    I attempted to attend WOFT back in 1985 under the High School to Flight School program. Passed the FAST test and Warrant Officer Board, only to be denied because of a vertical astigmatism that was "2 clicks" too far out of standard. Broken hearted, I decided to go Airborne Infantry Unassigned Ranger instead. Years later, as a Drill Sergeant, I found out during Summer Training for ROTC students, that if I had gone to OCS, I would have passed the standards for commissioned officer rotary wing pilot. Been retired now since 2002 and not sure what the standards are today, but keep this in mind if this is your dream and the same obstacle is put in front of you.

    Finding the right recruiter is probably the best advice in this video. Back in 1980 (the dark ages), I decided I would try for Army Aviation. The whole process was absolutely miserable. After I took the ASVAB, my recruiter called me and said "Well, you can have basically any job in the Army that you want that doesn't require a college degree (officer)." He already knew I wanted to go aviation so he set me up for the aviation aptitude test (what is now the SIFT). After I took the test, I waited, and waited, and waited. Finally he called and said "Bad news...you failed the test". Now, I had been an aviation buff for years...I knew a LOT about flying without having never actually flown. I knew the instruments, I knew the weather, etc. I told the recruiter "I have taken a LOT of test in my life...there is NO WAY I failed that test." He called me back a few days later and told me "I just found out that the scoring methods were changed....you passed the test". Next was the physical. I had some issues with vision, but the flight surgeon asked if was was planning on flying supersonic aircraft. I said no, so he signed off. I was scheduled for the Oral Review Board THE NEXT DAY....again, uninformed recruiters. After a 6 hour bus ride, I was told that my packet had not had time to reach the board and I would have to come back next month. A week later, I got a job offer that was too good to turn down, so I never went. I eventually got a Private Pilot license with a helicopter rating ( it cost me $12K and I never really got to make full use of it...). Having a knowledgeable recruiter is the most important thing you can do. Thanks for the video.

    Its been 40 years...I recall a lot of pics of HSI’s and other flight instruments and the question would be “What’s the aircraft doing?” A lot of spatial orientation questions involving dots and lines. Weather questions as well. That’s about all I can remember.

They’re looking to see if someone would be able to exploit your debts to be able to take advantage of your position in the Army. Mainly they’re looking at credit card debt.

    If you're in college or about to enter college, you can also check out the ROTC program. If there isn't one at your particular school, you can find one at another university and commute to the program. One reason why I recommend this is because ROTC is especially geared toward university students being groomed and trained to become commissioned officers. You'll get a look at leadership roles, team work and expectations. Some people enroll and then decide that military life isn't for them. There is no obligation until your senior year and you can apply for flight training at the end of your junior year. It's another avenue to explore.

    Great video. This is something I am considering when looking at my options as an Army Reservist (or possible return to active duty). I love aviation and have wanted to become involved with it more than a hobby. However...my age. I'm not young anymore. I'll be 50 when I begin jumping through these hoops. I can make it through the testing, boards, PT test, all of it, done it before. However, normally, guys my age have been considered too old. But I've two things that make it at least worthwhile to consider. 1. I see there is a shortage of pilots about, both civilian and military, which has the military willing to waive the age requirement for otherwise good candidates. 2. I'm prior service, in that I've 13 years in already, so I don't have nearly as far to go to retirement, so they've chunk of time they can avail themselves of my services, yet I can make retirement. So...is 50 too old or if I bust my ass, I can make it through this gauntlet?

    One thing to consider, most Army Aviators are type A personalities. As a Warrant Officer, you will be ordered to do very dangerous tasks and perform those tasks without hesitation. It takes a lot of courage and the ability to ignore fear while flying the aircraft, regardless of the treat. My flight class was 71-1. I have logged over 900 hours of combat in Vietnam. You will never be more alive than when you are in combat, often taking fire while flying, with your life and others' lives at stake. Very few of you will ever get the chance to become an Army Aviator. One other thing, you need an IQ of at least 140. Good luck and God bless.

