed it in a bathroom it might do well, but in most homes especially in winter with the heat going, it gets a bit dry. This means that the ferns tend to dry out and drop a ton of foliage. Therefore, it gets pretty messy. So while its possible to keep it alive, (I have!), it does get pretty bare/sparse by the time spring rolls around again. I had them in my unheated basement, and they dropped a ton of foliage and I didn't mind since it was the basment. I just swept it up occasionally. Its is a fun experiment though, as they can certainly be kept as "houseplants". My grandmother always did. She however, misted them very regularly to add moisture and humidity to the foliage. She had Linoleum floors which made misting easier. I have hardwood which would be tough as I would have to ensure to protect the floor before misting. I have also run humidifiers on some house plants in the past. Its a bit of a job though lol.

Great video! This is my first time overwintering my ferns. My ferns are pretty large and I want to divide them. I am realizing I should have divided them in the fall before bringing them inside. Can I divide them this spring after they’ve been overwintered or do I need to wait until the upcoming fall? I believe you can divide ferns in the spring but I was not sure if that was the case if they had been overwintered? Thanks in advance!

That's actually a great idea. I think that would certainly help prevent a bit of the mess. You'll get lots of fronds that will pop up next season around the base of the plant.

Hi Joanna, Its possible that if you live in a warm climate, you don't have to take them in. I live in a colder climate (gardening zone 6) and here in Massachusetts, this variety of fern (Boston fern), is not winter hardy outdoors in cooler temps. Hope this helps.

My ferns keep dying. They look fine at first then the leaves start drying out. There are baby leaves growing but I'm afraid the brown thin vines will smother them. Should I keep on trying to save them? This is the 5th one over the past decade. Everytime I buy one I think that THIS TIME I will not kill it. There are so many instructions! Water it sparsely. Water it till its soaking. Water it every 10 days. 🥴 Help my fern to grow please? Lol

You said that you overwintered your geranium in the pot it was already planted in, and you just brought it indoors. My question: did you water it, and if so, how often?

Hi there, I did water them, maybe once a week or every other week, really when I remembered. Although to be honest, I'm not certain its even necessary as they go dormant for the winter. There are even some people who overwinter them as "bare roots". This means removing them from the soil, and just storing them in a paper grocery bag in a cool dark spot for winter.

Hi there, I explain this in the video. Its the process of keeping your plant alive over the winter.

I Overwintered two ferns, they barely dropped any leaves. all I did was move them into my garage for the winter. On pretty warmer days I would move them outside. A week ago we got pretty low temperature but not too bad but was still going to warm up during the day. I forgot to remove the plastic and two of my ferns leaves burned all off 😢. Do you think they'll come back? It was a lesson learned for me, . Ugh

I won't use black cow anymore. It turned into a bunch of junk and somebody's garden online died from some cow disease. I am working on my own compost too.
