I don't comment often. I am a baby boomer. I was a teenager in the 1960s. The big thing to do then was to get involved, make a difference, be socially aware, stand up for what you believe in. Now all of that is well and good but in the end, what are all those hippies doing now, the ones that lived that is. I guess some of them are still trying to make a difference but I think most of them just fell in to step with earning a living, raising a family and wondering what happened. I used to overthink everything. That is exhausting and nothing gets done. Once you learn to prioritize and do the thing that is the priority, stuff gets easier, clearer, and manageable. You can get so engrossed in everything around you that you can lose sight of what is important. When you have one of those "Ah Ha" moments, all the chaff just floats away. Now I don't know if what I have said even relates to what you were asking but, I'm a senior citizen and I just say what I like. LOL

"Performative outrage." Indeed! The REALLY, REALLY, REALLY asinine thing is that those people refuse to take into account what the "offender's" _intent_ was. It should matter whether or not someone _intended_ to be offensive, but sadly the overwhelming desire to be offended leaves no room for such rational, civil, mature behavior.

This should be the top comment. I've watched for the better part of a couple decades as intent has been more aggressively eroded as having even the vaguest importance in not just this context but every context be it legal, creative, philosophical, or just basic social interaction. My own life has been repeatedly damaged because of this intellectual cancer. It's why I laugh every time I hear someone yet again pull the "cancel culture isn't real" schtick. Especially when, like in Joe's case, they go on to detail examples of cancel culture. These days, we no longer care about what you meant and rather are purely obsessed with a kind of bastard lovechild between consequentialism and interpretive dance focused not on the dancer but the audiences' read. It's utterly bizarre people have yet to question something that takes agency completely away from the speaker and hands all of it to the receiver. What's the point in speaking if I have no control over my own word? It's like a societal equivalent to battered spouse syndrome.

  • @CoreenMontagna

I think there is some nuance here in that the hurt/pain/etc caused by the offensive behavior is in fact real regardless of the intent of the offender. But how we respond, how the offense is addressed SHOULD change depending on intent. After all, that’s why we have murder and manslaughter, right? Because we recognize that for the ultimate offense, intent absolutely matters. It matters in the littlest things too. But I think that some of the backlash in the form of “it doesn’t matter whether you intended to harm” is from folks who have had the difference weaponized against them, trying to dismiss their pain by appealing to intent. Lack of intent can’t be used to deny resultant harm.

  • @aserta

That's definitely not overthinking. One shop could be gipping you and just using putty on top of the paint and over spraying with cheap paint on top of that, while another could have a body guy who just pulls out their tools and starts slowly and methodically pulling every dent using suction, maybe some heat from a heatgun and patience. Sidenote, just find a guy who does independent work, is reputed to do good work and they'll likely pull all those dents out cleanly. To do this, first you have to establish if any of the strikes removed or cracked paint. That's the go/no-go filter for this affair. So pull up a good flashlight, pop in the evening just before the sun sets and start inspecting. If you want an idea of what this person is supposed to do look up (without the quotes) "PDR" videos (most videos on YT will show the proper procedure). PDR stands for "paintless dent removal". They'll use various tools, from glue to levers and suction cups to make magic happen. I've had it done before and i personally feel that finding that one dude (or dudette) that does good job in your area and supporting them is a better option. Good luck! And it's not overthiking. :)

Me, an overthinker: hell yeah But seriously, when I post on social media I try to say something meaningful. I hate jumping on bandwagons and saying the same thing everyone around me is saying-not because I necessarily disagree, but because my adding to it adds nothing to the conversation and only serves to, well, virtue signal. But it's not often that I have anything particularly important to contribute, so I don't share much. Of course, I don't make my living on the internet, so this isn't really a problem for me. But I thought I'd share my perspective anyway.

Joe, you hit the nail on the head. I am reminded every day that our generation has significantly different values than we do. Discipline, learning, and taking accountability for one’s actions has been replaced by a severe lack of respect for authority, relying on being able to Google the answers instead of retain knowledge, and blaming everyone else but themselves. Keep doing your part to educate the audience you’ve earned. Let the rest watch something else.

There's nothing worse than having a great idea or product idea, simply great & elegant the way it is, and either you or someone else saying 'Hey! Let's make it do this too!' or 'Wouldn't it be great if it'd slice bread for ya too?... Yeah... I feel your pain of overthinking, Brother. When I was in my teens we were all about shutting down bad people and using the internet to bring upon real justice to ones that had been getting away with it. But now it's like it's gone into overdrive, I'm always overthinking everything I post and I'm not even a creator. I'm 28 and I've already had words I've said shut down for fear of being too strong. I think the intention is great but at what point do we stop? Maybe we don't and maybe it's moving faster than ever as technology moves faster than ever. This deserves a whole podcast in itself... anyone want to start a podcast with me?