  • @carlovarga8485

    @carlovarga8485

    5 жыл бұрын

    @trublu97 The 110 referred to the minimum ASVAB score for acceptance, not IQ. An IQ of 110 is marginally above mean, or average IQ for a given population, or a little higher than your IQ, I would guess 80 or so. As for your ability to understand what you read, well, not so much.

  • @carlovarga8485

    @carlovarga8485

    @trublu97 I graduated, WAR-WAC Class 71-1. First combat tour, Chu Lai, 1st Aviation Brigade, 116th AHC, call sign Hornets. Our Gun Platoon call sign was Stingers. The AO stretched from LZ English in the South of I Corp, on the coast to the DMZ, Qua Viet River. Me moved to Marble Mountain (DA Nang) when the 23rd ID, Americal Divion, stood down in October 1971. I flew UH1-H models, for over 900 hours of combat time. When the 116th stood down, I was transferred to the 62nd AC, call sign Royal Coachmen for the remainder of my tour. When returning home, I then went into the Reserves, transitioned into the OH58 A model, the AH-1F, Modernized Cobra, and the CH-47C, and D models. I flew D models in Operation Desert Storm, out of King Khalide Air Base, in 1990-1991. I retired from the Colorado Army National Guard, Buckley Air Force Base, in 1994 as a Senior Aviator, W-3. Why would I lie?

    Went through WOFT back in 1989. The Army is certainly willing to take an inter-service transfer from another service then one of their own. Why? The Army isn’t losing a body, but gaining a body. However, if it’s your dream or drive to fly then go for it. So couple of years enlisted in another service then one year of flight school as a WOC and then it’s been a lifetime of excitement and memories. Thirty years ago today I was on “tree status” and only two weeks from pinning my bar and wings. Holy crap time flies. It is A LOT of work to apply and earn a selection in Army Flight School as a Warrant, but it is and was worth every minute of that work. An unknown path is the National Guard. That’s a great path as well and has benefits similar and yet different to being on active duty. Check out both.

    Thank you, sir! This was helpful. However I am currently a student soldier medic in ait in fort Sam Houston. My recruiter was one that didn’t want to do all that extra work for me and convinced me to go for combat medic (still a great mos) my question is what does the process look like for applying for WOFT as enlisted? I know I have to wait at least 2 years until I can reclass but do you suspect my chances are higher due to my being in the army already?

    Some SIMPLE STUFF: (1) Some recruiters are total slackers. If you run into one of those types, RUN, DO NOT WALK away from him/her! When you find the right recruiter tell the him (or her) that you want ONLY flight school or you're out the door! (2) Pass all the tests with MAX or very close to MAX scores. (3) Pass the flight Physical. (4) Go to Flight School and graduate number one in your class while having a total ball! While you are at it, learn how to "play the game". That will be valuable to you for your entire Army career whether it be only your several year obligation or you stay till you can retire.. As you go through the years and the Army asks you to leave being a Warrant Officer and become a Commissioned Officer, DON'T DO IT! No fun at all--no respect, and you'll wind up mostly "flying a desk"! That all worked for me and became an IP of many kinds, flew many kinds of Helos and many kinds of airplanes and LOVED it! Instructing at Ft. Rucker was a total kick in the *ss and I REALLY like that! Only mistake I made was taking a commission.....hated flying a desk! Retired as soon as I could after I got my Master Wings----Otherwise if I had stayed a Warrant, I would have stayed until they threw me out!!

