How I Built My New Studio

I took a month off shooting videos to completely rework my studio. It was a whole thing, so I made a video out of it.

I have my wife a roller set up and brush to cut in corners once to repaint the wall, I came back later that day and unknown to me she had painted the whole wall three times with the brush. Tan to dark red. I was in so much trouble when I said wow you got your first coat on already, there are just a few holidays and a second coat should darken up the red so the tan isn't visible anymore.... Always ask how many coats a spouse put on before assuming lol. We hit it with the roller together and it turned out great... I just never thought some one would use a brush when the roller was right there ready to go!

Before the comment section is flooded with the inevitable criticisms of my work here, please know - I am well aware of how much I suck at design, building, organizing, and computer audio and video systems. I have my skills but those are not amongst them. That's frankly why I'm kinda proud of this. And I am still working on the setup, it's an ongoing thing, so some of this might change up quite a bit. But sometimes in life you gotta just do the thing, even if you suck at it. There's your wholesomeness for the day. :)

Pro tip with the painter's tape: 1. apply tape 2. use a brush and paint the background right on the edge so it seeps into the micro cracks underneath the tape 3. let the background color dry for a couple hours and then do the actual painting with the foreground color 4. remove the tape before the foreground color had time to dry. Result: razor sharp lines all the way through

Joe please film yourself continuing the setup and cleaning. It will kill two birds with one stone. We will get a new type of content from you that a fair amount of us seem to like. AND you will be forced to finish your organization since we will be expecting an update. The former Drill Sergeant in me was coming out with all that dust man. That clutter on your desk is making my eyes twitch. If I may make an organization recommendation to you Joe. Lay out everything once on the floor and get a trash bag. Go through it and immediately find each item it's spot in your new wall unit. Anything left on the floor is trash or should be donated. After the first go around everything is at least in a home and you can make adjustments from there with at least an organized space. Great work man. I missed you and your content. Hope you enjoy your new set and can't wait to see what new ideas it brings you.

I absolutely love taking off the outlet covers and not needing to make perfect lines underneath. However, I don't think people don't do it for the challenge... likely they have never seen it done or thought about it. It isn't that obvious of a thing for your average person who will maybe paint their walls a few times in their life.

Good job, Joe! Isn't it incredible how we try to convince ourselves that practicality and efficiency are the ultimate objectives of everything, but in the end, what we really seek is beauty? Why is it that the interior of a hospital is ugly, but a private clinic takes care to have marble walls with hanging plants and beautiful paintings? Even your office, like many others, can be efficient and functional, but to make a difference, you must add beauty, the ultimate stage that people aspire to.

Thanks for the video, I'm always interested in seeing how people are setting up their studios. A bit of advice, get some ez sliders for your furniture. Makes moving it around on carpet a breeze (especially desks, your bookshelves have smooth bottoms so not as big a deal there). Makes things like doing a great job vacuuming etc... WAY easier too.

I'm a Gen X house husband (Wife and 3 kids) and it warms my heart to see your process. 1. Yeah, ceiling lighting is an abomination to all things. Side lights, up lights and strips forever. 2. Dust! I mean....yeah we all know where it comes from but really! Do I actually have windows and four walls? My living room just generates a blizzard when the sun is out and the bathrooms have a darker variant. It's like the source of bellybutton fluff. The origin story. 3. Cable management is a life option, you could go to great egotistical lengths and create artistic flows and awe striking kemptness oooooooooorrrrrr........ You can just live with it. I have gone with the latter (tangent note - if I start tidying the cables to a pristine manner then I might change who I really am. I like who I am) 4. It's just you doing it.....apart from the bits that need doing precisely. That's why I'm still married. 5. Masking tape on paintwork never works and life is too short to perfect this, hide it and move on.....no....no....just move on. See! Nothing to see here. 6. I relate to you on a molecular level. Thank you. 7. Maximilian from The Black Hole. Highly underated. I had one and V.I.N.C.E.N.T and Old B.O.B. right next to C3PO on my window ledge. I have an 8" Artoo under my TV now because........ because. The new set up looks awesome by the way. Top work fella. I didn't realise that door led to a bathroom. Maybe (for no reason whatsoever) leave it open for a side tangent piece and without any explanation, let an ominous red glow appear from the bowl and before you cut back to the main camera, just a quick eye flick to it........ahh that reminds me, I haven't had my pills yet. Thank you Sir. This was superb. Love from Liverpool UK.

