How I got better off road

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Riding motorcycles off road is a completely new concept to me. I heard about an event in the mountains for dual sport riders of all skill levels. I figured something like that would be a good chance for me to get some single track seat time in.
The event is called "The Wander" and it completely changed how I look at off-road riding. My confidence in myself and my bike off-road has gone through the roof.
The event is in British Columbia, Canada in the Rocky Mountains. It spans a 8,000 square kilometre area and is almost entirely off-road. It's sort of like a giant geo cache scavenger hunt, but on dual sport/adventure bikes. You can really ride this event as hard as you want with a difficulty system of 1 -5.
Honestly, there is no secret formula in this video, just the importance of riding with other riders that have more seat time and experience.

I've dislocated my shoulder more times then I'd care to imagine was possible and the single most important trick I've learned to reset it in the field was taught to me a a much younger man by a doctor when I explained my remote lifestyle and adventures at the time... find a round object about the size of a baseball or softball "a balled fist works a treat I'd placed properly " place it as deep in the armpit as is allowed by the dislocation and slowly! Lever the arm over the object or fist well remaining as relaxed as possible key point! Tight things don't meve freely back in to place and alow the dislocation to reset 2 major tips are to relax as much as possible do not rush this painful procedure and take your time deeper the object "buddies fist" the better but don't move it it's a lever keep it still and firm tell everything pops back in to place

I don't comment on videos very often, but this video was outstanding. I am just beginning to dip my toes into the world of dual sports and you reminded me I need to take the same attitude that I share with others on the golf course. Challenge yourself, play with others significantly better than you, and most of all have fun. Thank you for the inspiring video and mad props on the editing.

This is fantastic! I've had my DR for a couple years now but being in Edmonton, it's been pretty purely a road machine- It's tough to find a place to take it and use it right (especially with a bunch of cruiser-riding buddies). Definitely gives a guy something to look into when the weather picks up again.

@@rangeroadmoto It was the best time of our life :) We tried to capture some of it in our videos then, but it doesn't portray our full feeling of it. It was an amazing experience to let go of everything and just take off. We woke up one morning, and just decided to go, we were packed and left at 5:00pm that evening. We originally wanted to do the TCAT, but due to time constraints, we stuck to mostly highway. In Manitoba and Alberta we did a bit of off road exploring along the way. Once we got to Kelowna BC, we explored a bit more there. If we ever get to go on a bike trip like that again, we would only wish for more time.

