How and Why I'm Chinking my Log Cabin
Three solid days of chinking and my log cabin is close to weathertight, and hopefully rodent proof.

This winter is going to be so much more cozy than camping in the greenhouse! LOVE IT!
I love the fact that you left the logs dirty. They will weather and have such a natural look. I hate it when people grind and sand their logs.
My friend needs her garbage disposal replaced... something that is well within my capabilities to do... BUT I'm no longer in my forties, fifties, sixties OR seventies. We decided it would be better to have a handyman do the work. I watch you Shawn and though I NEVER would have tackled the projects you have, I miss the days when I could swing a hammer, use a saw, or a chisel and wrench to imagine AND create something in and around a home. Thank you for sharing your efforts with us all. It reminds me what it was like to be young and engaged with life. Self reliance becomes a different thing when the body ages and simple tasks become more complicated. Glad you're enjoying your life. Hope you're able to continue on KZread.
Your hard work and attention to detail never fails to amaze me Shawn. You've built a beautiful home. Thanks for posting.
I still can't believe that with hand tools and the weight and size of the logs that you got the joints so tight. I love your (and mine vicariously) cabin so much.
When you listed all the jobs you had planned before winter in a video a few weeks ago I thought you didn’t have enough time. Well you did it and with good weather for another 7-12 days you will probably have enough time to dig most of the holes for the outdoor kitchen. Way to go Shawn!
I recall your calking experience in the previous cabin; you are doing it much faster this time. 😊
You, standing by your cabin outside wall, really gives you the perspective of how massive those logs are you used to build the cabin. Amazing you managed to assemble them all by yourself. You definitely planned that part very well. You will have a warm and cozy cabin during the winter months for sure. It is wonderful the weather is cooperating for you to finish up the trimming etc. I hope your family presents you with a brass plaque regarding "The house that Dad built!" Such a colossal achievement. It would be wonderful to have a marker stating a bit of the history of your build for years to come. Congratulations on the incredible construction of your woodland home. Can't wait to see the way you decorate the inside. :)

