How I Dealt with the Log Cabin/Breezeway Settling Issue, Metal Roof Installation
Concerned about snow load and leak potential this winter, I decide to install a metal roof on my off grid log cabin, including a gable roof over the breezeway. As you remember, the tie-in is difficult since the breezeway is stick-framed and stable and the log cabin is going to settle up to 6" over time - the transition has to remain watertight despite this movement. To solve this, we built a dormer on the main cabin that is 6" higher than the gable roof on the breezeway. The breezeway is not attached to the cabin in any way, but instead a slip joint the entire height of the walls keeps the two building sections in alignment without impeding settlement and movement.

After a lifetime of solving problems with stick built, the whole concept of anticipating a 5-6 inch settle just pickles my mind! This whole build has been a masterclass. Totally engrossed by your vision!
I went for a 600 mile drive from Sudbury to the Muskoka back roads last Sunday. It was glorious! I've decided my dream is to live in Cold Water. We all fell in love with that little town. The colours were brilliant. I'm so happy to live in a place with four seasons. I think you did a miracle by doing that roof all alone but I didn't expect anything else from you. You must have a great sense of accomplishment and you must sleep like a log. All of this and still time for Cali. You just never disappoint.

We bought the writing desk from an antique store in Coldwater a few weeks ago. Our first house was in Moonstone so we grocery shopped in Coldwater and I still duck hunt the marsh and rivers there.

I grew up spending summers in Bracebridge at our cottage on the Muskoka River. So many good memories. It's alot more "touristy " now, but everything I love about nature & the outdoors started on that river. Not too far from the areas you have mentioned.

My husband and I really ENJOY watching you mastering anything you you try. Your masterpieces and meticulously created projects. I must say you do remind me of my wonderful husband John Bland, Jr. Thank you for creating your KZread channel! 🙇🏽♀️
already finished watching the hour plus MSR video this morning. Rarely do I have time/desire to watch 10 minute videos. Your work on YT is so appreciated. Thank you for sharing.
That one piece of roofing must of been a pain all around. But you got 'er done!! 👍👍
May God protect you and keep you safe. Don’t fall!!
You dropped that vent chimney panel in alike a boss! Glad to see the DeWalt aiding you to get it done right.
Great work! As a roofer myself I might have done a few things differently. Metal is tricky when it comes to roof penetrations and transitions. Looks to me like you should stay dry and warm this winter :)
So ingenious dealt! You are truly an amazing Builder too - together with so many additional skills and great talents! Thank you for inviting us all to your Self Reliance life project! Best regards and many blessings from Sweden!

I like how you explain what you doing on this channel, it all makes sense after watching MSR channel! Love both channels, thanks Shawn! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
That metal roof has to sound really nice when it rains.

The insulation that Shawn just installed and the planks underneath the membrane level will dampen most of the sound. I would also assume that Shawn will put some insulation in the spaces between the wooden structure underneath the roof (which are now only accessible from inside, so under the planks which will I guess will have larger wooden boards screwed onto them).
Not really good on the roofing issue but addicted to watch the video, somehow all viewers of this video vlog are learning at the same time. Stay connected and be safe while ontop of the cabin. Cali where are you🐕
It’s funny how I watch your videos as if I might need to a similar job someday. But, at 71 and a bit less than aptimal health, I’m pretty much settled. Just fun to always learn from the best.
No "member only My Self-Reliance" for me. But, I guess I'm glad to see Shawn James for free.
I feel I have learned more useful skills watching this channel than during my 6 years at University.
Such a magnificent build Shawn. So proud of you. I'm sure Mrs Shawn James is as well. What a home you two are going to have in a magnificent part of the world. All the best from your friends in Cheshire, UK.
I watched the full length video of the install. Great job single handed and you didn't even slice off a finger. But then again I watched what did with them timbers
Your metal roof will come in handy for rain collection for near future and easy snow removal for winter season. Shawn your videos are the first video I look forward to seeing on KZread even if I have to see them days after they are posted Thanks for sharing them.
Thanks for explaining, it just really shows how forward thinking you have to be to not run into major issues down the road!