    Hey i’m very interested in becoming an WO, what did you get on the ASVAB and SIFT, because im nervous for the scores? And for the WOFT packet, i’ve been told that i need high ranking officers that are pilots or experienced WO pilots, what recommendations did you get, because i don’t know any pilots. Was the interview process difficult, where you go to a board and they interview you on the essay you write? what was the wash out rate for WO school and the schools leading up to flight training? How many tests were there throughout flight school, was it typically every week? Thanks in advance

    Dude good video. This and the Green Bagger videos have given me a lot of good info. I wanted to know what recruiting station you went through. I'm in Scottsdale and I want to try to narrow this program down (go ASU baby). 8 years prior service Navy E-6 and I'm 31 with a BA so I gotta start this process ASAP. Do you guys know if I will be a prior service guy or street to seat with a 1.5 year break in service?

  • @SVT4LYF

    @SVT4LYF

    5 жыл бұрын

    Spencer Hollen It’s the same exact process, street to seat is just a nickname for when civilians do the WOFT program. You will be considered a “prior service” guy however that doesn’t change the process at all other than just a couple more papers for the recruiter to process I.e. DD-214, statement of service etc. I was a prior service AM2 with a 3 year gap in service when I applied (and got picked up). You will LOVE the Army compared to the Navy by the way😉 Much more of a Team environment across the ranks than a Haze-fest Class system.

    I'm a Navy crewman on the MH-60S. Always wanted to be a pilot but dropped out of college. Knew about this program before I enlisted but was told I'd never make it... should of given it a shot. Now the Navy has gotten me way to dumb to become a pilot haha. Maybe I'll still give it a shot once my contract is done. God knows there's no way I'd go back to college and become a pilot in the Navy. Crazy to see you go street to seat like that, especially right into the Apache. Good luck out there, keep the bad guys' heads down for us!

    Prior Navy (enlisted) myself, and I’ve been through training here at Rucker with plenty of people of people who got picked up from all of the other branches while they were still Active duty enlisted.. Just put together a packet now! Also you don’t need a degree to get picked up so don’t let that scare you away.. Any credits towards a degree will look good though! If you don’t get picked up just drop a packet again when you get out. Just make sure you do really well on the SIFT first time up because you only get two opportunities to pass and the first time you pass that grade is locked in and you don’t get a second opportunity to score higher. With your Helicopter experience you should do pretty well, but the SIFT specific study guides really teach you how to take the TEST itself well. I skimmed through the guide one time right before I took the SIFT and it really helped out. Best of luck Shipmate! (P.S. the Army is so much more enjoyable than the Navy!!!)

I’m attempting to put out videos while in flight school here at Rucker so I don’t always have the time (as you already know) to ensure I have great quality videos about becoming a army pilot. I started my channel way back bc when I was doing my packet there was literally no info out there on becoming an army pilot except maybe a documentary from 1967 lol. But your videos have great info and quality so if you don’t mind I’ll leave a link to your channel on my upcoming videos.

    ag23100 It can all be accomplished with due diligence on your part and being proactive in about six month from the time you start talking to a recruiter until you ship to basic depending on how board dates line up etc. Yes you have to go to Basic training to become a Soldier first, then ship to Rucker for all the officer and Flight training before your first unit. You do have some control over which aircraft you get to fly, if you get top of your class on the order of merit list you should be able to pick any aircraft in the Army. If you had the lowest scores you get whatever is left after your classmates select. You will not be disappointed with your aircraft, all of them are awesome and have a unique mission set. You will learn to love it even if you hated it prior. I’ve seen several times that that was the case. You do get to do a dream sheet of where you want to get stationed however if there’s not a need for the Army where you want to go, you won’t get sent to your first pick. However you normally will get to go somewhere on your top 3 choices. If you really want to pick your Duty station and the aircraft your going to fly, go Army national guard in the State of your choice and get picked up that way😉. Retirement system is different than Active Duty and most of the slots are part time though.. However for some people that is perfect.👌

  • @jaredparson9206

    @jaredparson9206

    Your actual ASVAB score has nothing to do with the "110" score. The 110 is based off your GT score which is a score based off certain subjects within the ASVAB, which is, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension and arithmetic reasoning.

There's a decent amount of info about personnel already in the army wanting to transition, but almost no interservice information. Can you bridge this gap?