My back hurts just looking at the beautiful home you've built by yourself (even though I've watched you lay every log). Thanks so much for making these videos.
20 degrees sounds very comfortable! Nice to have that kind of weather before the long, cold winter starts.
So happy that you have the cabin ready for the winter! You have done an AMAZING job!!!!
Hey Shawn ! I can’t even imagine how beautiful this cabin and property will look when finished, great job and best of luck going forward !
Happy Friday from Chicago!!!! Love the progress Shawn. L73
Cabin looks awesome Shawn. Great job!
Job well done Shawn. The cabin looks great and so inviting.
Nice work! Love watching these ❤
Hell of a cabin that will stand any kind of weather good job ☮️🪵
Thanks for the update. The cabin looks great and very cozy for the coming winter.👍🎄
We were so lucky this fall. Weather has been so nice here in northern ontario. Cabin coming along quite well Shawn. Have a great week.
Beautiful work on the cabin as always. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about why you have to do certain things.
Well done. Cabin looks great.
The imperfections that you just made mention of looks like perfections to me. A job well done and the way you can correct errors shows the understanding of what you are doing. Job well done. Oh yes enjoy watching Cali.
Hi Mr Shawn. We to are getting our "last chance" of good weather this weekend to finish winterizing around the house. Have a great weekend to you and yours 😊
Now you will have a nice air tight cabin. Your cabin is so awesome.
Getting all sealed up, glad the weather cooperated for you, it`s unusually warm here in Michigan to,we are in upper 60`s low 70`s F. The cabin looks great.
The cabin is looking awesome.
My absolute happy place: lot's of rain☔🌧️❤️ It makes being inside so cozy. Especially in a beautiful cabin!👍🤗
Killing it Shawn as usual! Amazing skills you possess! Bravo from Portland Oregon! 🌲❤️💪👏
Shawn you are true renaissance man, Your family should be proud to have you, beautiful cabin can't wait until your finish,I also would love to see when you began to put things in your cabin.😊
Good deal that you got that outside cabin caulked, the inside can be done when bad weather hits. I used a similar log caulk for our cabin, works great.
SHAWN & OUR CALI I know a day or so late but I am here !!! Missed the talking of you so glad I am watching this tonight !!! It is relaxing watching you and knowing the feel of that wood under my own hands it is GREAT TO FEEL IT !!!
Gosh it looks so big in the shot with you standing next to it! What an incredible achievement, one man, basic tools, even logging and sawing the timber! Fromwhat I have seen in the past, I know when this one is done, there will be more and more again. Incredible! Its supposed to be mid spring here in Australia. I am in Canberra the Capitol. Its been overcast or wet 98% of the time over the past year, we are living climate change, its normally hot and dry here in Summmer, this season will be tropical.
Looks so good
as always love the work you do!
Its really beautiful looking. thanks for posting.
Snow and -7 this morning here, cool is on the way they say ! Your almost have it beat no worries there. All the Best Mr. James enjoy your Harvest ! Take Care !
A truly beautiful cabin and those large logs you used sure look majestic. It's always interesting to hear your narrative in these and then watch your main channel to watch the building process. 👍
Just last week due to alterations in fire codes in the Uk, I had a new outside door fitted and after the workmen had left, was outside cleaning up and noticed the surround had not been sealed. So out with the caulking gun and did it myself so when the painter arrived , lo and behold he said "Who did this? As it is not what we normally use caulking wise." and I told him I did it, as I hate unfinished work. So now the flat is sealed up good and tight and all that needs doing is for the joiner to return and build in the surrounding floorwork that still has not been finished as it should have been. So Shawn that reminded me of the half hour I took out of my busy day to seal the door surround and now its hardened I can sand it down and if need be touch up any pant work I have dislodged . Cheers the Noo from Scotland.
It's great watching the videos on your other channel then coming here to have any questions answered.
Lesson learned: birds do love to use sphagnum moss for nest building. Good that you're caulking, too.
As far as I no ur Perfection Shawn congratulations ‼️‼️🫶🏼🐾🐾🥑🌶🥕🫐🥚🍎🍍
The chinking caulk looks really good. I could hardly tell that is was caulk. Nice job.
Thanks, Shawn.
Great weather for that product. It will be so much better with the longer warm cure period.
great video .
Great video!
Love the door!
Love this video
Shawn, my dad retired from a company that made architectural doors from "knot blocks" from lumber that was to be finger joined, and they glued these blocks to a one or two inch plywood core, which had a minimum of 3-4" thickness. Your hinges reminded me of these doors as they were quite heavy. These were sold mostly in north America, plus they made room dividers for offices that were aesthetic and practical as they partially blocked the views for privacy reasons, but these tended to be made of exotic woods as well.
Another great video Friday morning November 4th local time 8:04 AM🐕👍NC
Your cabin looks huge when you are standing next to it!
Shawn, you re-hanging that front door reminds me of 1990 ish, when I built my house. I loved log cabins but was afraid of all the maintenance later in life, so I built my interior doors out of 2x6 tongue and grove boards that are flat on one side and v-grove on the other. I hung those by myself and it was pretty tough. I think there was 5? I’m glad and amazed to see you still be able to do that manual labor. My days of big projects are over but enjoy seeing you build this beautiful cabin does me good
I always think it's so weird that our weather is always the same in Wisconsin when you post. But I suppose you are just right up there ^
Awesome Shawn thanks so much for sharing! 😎😎😎✅✅✅🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
The cabin is looking so good and your exterior finishing touches will make for a very cozy retreat from the harsh winter temps and conditions. Great job (as always) Shawn!
Amazing!!!!
I've used dymonic to maintain the chinking at my cabin simce the mid 90's. Work 's great.

Very, Very nice.!
I helped my friend re-chink his log cabin up in the Calabogie area a few years ago, so I know exactly what you're talking about. It's great to see that you're able to capitalize on our surprisingly mild fall weather to get all of those details taken care of. Your place is looking fantastic, Shawn!
I'm 58 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, we are finding it impossible to replace it. We can get by, but cant seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 40years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.......

Excellent advice if you have any money left in your paycheck to invest. Democrats have put in motion the highest inflation in over 40 years and continue to waste taxpayer money at an incredible rate that will cause all the high taxes we now pay will seem like buying a hamburg at McDonald's. Wait until we start getting the bill for the several million illegal immigrants we are supporting costing us hundreds of millions of dollars every week. How much money have we already given to Ukraine 160 BILLION DOLLARS with more to be sent. It goes on and on. You might not recognize the cost right now but as our infrastructure falls apart in front of our eyes along with many other issues we will be told raising taxes will be necessary to make repairs or rebuild. We are going to pay and pay dearly people will have to work to the day they die there will be no more retirement benefits for anyone. Remember what I'm saying it WILL happen.