Extremely relatable. I am constantly plagued by ideas and thoughts that I want to actualize in some way, but it's the overthinking that overloads and prevents me from doing almost all of it. And for videos like this one and other TMI ones I've watched, I think there's a very high value in showing your person-ness. It's so easy to see creators and the like as flawless pillars of some sort, unable to see what is being struggled with or just how relatable their existence actually is. But I'm on the spectrum and overthinking is one half; the other half is being unable to shut up or find a stopping point. But I think some of that comes from the absence of thought delving in general life among most people and craving it. With the overwhelming mass of click-bait surface-thought content everywhere... it gets really hard to actually feel some connection and relatability to the world instead of only seeing ones own existence as an outlier. I've always been someone who sees small talk and casual existence as 'too easy'. I firmly believe exploring the nuances and details of just. being. human. is far too often ignored. I get it, thinking really hard about things whether it's intentional or not requires a lot of effort. And I agree with you on that sentiment; Isn't it better to put more thought into what you do? I do believe this is one of the best things for character development and self discovery, for further understanding the world and others, and to hone critical thinking and analysis skills. But I think this unspoken rule of not thinking so much is overly enforced by SO MANY SOCIETAL FACTORS, both ones controllable and uncontrollable. People being over worked, not getting cared for, not being educated well, not having any time for themselves to legitimately recover from just the daily stress of being alive. And as much as I love diving into topics and exploring it all and how much I believe that should be a normal practice in everyone's life, I don't see this changing any time soon. Shutting anyone down for having big thunks is a surface level thought/reaction and it's just to be expected. I just wish you and others felt safer about sharing the thinking side of things, because that's where I find comfort in being alive. I also believe this the jewel (or bane, if you prefer) of just being an intelligent human creature. Did I have a point or any sort of conclusion in that huge jumble of words? No idea, probably not. I know you were talking about more specific things regarding overthinking, but it just made me think of that concept in general. Anyway, I hope your own overthinking habits aren't too debilitating because boiiiiiii I sure do enjoy hearing your thoughts and seeing your creations. All of it certainly keeps me thinking, and sharing thinking about someone else's thinking makes thinking easier. I think

Thinking about something, takes the same amount of energy as actually doing it, but with added dissatisfaction and lower self-esteem. I have several regrets about overthinking something to the point of quitting, or fear of even starting them. My proudest moments are released in real-time, relying on my trusted intuition. Thankfully other people seem to remember them more as well. No matter how much time i spent overthinking, i am always limited by my current state of mind and environment. In contrast my gut reaction uses all of my life experience, and it is more objective and wider.

lol, I literally did the thing you're talking about in this video; typed an entire response, then deleted it because I started overthinking whether or not it was worthwhile, or "valuable", or whatever. But I'm retyping this anyway, because I appreciate you talking about the struggle. I find it so hard to get beyond the narrative that was shoved into my brain while growing up that I shouldn't show things to folks until they're ready (whatever that means), & that my actions are so much more important than my thoughts that I should only ever let the work do the talking. But it feels like there's such a deluge of content pouring in from all sides all of the time, so talking about the stuff I've been working on before, during, and after I've worked on it seems like the only way to give it any life beyond the time I've spent on it. And getting beyond that early life conditioning is Hard. Thanks for sharing, and reminding me that the lessons I was raised on aren't necessarily correct, or useful for the world as it is today. And for reminding me that people do want to follow along with other peoples' lives/experiences.

I've had a similar experience on social media in general, woth an arc that started 22 years ago on Live Journal. The more current chapter is easiest to dissect. When Instagram was new, we were real people sharing real life. I made friends there and have watched them and their kids grow up and go to college. As a course instructor in grad school, I filtered my presence because I feared my students might discover my private life. Years later, a violent stalker left me feeling afraid to be seen at all. Between those two experiences of being uncomfortably visible, I rarely share any publicly frank and unfiltered glimpse of who I am any more. I hear you, and it makes sense. Also, I so enjoy your content and brainmeats, I've long thought it would be fun to bump into you somewhere and raise a pint together among friends. So yea, if you want to share more unfiltered glimpses of your thoughts, opinions, and motivations, I'm for it. Honestly, I support whatever makes you feel heard and most comfortable.

Hi Joe. All of the things that you talk about in this narrative are things I love about your work. Overthinking can sometimes cause us to stray from our true values. Just be you because you’re great! (And based off your success, it’s working just fine)

Yeah i know that feeling. For me it sometimes goes as far as me having formulated something I think covers everything.. but then remembering that many people these day seemingly can't read more 100 characters before their brain starts acting. And they start reading stuff that isn't there.. and then complain about your post and when you're like "dude did you read the 3rd paragraph of my post?" And then they're often like convinced that i edited the post retrospectively .. even thou there is no (edited) marker.. So often I just don't post at all if I know i got better things to do than argue with somebody on that level. And I mean I even try to put in paragraphs to give some visual help to navigate my posts and try to cut the paragraph as short as possible.

