I just found your channel and this video because I am researching for wich library to buy as a beginner. And man i have to say you are amazing. I even listened to some of you Music on spotify. I immideately knew after 10 minutes into the video, that you just feel music and its amazing to see how you actually make music with you entire body moving, even though your "just pressing keys" on the piano. Really good stuff. keep up the good work. thanks for the great video.

Based on your demonstration, I would use this to make quick mockups or as a layer to add low frequencies and details. Surprisingly, I think it would be great for softer and dramatic themes. The word Dramatic seems to be more appropriate than Epic.

Hi, this gives a nice overview of this library (and your nice setup as well, but jealous here). You mentioned you prefer more dedicated orchestral VST, allowing more control of the individual orchestration (placement, mics and more overall settings) My question to you is which products would be your top 3 for more the more dedicated libraries? What I think of your overview is that you explain and show the usefulness of this particular library very well, and not just dismiss it. It seems fun to use, and yet very capable of creating quick orchestrations, whilst still allowing it to sound full-bodied. Thank you 👍🏻

Yes as a career soundtrack composer- I bought it and NEVER USED IT. The strings sound like bad 90s DX7 strings with compression. All the sounds are unusable. Every other Albion I have found to be useful in its way and to have a massive array of unexpected gifts- This just synthy sounds trying so hard to be cinematic that they would fail basic screening due to the poor sound design. If you use this your demo WILL be skipped.

I can’t tell if I like it or not. The lows end are very good but the whole I don’t know, as user of many orchestral library like Metropolis Ark 1, Nucleus of Audio Impera or some banks of Heavyocity, Spitfire or Cinesample, I find it sounds Hybrid.. maybe I’m wrong and it’s video compression but well, I’m half Hype.. Maybe one day ill buy it to be sure but well, I think this is the 10th video I watch to know if I buy it or not 😂 but the idea is very good to be able to mix several orchestras with several rooms, this is very good, but so far I have never been disappointed by Spitfire and they remain in my favorite virtual orchestra library providers. And with the name of the library, I noticed that it can be very sensitive and play very low volume, which is ideal for creating background music. I think the library is ideal to overlay, mix with another library, to give intensity, but it alone to create something really epic I don’t think, only for background and atmosphere music

My opinion (useless btw): Years ago I had a Korg Triton and an 01/w MIDI'd together and Colussus sounds JUST LIKE IT and I'm not sure how to feel about that. Currently Colossus is $399 (US) but the entire EastWest Composer Cloud is $200 for a year's access to EVERYTHING. Also, did you see a way to alter the vibrato rate in Spitfire? Anyway, Colossus is cool, but my older gen keyboards sound just like it. Have you run Colossus through SuperVision yet?

Yeah no Trumpets. It's a bit weird because in some ways it feels like this is a replacement for Albion III. But then in other ways it isn't. For example, there are high strings and higher pitched Woodwinds but not in the brass. So.. shrug.. who knows. Over all the library sounds good but it feels like it wasn't fully thought through as to what it's purpose is and is not.

I have all the Albions and I'm not that impressed with this. One useful feature is the transition from a chamber sound to a larger orchestra. The woodwinds are nice and the percussion OK, but the brass and strings just don't do it for me. I would go to the Spitfire Iceni library for the low powerful stuff (not available anymore.) Also, the Spitfire player seem kind of clumsy when I would compare it to any of my Orchestral Tools that use their Sine player. Maybe it will grow on me, but time is precious.

To my ear, its claim to fame is its weakness. Sustained strings are programmed in a way they are never used irl, and sound like a synth pad. Of the libraries you have recently reviewed this is solidly at the bottom.

  • @DomSigalas

That’s why I make these videos so you can judge for yourself if a library is for you :) Funny that you say this about strings that sound like a synth pad. I’ve found that many people are no used to this sound - from an orchestrator’s point of view I prefer individual sessions like I say on the video but in my opinion this big section sound is something that people are accustomed to like lightly autotuned pop vocals ;)

I’m a soundtrack composer doing well. COLOSSUS WAS A COLOSSAL DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!! I find videos on it (hearing it through a phone or KZread) hide its total absolute tinker-toy sound. 1) It ALL sounds like a DX7 90s synth 2)the hyped function of increased size; I can’t even HEAR it 9:10 times. 3) the “big” sounds, aren’t. Get Zimmer if you want big strings get colossus if you want weird 16 bit synthy crap mixed with strings. 4) the instruments are crappy, the brass sounds like it is made of pewter , strings like Billy ocean 80s rock synth strings, woodwinds???, bunch of synths all lacklustre. 5) COLOSSAL cpu and ram hog which takes minutes to load and causes crashing in a top of the line system. (i8, 4Ghz, 128GB ram, 10TB storage, etc etc) The ONLY use this expensive library has EVER seen is ONCE I used an Evo from Colossus as a background ambience. That’s it. I REALLY REALLY wanted the Bernard Hermann toolkit but took the chance it wasn’t bs. Context: Professional composer as a career. LOVE AND ADORE SPITFIRE AND MOST OF THEIR PRODUCTS THIS IS THE ONLY TIME I IMMEDIATELY WANTED MY MONEY BACK. I’ve never used it and never will it sounds SO awful. Unusable it is so awful. You hear a sound and cringe!!! I KNOW IT DOESNT SEEM THAT WAY IN VIDEOS AND CANT EXPLAIN THIS. I’m using 64 but ASIO4ALL and great cans I still want my money back- $124 for gorgeous Loegria strings and enough for another Albion left over or upgrade my chamber to pro. I love spitfire they are my go to. They are usually awesome. Sometimes not awesome but this is the one time it’s absolute crap. I don’t know HOW they screwed up such a great idea And I REALLY don’t know why it sounds “ok” in demos but in person literally honestly sounds like a pocket sized 90s Casio keyboard with bossa nova settings etc. Just beware. My superpower and my main selling point is I CAN MAKE ANYTHING “WORK” (to a reasonable degree… give me a banjo, a bansuri, a kazoo and a toy piano and you’ll have a heartbreaking love song but this? Can’t do anything because every note is like a crappy 90s Casio keyboard peeping like a chick passed through dynamic amplification and compression to the point of just being bitcrushed ear knives. AWFUL DO NOT GET WILL NOT HELP

This is a good library for ideas and mockups but I do NOT recommend this as a first library at all. I don't think Epic or Colossus is an appropriate name. I think a better name would be something like Expression. If you already own a solid library, this is actually a good addition....especially for Albion owners. We get a big discount.
