How I built my DALEK! | Doctor Who
In this video I discuss how I built my full size Dalek! (Called Dalek Sigma). This is a huge project so I've tried to break it down into a watchable length video.
Credits:
Project Dalek. www.projectdalek.co.uk - Many of the members of this forum gave me advice throughout my build. They also have sets of Dalek plans available, which I used to build Sigma
Scarecrow Props. - For taking some of the photos used in this video
Dalek6388. - Their website was useful to research the history of the prop that I was recreating

As a childhood dream of mine, all your hard work has now been translated into 'A lucky man!'. Congrats on a beautiful Dalek (if those two words are ever used together to describe one) Hope your creation brings many many hours of joy, for both yourself and those witness to it.

This looks better than the ones they actually used in the 60s.

Damn, that's awesome, I went to MCM on the friday, I am guessing you did one of the weekend days, Would have been awesome to see Dalek Sigma in person, great video and what a cracker of a photo of you and sylvester, he's such a legend isnt he, i met him and paul on friday

Thanks! Yeah I bought Sigma to MCM on the Saturday, although next May ill be bringing it along for all three days! Its a fun photo of Sigma and Sylvester isn't it, I think he liked the build and was quite humorous about it all. Paul McGann seemed lovely too!
it looks great! I think you even did a good job with your old Davros chair, not many people can make something full-size from a show!

Beyond impressive! It's perfection. I'd love to make a Dalek but the closest I've got is heating up a Gino Ginelli pizza that looked a bit like a Kaled mutant with black olives on it. Early days. But seriously... any advice for a complete novice? I was shite at woodwork at school. Thanks mate, I'm totally in awe. Can't wait to see what you do next. Subbed! 👏👏

Haha! Honestly my advice would be to spend a bit of time before hand researching other builds and seeing what works for you, and then just taking your time, anyone can build a Dalek well if they spend the time to do the job well. And thanks, there should be much more stuff coming soon!

Thanks for sharing so much info in a manageably short video. I have dreamed of owning a full sized Dalek for many years, but your build is one of the first times that I ever really understood what would be involved. I like your choice of Dalek generation, as it is truly iconic. Cheers from Canada.

Thanks, I tried to share as much information as I could in a small video, so I’m glad to hear it’s understandable. And the 60s Daleks are just so iconic.

Ahh its a shame that you missed Sigma. Luckily ill be bringing it to MCM May next year for all three days, so if you're going you might see Sigma then!
Nice work! I too plan on doing a 60s prop at some point, albeit based on Dalek 1 rather than 7. I really adore the wooden gunboxes compared to the fiberglass ones, and it gives me an opportunity to have a go at the dilating Iris
@whopropsmodels9710

Oh cool, its a very fun build! And the original gunboxes are very nice, I quite like the shape of them. The dilating iris too is a really nice feature!

Maybe squeeze a camera into the eyestalk so you know where it's looking? One thing I've noticed in most of these is they rarely make eye contact with who they're talking to.

@@peytonmac1131 That's a very good idea, and I've seen some Daleks where that's been done. The difficulty is in getting the camera to hide away and not be visible in the eyestalk. But its a very good idea!

Seriously impressive work . Looks incredible . ❤
Awesome stuff! Way to make the *dream come true!*
this is amazing. I've wanted to build a dalek for years but it's just not feasible with the amount of tools and knowledge required
Nicely done mate! 🏆 Best wishes from a maker of movie armour and a man who was once a guest musician at BBC Wood Norton. Filming ran over that day, so I was invited to stay the night. It was whilst walking to the accomodation block that I realized... 'This is where they filmed Robot!'. So at 3am, when everyone was sleeping... I sneaked out and went looking around the open delapidated sheds for the Brain of Morbius, Dalek parts or model light-houses. I wouldn't have stolen anything... But I would have hated myself if I hadn't had a look! Best wishes from a man in a medieval ruin in a French forest and his lobster-clawed bio-mechanical man-servant! 🦞🤖🤫 Good luck with the channel... My favorite dalek too the only thing I would do is cover up the Phillips screw heads in the eye stalk & plunger
@whopropsmodels9710

I deliberately added the screws in the eyestalk because I personally like the way they look. The original props also had the bolt and washer holding the plunger in place.
Brilliant job! Well done!
Nicely done. I've genuinely never watched Dr Who but I've always wanted a full size dalek and tardis.
Very Nice build. I built a Genesis Dalek about 14 years back, but eventually had to sell it due to moving and not having the space. So now I build Virtual CGI Daleks instead. Love your Sixties build. Very good quality, you obviously put a lot of time and love into it, and it shows.

Like many - I'd love one, but you should see the replica Mac Classic I made in Woodwork class... 😯 Love that it's a specific Dalek, and not just an early era Dalek. Adds to the character, even though 99% of people who see it wouldn't have a clue...

Back in the mid 80's I could have bought a Dalek it was about 1.2metre tall, but it was expensive about $400 , back then I was an apprentice chef and that was nearly a month's wage, so I didn't buy it to this day Iam pissed off that I didn't get it.
this looks lovely! i’m interested in getting a modulator do you have the link for the one you got? i went to the project dalek store and the only thing i could find was a membership
@whopropsmodels9710

Hiya. Yeah to get the modulator you need to have an account and be an “active member”, which is a subscription that costs £5 a year. Once you're an active member you can get access to the “DVM8 support” section where you put your name on the list. I’m afraid I can’t provide a direct link to that, sorry!

They're incredibly cool to own. As for how much it cost, the answer is too much! Im yet to add up the full amount but I recon its somewhere in the region of £3000-£4000, so quite a lot! Ive also no idea how much its worth, I guess to find that out i'd have to sell it, and I'm not planning on doing that anytime soon.
Where did you get the dome lenses from?

@@whopropsmodels9710 what is the difference? I have the builders plans and It says Mk2, or were the M2's ,Mk1's with those dishes on their backs?
@whopropsmodels9710
Жыл бұрын
@@Helliconia54 Well the Mk1 props were the four originals used in "The Daleks". For the filming of "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" two new props were constructed, these are the MK2's. The original four props also got the dishes on their backs and the larger bases so they looked the same as the new props. Then there was one new Dalek constructed for "The Chase", this is the MK3, it had some notable differences to the other 6 existing TV props. Again, the other Mk1 and MK2 props had the upgrades made to them such as the slats added to the shoulders so all the props looked the same. If you're interested in the details I would highly recommend Dalek 6388 as they've done a load of research into this!