Also, I am 95% sure you need to sand the old paint slightly before putting the new paint on, otherwise the paint will be easier to pull off like with tape for example.

For 6 years of dust, that's actually a lot less than i get in a few months in my city apartment. So you're pretty lucky. IMO the new arrangement looks good. We're all reticent to change, naturally, so i'll miss the old setup, but the new one isn't bad either. IMHO, you should move all the light stands on the ceiling and off the ground. Cameras too. A simple gantry wall (it's essentially a stud wall, but you hang your stuff from it) can be made with minimum wall hollage.

A shop vacuum with a small and large brush attachment. When cleaning the shelves you can use the small brush and it will get the majority of the dust, spider webs, and debris before doing the final cleaning by hand. Then attach the large brush to do the same with the wall. The crevice tool can be used in the corners and where the wall and floor meet to get dirt and debris that the carpet vacuum will have trouble getting. A small shop vacuum with all the attachments can make life so much easier when it comes to cleaning up messes.

To be honest I saw the 53 min vid length and was like, "holy shit" and then I started watching. There is so much here I might just watch it again. I have a gaming channel. It's very small. I'm actually kind of proud of that because most gaming channels that are huge are, well, "fake" huge ya know wink wink. I have struggled with audio for the entire three plus years my channel has existed. I've nearly quit a lot of times because of it. I finally have a great mic but my computer is struggling with the sheer number of inputs it has to deal with. I love that you explain what your equipment does. You can't know how much more helpful it has been to watch this than to try and thumb through ten thousand pieces of advice on what sound equipment I should use. Of course I sat through the entire video. 52:46 EPIC. 24k views of a 53 minute video = Super Epic. Nicely done. Thank you so much for sharing all of this - it is truly inspiring.

I had no idea how much went into making a nice KZreadrs studio.... thank you so much for sharing!!! Also great job prioritizing the work so you could record when you needed to.... I definitely missed your videos. Not much of a "vacation" for you, was it?!

Hehe, yes and no. It was a nice break from constantly being on deadline with scripts. I was able to watch movies while I was working, which I can't normally do.

Wow I am inspired now to clean my office! You did an awesome job and kept me watching the entire time. I love the wood wall since it brings a lot of texture to the background. I liked the old background but when I saw the new one, I realized how much better it looks. I am sure the new space is very inspirational for new or different content! I also have 2 desk work stations in my office and it works well since each desk has a specific purpose so for some odd reason it makes me more efficient. I am surprised at all the tech gear that you need with KZread ! I still think that people are recording with their cameras but maybe that's the beauty of it, the audience doesn't know. Well done and you'll pick up those views again - it's better to have a creative break!!

9:38 So cool to see the color darken and blending in with the already dry one... Wait. Did Joe just make me excited about watching paint dry? That sly bastard!

When I looked at the thumbnail, before I actually read the title, I thought this will be a mental health improvement video. You really look happier with the new space :)

Just something to consider: Donate your old books to your local library. Goodwill is a for profit charity. Libraries need a lot of help right now and they use the books to raise fund thru book sales.

Nicely done, Joe! If you still need ideas on how to mount lights below the ceiling and save you floor space, take a look at wall-to-wall / floor-to-ceiling tension rods like the Impact Varipole system (on B&H). It mounts very well just by tension alone, but if necessary, there are also ways to mount it more permanently with screws. … Sade!! ❤🎶

There once was a youtuber, Joe. Who said this old space has to go. So with sweat and with strain, and it all rearranged, now's the time to shout, "On with the show!" (love what you've accomplished, stoked to see what's next)

Watching Joe literally made me want to make a YT channel. And I did! It is now my hobby and I wake up at 5AM, before work, to play at being Joe. (5AM is the only time in my house it is quiet enough to record anything.) Thank you Joe.

i just can't get over the fact that you bought an Intel Mac Pro with sooo many flavors of Apple silicon already available. pretty sure an M1 Ultra Mac Studio would've been waaay cheaper, smaller, and more powerful for video editing and/or audio mixing. but hey, maybe there's a specific thing that made you go with an Intel Mac Pro, and i really wanna know about it if that's the case. either way, congrats on the new studio!