(long rant) I've road (and owned) a LOT of 'big superbikes'...V-Max, Hayabusa...and a few 'KX' and 'XR' style off-road bikes (probably 70-30 on mileage mix...but assuredly hundreds of thousands of miles over my 60+ years of walking around)...and from my own experience, ONE THING not only delayed the development of 'Enduro' or 'Dual Use' bikes...and that is the SINGLE-FOCUS guys who are determined to take any bike they get, and turn it into a 'KTM SX-450' dirt bike, and bash ANYONE who dares consider 'any other brand or style' (hey dude, you can fit knobbies on that Hayabusa, if you just take the fenders off, add this suspension, ditch a few hundred pounds, and take all those blinkers off!) You know the kind...and sad to say, a lot of them visit every-single-website, just to convince everyone to 'forget this, and head over to KTM's website'. A recent effort on my old, aching bones, was to buy back into bikes (I sold my last GS1100GL a while back...and have been 'bikeless' for some time now)...I convinced myself I was old, now I forget how good 'young' feels...and want it back. My idea, go out and buy into a nice 'Dual Sport'...something in the 600-700-cc range. I always liked Suzuki, so I figure...hey, hit their mfg website, see what models are new (money isn't really an object when you are old...the hell with building your own!)...and I see the DR-650...got classic lines, looks like it is set-up good...go on youtube and try to find some videos...AND EVERY 20-year old USED-BIKE 20-something WRENCH MONKEY is talking about how horrible this bike is, unless you are ready to strip it down to the last bolt, and rebuild it. NOT WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR. I CANNOT FIND A POSITIVE REVIEW of the DR-650 on the Internet (that isn't reimbursed somehow)! So...I go on 'bike magazine' sites and do the same...same deal. I'm like, 'ok...bad bike' (it happens, but normally to a known bike company where they've built the SAME MODEL for 30 years, but whatever). So, curiosity leads me over to KTM's site...not a name I am that familiar with...but their model lineup is NOT what I am looking for. I am NOT looking for a chainsaw (sorry...never was into 2-strokes), I need street-legal (without having to go to Tractor Supply to buy blinkers to 'self-install'). PEOPLE...I WANT A BIKE I CAN DRIVE 1-hour down I-40 on, hit the state road, take some TRAILS (not raw terrain that would scare the Rubicon guys), and be able to return without the bike being in shambles on return! I don't want to trailer the bike. I don't want to treat this like an ill-tempered horse, I don't want to have to contemplate hearing protection when I return (my same gripe about Harley morons and straight pipes...85-decibels at 50-ft, people!) I WANT A TRUE ENDURO...(for those of you old enough, what I'm saying is I want a Honda XL250...scaled up to 600-700-cc's! Now, there ARE (contrary to your opinion) people, a lot of people out there that will pay money for such a bike! THERE IS A MARKET! I want this to be designed and built like my 1-ton Chevy Silverado...I DON'T WANT TO TURN WRENCHES ON IT! I want to add gas, check oil and tire pressures, pack a bag, and go...I'm GOING FOR THE ADVENTURE, the SCENERY...not to see if I can rebuild a 4-valve engine with a pinecone in the middle of a hurricane at 12,000-ft elevation while being attacked by hungry grizzly bears. compounding this issue, is you often hear 'if I could only afford the KTM I'd ditch xxxxx bike I own now, and buy it'...so you're saying you are shifting a market, and you can't afford toilet paper? Nice...there are trolls, and then there are fools like this! After OVER A WEEK of searching, I found the bike I am getting...a Kawasaki KLR-650...NEW! (Imagine that)...in fact, my wife wants one too...so it will be a 2-bike purchase...that grease monkeys almost ran me away from, while giving NO INFORMATION on 'what is the best bike in this class' or 'comparing this model to that model, which one is generally overall better?' Hate to break it to you, but the 'wrench trolls without money' are UTTERLY DESTROYING the idea of 'riding a motorcycle', and I don't know if it is because of shows like 'Orange County Choppers' or peer tech-talk, or just dealer brainwashing...but it's got to stop! LISTEN to the questions posed, before you add your comments! If someone says 'what's the best superbike out there'...I have owned, and a lot of experience with not only Hayabusa, but the V-Max, a couple of Indians (even considered buying the Indian FTR Rally, just because of their quality...but for a 'Dual Sport', I really didn't want 1200-cc's off road, and the frames are a bit too small for me at 6'5" to be trying to 'knee-hug' a bend or hill on one...off-road. The $13,000 pricetag wasn't an issue, though...and if you aren't standing in my shoes...then explain your understanding of the bike you are commenting on, and UNCHANGED, recommend other similar models!). When someone asks...'what is the best bike?' You REALLY have to treat this like a 'what is the best wife' type of question. Mine is pretty (gorgeous when we married, 35-years ago)...so, if someone asked me such a question, my reply would be 'one that is smart, true-and-faithful, someone who is your best friend, most-annoying friend at times, someone who wants to understand you, and isn't afraid of what they find once that question is answered, and has many similarities with you...notice, I didn't sideline this with 'as soon as you brainwash her', or 'like cars, trade them in every 5-years to keep maximum value'...or 'ONLY THIS KIND is worth considering...' I mean, for a kid, I'd probably say it out loud, 'you don't want one that will cheat on you, or be irresponsible with money'...ok, great, got it...common sense, and not demeaning... From my own 50-years of riding a bike...yes, it is like a woman, girlfriend, wife...and fits what my old man told me decades ago, 'when you think you've chosen your wife...ask yourself one thing, would you love her and want her JUST AS MUCH, if you couldn't manage to change ONE SINGLE THING about her for the rest of your life? If the answer is 'YES", then you've got a plan... STOP SHADETREE REDESIGNING BIKES...most over 25 that want a 'commuter' or 'weekend mild plaything' don't want to spend their 10-hours a week for recreation, spent in their garage FIXING JUNK! In the process of trying to turn every other bike into a KTM Supercross model, you are SCARING AWAY OTHERS...and NOTHING kills a sport for YOU, than scaring others away from entering it! Sorry...this was a great video...that just drew that rant out, because there are SO FEW out there that understand what I've said...and OEM's are CONSTANTLY CHASING DESIGN INPUT from 'common user input', that leads to BAD BIKES (like a market for all these KTM 2-cycles..that doesn't exist beyond select niches)...I remember 1984...remember it well...and you'd see a Honda XL250 a dozen times a day on the roads...going somewhere, going offroad, through trails...and being as you just don't see that anymore, you need to stop and ask why. The answer is simple...THERE AREN'T ENOUGH OEMs BUILDING THEM ANYMORE! (but a lot of used KTMs for sale, because everyone 'jumped in because of the reviews', only to find all the 'hidden issues' with them, after they owned them and couldn't afford living day-to-day, and maintaining one...let alone using it!) Big thumbs up on the video, though!
