How Do We Reboot Social Media? | Drew Benvie | TEDxBristol

Social media is one of the most dominant influences on modern society, and it has come out of nowhere. One million harmful accounts are deleted from social media every hour of every day, and this tidal wave of online harms is only just beginning. From being blamed for causing depression, spreading disinformation, for cyber-attacks or celebrity hacks, it’s getting a bad reputation and often seems out of control.
But where is it all coming from? How is social media really influencing us? And what can we do to stay safe? Can anything really save social media?
Drew Benvie believes we can, and the answers are at our fingertips. His TEDx talk explores both the more troubling elements of life in cyberspace as well as the practical things that we can all do to take back control of our social feeds, protect ourselves from harm, and enjoy a much more enriching and positive time online.
Regarded as one of the UK’s most well-respected social media practitioners, Drew’s online life started before the era of social media, as a blogger in the 1990s. He wrote the first page about social media on Wikipedia in 2006. Building his digital presence from his base in Bristol in the 2000s, and more recently as an advisor to global brands and figureheads, he splits his time between the UK and the US, geeking out over social media trends and data, and researching how social media is influencing the world around us.

We should be showing this in schools as part of the curriculum. A relatable, articulate guy who's done an awesome job in 15 minutes of explaining how deep the rabbit hole can go with social media and it's influence on all of us whether we like to accept it or not.

I definitely second that this should be shared in schools everywhere! As a teacher, trying to give guidance and information to students when this social media platform is all so new can be tough. These simple steps to understanding what to look for and how to recognise fake accounts is invaluable. Bravo Drew. A very interesting and informative Ted talk. Shared.

  • @DrewBenvie

Trolling behaviour should be reported, and if you report a troll's post or their account, social networks will review and could delete.

These actions are not simple, we must be warry all the time and try to diverse who we follow. In practice People have likes and dislikes, you cant expect someone to follow or join footbal group if they dont like it, you don't want to see posts you don't like right? Or post that is useless in which you will never want to read.