You really need to do your research. Biden hasn’t been in the White House long enough to cause you such grief. He has been working on UNDOING the wrongs that the previous administration did. This country was not built on citizens supporting the rich by giving them lower taxation than the working man/woman. TRump made sure his rich friends got a tax break, not the working class. Use your head and find out the truth about what happened during the last administration. DO YOUR RESEARCH…DO NOT WATCH THE NEWS SORCES YOU/VE BEEN WATCHING!

Lookin goood😉 You should be as warm as toast when the cold weather hits, sealed up nice and tight.
Looking good and you have the weather on your side which is a bonus at this time of year. Take care, be safe. ❤ Dorset, UK
Thank you
Joe Caulker playin the bulkgun blues!
You have got a lot s done this past summer ….💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
nice progres
Just an idea...You can do some mason work with natural stone to cover the cemented part at the base of the cabin (3:41), I think it would look better than just leave it as is! :)
20C a week into November in the southern boreal forest.. wow hope it gets cold soon
Thanks for all the wonderful content through the years! Just curious about why you've chosen to have the door open inwards rather than out? I've seen a few other builds where the doors were made to open outwards for safety with bears and to save space.
We used to use asbestos tape on duct joints. So they all now have to be covered over with Aluminum Foil Tape.
Keep the posts coming Shawn - every one makes our days.
Coffee time ! Love the porch and door! Appreciate the explanation about the door! You and your family have a blessed weekend!🌼
hi, you need to do all the windows insulation, trim outside and your doors too.
I understand the semifloating door.
Your log home is a thing of beauty. Love the rustic look. Just wondering will you have to redo the chinking every so often? The work you have done is amazing.
Looks like a tedious job, but necessary for an overall seal.
GOOD JOB, SHAWN!!! I LEFT A MORE DETAILED COMMENT ON YOUR OTHER CHANNEL!!!!! Do take care. Fl., U.S.A.
I thought the same thing, Wow that cabin looks massive and each log does too. Shawn, you must stand back after it’s done and winder “how on earth did I do that by myself”?
Yeah this is needed Shawn. You have food storage now to think about for the building too. Its not at all like the last cabin. This is a totally different animal of Cabin.
Are you still going to dig the footings for the outdoor kitchen?
Have you chinked insulation around your windows so you can put the exterior trim on your windows before the cold driving air comes? All roof caulking completed? Sorry I may have missed a few episodes. God Bless you and your family Shawn.
Obrigado por té enviado os vídios.
Maybe you already know about it, but a good mixture to treat the woodwork is wood tar mixed with lindole. If you also mix in a color pigment, it will protect even better against the sun's ultraviolet light.

Please tell when your area was logged last. Here in SW Washington State the trees would look about like where you are now about 10 years after a clear cut.
Hey Shawn, just curious, but would it be helpful to smooth out the surface of the logs in order to apply a waterproofing finish!! Like some sort of weather proof clear coat. That way the exterior of the logs don't rot. Just curious if you would do that??!! By the way, I love your show!! You do awesome work 👏!! Quality craftsmanship!!
chinking looks great
Beautiful Cabin just looking at the logs how massive big they are Just Awesome Thank you for sharing this with us 💕I hope you can continue to find things to share with us. Thank you.
Eu mesmo sem entender tudo q vc fala. Mas eu amo a o seu indioma!!!!!!!
I watched you build this new place since you moved from the old one
We just bought a 100 year old log home and it needs to be re chinked. I was hoping you would give more details on what you used and how you did it. Close up pictures would be helpful.

I would like to know what you used also. 😁 please?!?
It seems like the outer 6 x 8s in the basement are bearing the load of the log walls while the interior 6 x 8 is not. I wonder if the cabin floor bowing will become more pronounced as the outer 6 x 8s keep compressing. Settling is a vexing issue. Hard to think of all the possibilities. I guess it wouldn't be an authentic rustic cabin without an uneven floor. Beautiful home!
do you plan to show us the color and texture of the sealant on your logs?

Look at the logs by the door at the end of the video…you can just barely see the brown between the logs. And probably when he posts the work video to his My Self Reliance channel, you’ll see it going in up close.
what caulking product was used? I need it on my log cabin!
Looks like you've beaten the weather this year. Any plans to start outbuildings during the winter? Or just to gather materials?

Hello, Shawn !!!! There’s a suggestion about chinking the cracks: GET LOTS OF CINNAMON STICKS to chink the cracks. They are known to be great repellent for RODENTS!!!! Good luck and hugs from Regina, Michigan, USA. 🍀🍂🍀🍀
is the chinking a sanded grout that is modified for flexibility? what they use for tile?
