Into The Hills - Suzuki DR650

Ойын-сауық

It was time to get out in the hills and I was feeling well enough to go have an adventure and taking the Suzuki DR650 seemed the logical choice. So off into the hills I went!
Got to know my DR650 a lot better on this ride, I was feeling up to go exploring off the main dirt road and got on the jeep tracks leading off deeper into the hills. The only drawback was the stock tires, they just don't inspire confidence when you start to get into the interesting terrain. However, I did manage to drop the bike so I finally got that over with and now I'm really ready to ride!

    When you started talking yourself out of coming down the chunky part while injured and then did it anyhow and started cursing yourself as you were doing it I laughed out loud. Been there.

    By the way, this is one of the most scenic routes you have done. I enjoyed the drone footage in the beginning and middle too.

    Well, hang tight because I followed this trip up by returning and going much deeper into the hills on the XT. I'll have that video up in a few days. Appreciate you watching!

    Just about to enter the world of adventure riding in my mid 60s. The DR650 looks to be the perfect 50/50 bike. I’m from the St George area and am looking forward to exploring these great trails you show us. Thank you!

    I really like my DR, I don't think you can go wrong with one of these bikes. Build it how you want it and roll! Do yourself the favor and get the best protective gear you can afford!

    Well, I DID finally buy a new ‘23 DR650! Had to hunt one down. The dealers here seem to be at the whims of the manufacturers as far as getting particular models. Love this bike. 100 miles so far. Ordered lots of farkles to improve this thing-seat was the first item!

    Always enjoy your videos. i’m so jealous of the area you live. I’ m in Houston so pretty flat and 98% of the land in Texas is private

    I have the Acerbis 6.6 gallon tank Figured long as I was spending that much money I d go with the biggest one I use a one way vent on top of the cap When it’s laid down I usually see a little weeping from the cap Sometimes out of carb vent I get a lot of questions about how big is that tank Mostly from Harley riders oddly I’m very happy with it Gives me all the range I need I get way off in the back country of Wyoming and Montana a lot during the summer

    That's the one I'm thinking of, might as well get the biggest! Good to know heavy leaking isn't a problem. How was the install?

    Install on my 99 DR 650 was very simple to do You have to block the vacuum port on the carb that works with the stock petcock

    Subscribed, been enjoying your videos all day. Been getting the itch after not riding for over 10 years. I'm not into roadsters or cruisers and my sport bike days are long behind me. Always loved the dirt bikes I had, but don't want a single purpose bike that can't go on road again either. So here I am looking at dual sports, and your channel has been great. You're very down to earth and it's refreshing! Anyway, always been a team blue guy but they don't have anything right now that's affordable for me. So after much research I'm down to the DR, XR, or KLR... right where it seems a lot of people end up. Leaning more away from the KLR though after hearing nonstop about a doohickey of some sort and oil consumption problems, which sucks because while it would otherwise fit the bill for me perfectly, I don't think I can knowingly buy into a platform with known issues that haven't been fixed in over a decade. Loving the DR's simplicity.

    Appreciate you watching! I think the KLR is quite reliable and I don't worry about either of those things with mine. The only issue I've had with my KLR(2022) model is the fuel pump had to be replaced courtesy of Kawasaki. I had a 2012 KLR I bought used, had no problems with that one either. Regardless, both the DR and KLR are great bikes (at least that's what I think). My biggest concern is weight which is why I think the DR may be better suited for off road and the KLR better for on road but both are very capable at both.

    Just a Monday morning quarterback tip: lifting the bike, especially when injured, would go easier by removing the duffel from the rear. Glad you are OK.

  • @precipiceofgrind

    @precipiceofgrind

    You're definitely correct on that! I currently don't have a tail rack on the DR so I had a pile of bungee cords holding that duffel down and just didn't feel like undoing everything.

    You just have to equip the bike to do what you need it to do. Plus, you are sore and still a little weak. Been there. Its tough to heal up if u dont allow yourself enough time. Be safe!

    just starting with a DR650 at 72 years old. Haven't been on a dirt bike for 45 years! This will be interesting . Had my first offroad and first fall yesterday, that stock suspension leaves a lot to be desired.

    Between the DR, CRF, and XT which one has the best gearing for off-road? Which one just gets you through with the least amount of stalling? Which one will just keep chugging and climbing?

  • @precipiceofgrind

    @precipiceofgrind

    Жыл бұрын

    So far, the XT is my go to for that kind of riding. Still don't have enough experience on the DR but once I get a few things added and swapped out, the DR will be a force to contend with. Overall, the XT is really just perfect for getting way out in the bush!

    Just fine. DR is lighter so I get blown around a little easier than the KLR but it's surprisingly stable on highway/interstate.