Looks good Shawn! Little tin smithing and you will have it water tight! Always a good idea to check valley’s and porch seams a couple times a year!👏
In Florida we have to apply rubberizing sealant between the seams and adhesive rubber sheeting between the overlaps of metal roof panels before screwing down the metal roof. High winds during hurricanes cause the seams and sheets to flex and rain syphons up through openings created when the seams flex into the attic otherwise (I learned this the hard way) Also, the screws have to be replaced with longer and wider screws each time and seams resealed every 10 years due to loosening during hurricanes. Metal roofs need regular maintenance, but they never need to be replaced
Thank you Shawn, appreciate you my friend 🙏 You do amazing work, always great to hear from you, watch what you're accomplishing , always top notch in everything you do, stay safe and take care 🙂👋
Always enjoy the way you figure out the best solutions for every building problem! Nice work!
SHAWN & OUR CALI !!! Hello there !!! While watching the other video I remembered having the metal in the garage for over the windows doors and having it for the overhanging for the home !!! It is great that I have saved this for the home is slowly going down now so I can repair it myself little by little !!!
Fantastic job Shawn, and just in time by the looks of it. Your going to be snug as a bug this winter. Stay blessed❤️🔥🕊
Nicely done. You had some challenging intersects on that roof. I'm interested to see how you finish the chimney with a secondary roof jack. In 50 years of S/M I have seen problems with exposed fastener systems so I generally preferred concealed systems. Probably getting too late in the year to deal with the extra time needed to one-hand that type of system. Anyway I've admired your adventure almost from the beginning and vicariously enjoyed your progress.

Hey Shawn ,mir gefällt jede Episode von Dir ,ich kann nicht genug von Dir ansehen😅😀😚
Thank you for video Shawn, those trees look incredible so beautiful.
Beautiful craftsmanship.
Great thoughts have gone into your build, the future for the roof protection is great!
You, Mr. James, are an amazing human being. The depth and breadth of your knowledge and skills is mind blowing to a mere mortal such as myself.
Right on, Take care, and have a great day, all the best and God bless
My OCD tendencies made me rush here to find out why a second cone or boot wasn't installed to seal the chimney. And now I know, and I feel better. 😁 Thanks for the details!
Cool. I plan to tear down 1/2 of my cabin now standing on pilars, and then build a new section on a solid base with a frost free and stable basement. The problem is that the existing section is 'rooted' above the frost level and the entire cabin moves upwards in winter. (I don't want to demolish the entire cabin as it has a beautiful interior). This video gave me some ideas how to fuse the two sections.
looking good Jimmy
Enjoying weather windy Autumn colors priceless magical. I see the shape is different around the stove beautiful Shawn congratulations .hello to family and Cali 🐾🐾❤️

Just so beautiful there.
Your channel is amazing. If you ever have the chance to visit Western North Carolina in the states, this time of year is perfect. Mountains, foliage color, great weather with 35F morning temps and 75F afternoons. Lots of sun.
Hey Shawn, I'd consider getting snow stops or a wicket in front of your stovepipe. I lost my pipe in less distance. It'll save you alot of head ache.
merci JAMES
Looks great....I guess that skill of working with sheet metal has paid off...glad you decided to put the dormer style roof on the mud room.stay safe Shawn.
It has been warm with no rain in PBW also. Better than Summer. Just beautiful down here and obviously up where you are.

Know what you mean about the colors this season...and driving through trees with the afternoon sun shining through, especially, the yellows of birches...been getting some amazing photos here in central VT too. Gotta love fall!
Greetings from Australia 🌏
Shawn you have more than rain coming my friend. I'm due west in Marquette. We are having flurries and rain as I write. We are expecting 2 on Sunday and 7.5 on Monday. Glad your earlier post showed tin roof going on and all your windows in........
Hard work getting ready for winter.
Oh my an electric drill. All right! Thanks for the videos from bills cool projects on youtube
I like the double cone idea. I may try that if my single cone install fails. So far so good though...
Hi Shawn, I am a little confused, I watched you do the chimney yesterday on your other channel, so I was not expecting to see it again today. I also saw you nearly fall yesterday, and I was not looking forward to that, I know you will not fall but telling my brain that dose not make it any better. Keep on with the good work and be careful not to slip on that icy roof.

Good stuff

Morning Snow in Bancroft last week.
Yup there's always something! lol Thanks for explaining.
Bon weekend Shawn. Je reviendrai sur cette vidéo, mais j'ai beaucoup de boulot..soyez prudent
. The snowflakes will be falling on that lovely roof early next week! Major accomplishment completed, congrats!
Lookin' good.
Beautiful work, these sheet metal roofs, if not well finished, are a source of infiltration. The sandwich sheet makes less noise.
" FIRST SNOW" ( Lake Superior In Wisconsin ) ... Shawn ...You need to hurry and finish roof...looks like an early Winter ! Best wishes , Grandpa Ron😊
Metal roof is the way to go. That cabin will last a very long time for generations solidly dry and more fire proof under it. Did you have any luck with those screw tap wells Shawn?
Great !!