With most of the people on the planet trying to be someone else, or project a presence that is not truly or inherently "them", I find someone who is unapologetically themselves (warts and all) to be a refreshing change. I find shock-jocks, click-bait generators and ïnfluencers repugnant on most levels. You should do more of these. As a philosophical person, I find sharing genuine considered opinions and encouraging others to share theirs (even on topics largely considered taboo), then considering the differences, allows me to develop a more expansive view or understanding of how we all perceive the world we live in.

In Germany there is a saying that translates to “talking is silver, keeping silent is gold” and also there is old Boetgius who said “Si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses”, pretty much the same thing. I completely agree with you, for me it is the same. I’m an ENFP, don’t want to be nailed to a misunderstood statement because I hate offending people :-)

My entire life I've been plagued by analysis paralysis. I read something once to the effect of "The people who achieve are not necessarily the smartest, or hardest working, or the luckiest, they just do." Every upward movement in my life has been a result of me just doing something rather than sitting there thinking about it.

That's why it's so important to keep up with what is happening in the world. I live in the Netherlands and have a subscription to 1 high quality news paper. I also follow tons of decent journalists. AND I follow dozens and dozens of researchers that do research on the topics I'm interested in. Because I'm super focussend on a specific topic it's easier to follow all the relevant scientists in that topic. Pro tip for Dutch people: FollowTheMoney, decorrespondent, and a couple other independent journalists are awesome.

I think those of us who want to create, who want to add something new to the world, something of value, also run the biggest risk of bottoming out, flatlining, overthinking and immobilizing themselves through that process. The effort I have to put into managing my own limp-dicking around, monitoring my flatlining tendencies and trying to stay ahead of that curve is often excruciating, frustrating and absolutely impossible to get a grip on. That is I think because our premise is one of perfection, and that quest for perfection is a major killjoy. That is why these seemingly effortless vlogs about the trivials in life are made with such ease. And I'm jumping to conclusions here, oversimplifying someone else's effort to express themselves, so maybe I owe _you, person_ an apology, but this verbal diarrhea doesn't require any second thought, just one simple idea, and the absence of any deeper thought or filter other than the Nike tag line _Just do it!_ And I agree with you, that is not what this medium is at its best at. I love your thought process, your contemplations, the research you put into your work, but I also missed some of these more off the cuff sort of outings like this one, so clearly I am wrong about most of what I just wrote, and the truth lies somewhere between the verbal diarrhea and the overthinking and debilitating perfectionism you and many more of us suffer from. *Good is good enough, your thoughts are welcomed by many, you are allowed to exist and to express yourself, you are of value, you need to be heard, and you do change the world. I say this to myself normally and now I say it to you. As an affirmation. Thank you for sharing!*

Joe, I enjoyed this a lot. Great insights on anger-mongers. About 15 years ago, I had a chance to get involved in pro musicianship. I’d been invited to practice a list of songs that a friend’s band was regularly covering, that would do well with the addition of sax or other horns, and I play a wind synth. One of those songs is very popular, but it has the stupidest lyrics. Tupelo Honey. Listening to it casually, I don’t mind it. Pretty, musically. But to play my solo part, I have to listen to the words to know when to come in. I started hating it more and more each time. Then I remembered how LATE those bar gigs tend to be, and I am NOT a night owl. I’m an early bird. And I hate crowds. And am annoyed by drunk dummies. There’s much I love about playing music with a talented band, & what I SHOULD have done was to put in the work necessary to find dinner music gigs with a smaller group, that would be wrapped up and headed home by 9 or 10pm, with very few drunks. But I overthought myself into lazy procrastination on that front.

Myself, I run a role play group, and that requires a lot of thought because just throwing one encounter after another at the party makes no sense, there has to be verisimilitude or else I feel cheap. So I think about it a lot and I think it pays off. Anyway, thank you for sharing your time with us in the well thought out way you do. Love you too dude.

I loved this! Warts and all! 😉 With age, I have gotten much better at not overthinking as much. I'm much better at leaving my comfort zone. In my 30s, I passed up an awesome opportunity for a job in San Francisco because I overthought it and asked for others' opinions. It's one of my regrets in life. It's also the thing that pushed me to do things that make me uncomfortable. I don't want life to pass me by. I want to live it to my fullest ability.

Joe! The world needs this video. I support free speech, but free speech doesn't mean we should piss people off and share every stupid thought. We need to take more responsibility for our thoughts and what we share, the same way that we need to take more responsibility of our own emotions and not blame others for how we feel. Thanks for being a voice of reason mate! You make my world more sane. 🙏
