Macho Fern Care :

#FernFriday is back! Fern friday season 2: episode 1 starting things off with the amazing and easy to grow Macho Fern! Macho fern which is Nephrolepis biserrata is an easy to grow fern. Just like the other Nephrolepis or sword ferns discussed in other videos, such as the Boston fern and kimberly queen fern, the macho fern is an easy to grow houseplant. Growing macho ferns indoors is easier than with many other ferns because it is more drought tolerant...for a fern. Macho ferns are hardy outdoors in zones 9 and up, though I suspect these ferns would survive in warm spots of zone 8 given a warm placement in the garden, though they may die back to the ground and need a little protection. Indoor fern care is sometimes complex, but growing the macho fern indoors is fairly easy. They do prefer evenly most, organically rich soil, but they are not as messy as other ferns like the boston fern. Give them a bright and sunny spot in the home with several hours of bright indirect light, away from drafts with weekly watering and they should do just fine. Macho ferns are clean air plants and they get big! These are giant ferns which will take up some space as they grow. Macho ferns are easy to propagate via division, just use a clean knife and divide them in the early spring and wait to fertilize planted divisions until signs of new growth occurs.

    "Macho Fern" is an apt description for this one. My first year to grow it. We have a spot next to the front porch/front door that is uncovered on the north side of the house. A bit of morning sun but moderate-bright shade most of the day. I've had a lot of success growing ferns in this space and the Macho fern really loved it. Bought in late April, a 2-gallon pot, fern almost two feet. Not it's October, the fern is huge (filling a 20" pot) with fronds at least 4' long or longer. They cascade beautifully over the sides of the pot and always have new fronds unfurling in the center. It certainly makes a statement beside the front door! Easy to grow, it did do well considering I wasn't as great keeping things watered over the summer due to recovering from major surgery. I did add fertilizer a few times and had planted it in Black Gold potting mix I get at Ace Hardware that has always been a great mix. Anyway, I highly recommend this fern if you want one (or more) that makes a statement!

    This has become my favorite fern. We had a really dry fall and winter( it last rained in February this comment is being made in September). i completely neglected the plants in my backyard in the early Spring. This plant was so dry, that all of the leaves fell off and the planter was basicly a pot of dirt. In mid June I started watering it again. after a month i started fertilzing the pot of dirt. My Macho fern has completely grown back after not getting ANY water for about 3.5 months. These plants are really touch. I will never do that again because they are so hard to find in my area.

    I just repotted a very small fern for a friend a few days ago because it was dying and when I looked at her soil it was very clayish. Now mind you she had purchased the plant from a florist/plant retailer and just put it in her home and started watering it. The soil had such poor drainage that I made the decision to take it out and “repot” just to improve the soil/drainage situation. What I found around the roots was shocking, they were impacted in this even more clay like soil that was making it difficult for them to reach out into the rest of the pot. I broke it up as gently and as thoroughly as I could flushed them with some water and then replanted with a good organic well draining soil. I also had to give it a haircut to get all the dry dead ends off lol. Hopefully it does better 🤞🤞🤞 Oh and by the way no idea what type of fern it is exactly, just a fern.... 😤😤😤

    That's so annoying isn't it!? Like they dig them from a field and just drop them into pots without bothering to change over to a potting mix and give them a few weeks in a shade house to recuperate. Sounds like you saved that ferns life!

    Hello! Please help I’ve had my macho fern for almost a month now and i’ve tried keeping it moist, placing in my bathroom where it is humid with plenty of light, removing dead leaves, and fertilizing. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like any of this is working. It's shedding so much I have a lot of brown tips and my plant is getting thinner by the day. I'm not sure what's going on or what to do. Any advice?

    Aloha! I live in Hawaii and am seriously obsessed with my Macho Fern. I "rescued" it from Walmart. I have it on a stand. It is REALLY large now and it has thin whispy roots about 3 feet long growing to the floor. I have a couple questions. If I cut these roots, will it hurt my fern? His name in Mr. Mondo, BTW, lol. Second question, if I can cut the roots, if I put them in soil will they grow new ferns? Hoping you will answer. Most people don't when their video was from 2019. Mahalo!! #FernFriday

    Aloha, Jasmine! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, it takes me a while to get through the comments each comment. You can cut the roots, they are sturdy ferns and as long you keep the main roots under the growing foliage, it should be just fine. I believe you can propagate the roots you cut also. I havent tried it, but I know when mine spread, all of those stringy runners take root in surrounding moist soil and start to grow new plants. Could be a fun experiment! Hope you are doing well.

    I bought a macho fern and it got really big so Ive had to transplant it twice now. Ive noticed lots of "strands" underneath it which look like aerial roots only bcuz there are no leaves on them. Is that normal? Also I brought it inside bcuz its getting cold here in Texas and Ive noticed lots and lots of spores on the leaves. Are those hazardous to my health? Just curious....hehe.

  • @TropicalPlantParty

    @TropicalPlantParty

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey, Rikki! Spores in general aren't great to inhale, but I dont know the extent of how dangerous they are. To be safe, I'd say avoid it, because I'd feel really bad if I said otherwise and you got sick😆😁 The stringy things are totally normal, those are usually their runners and sometimes aerial roots. I googled fern spores and danger and only found info about one specific fern being dangerous, but didn't find anything substantial saying that the rest are safe. But, just thinking logically, macho ferns and Boston ferns are extremely common houseplants and have been for decades, and centuries. Feel like there would be something significant warning people to stay away from the spores if they were highly dangerous. Right?
