How do Persons Maintain Their Identity? | Episode 511 | Closer To Truth

What does it mean to be a "self"? Look at an old photo. Then look in the mirror. Those two images are of the same person, right? How so? They don't look the same. Their memories are different. And virtually every atom is different. We feel unity across time, but is this solidified self an illusion? Featuring interviews with Colin McGinn, Susan Blackmore, Raymond Kurzweil, John Polkinghorne, and Peter van Inwagen.

What an exceptionally good quality show. From production values to fascinating content, you have excelled. Thank you. Near the end you speculated about how continuity might be achieved after the body's death. Consider what seems continuous from childhood to adulthood even though you already have experienced different bodies. If the information about you is implicitly recorded within the fields of the holographic universe, it's not irrational to imagine how that implicit information could initiate a new round of continuity when the conditions allowed for it. That's all, thanks. 👍

For me I just feel that the self is all that I really have access to. To imagine a world without the self doesn’t make any sense. Am I supposed to except that, “I” emerged from out of nowhere- eternal darkness- to find myself in an absurdly complex self aware human only to recede into eternal darkness again? That scenario would suggest simply nothing ultimately exists because my present awareness now will fade and can’t be retrieved. If you can’t accept that...the self seems to be a more fundamental thing than maybe even the universe we observe... I think the world we see the human body we are in is just the selfs attempt to reconcile a fundamental eternity.

The perfect duplicating machine is impossible for purely physical reasons: on the quantum level, information cannot be duplicated. It can be "teleported" - but that involves destroying the original. Here's a thought experiment. Suppose that instead of a duplicating machine we have two "teleportation machines". Machine (C) is classical. It injects nanobots into your body, scans every cell to the highest precision possible, just slightly short of the quantum uncertainty limits, and digitizes this information. The procedure is too invasive to be survivable, so it destroys the original, but it extracts enough information to create an almost perfect clone. Also, the information is classical (and digitized), so it can be stored on a huge hard drive and used to create as many clones as we want. Machine (Q) is quantum. It does the same on the level of the quantum state of every atom, and quantum-teleports the state into another body (or a quantum computer). It can't create many clones, and of course it also destroys the original, but it teleports its quantum state perfectly. Now, I'm inclined to believe that (C) certainly kills people and (Q) probably doesn't (it depends on how good it is, so I'm assuming it's perfect). I don't know how to phrase this belief in terms of externally observable phenomena, or how to make it falsifiable. But the point is that I might consider stepping willingly into (Q), but never into (C).

Sue Blackmore's ideas reveal a belief system behind her words. She imagines that she has it right -- the "the universe is doing its stuff" -- but what does that really mean? It can free me if I 'believe' what Sue Blackmore has imagined. But, isn't the self really a mystery? Maybe the question to ask, is - "who we really are is something much deeper within our humanity that transcends this idea of a self at the superficial level? " The life we experience -- maybe it can be called our Aliveness -- experientially this is very real, is it not?. And our 'identity' may be within our deep humanity -- something that 'bubbles up' from the Aliveness we express through our engagement with life. When I say 'life,' I mean life at a deep level, not just having a sandwich or playing golf. I mean the Life that is profoundly 'behind,' if you will, our superficial experiences about 'living a life.'

There can be no illusion without observer. Mirage doesn't exist in a desert if there are no observers to be fooled by it. In your discussion with Ray Kurzweil, when you made the clone example, I think you ignored an essential point: you and your clone are at a different location in spacetime. You are here and your clone is 2 meters to the left. You are not "the same" - you both get different inputs. As soon as you create your clone, you will be different and stimulated differently by different inputs and quantum fluctuations (if you really want to go that far) simply because you're located at a different point in spacetime. So you won't actually be "identical" - you'll immediately branch as different beings.

_Definitely_ one of the better, if not among the best, CTT episodes imo, and this is why I am such a fan (though sometimes a critical one) of this show. The pursuit of the self is one of my favorite predilections, and I've spent many an hour pondering it's implications. I do think the self exists, because I believe very strongly in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the idea of rights requires an individual self as a sort of scaffolding. Personally, the idea that the self is the integral of the function of all of our individual experiences resonates with me. I'm still learning, though. Also, Daniel Dennet's "Where Am I?" immediately comes to mind as yet another very interesting take on this question.

"And virtually every atom is different." What does it mean? That is just hardware. There is difference between Software and Hardware, and only Software determines a person. You can replace a body, but identity is determined by his mind, that is, by his software. His software is determined by 1. his memories 2. his performance: how his mind reacts in a present situation.

  • @thriceconcussed1

    @thriceconcussed1

If that's the case, then wouldn't you be able to generate two people, simultaneously, with one person's memories? Wouldn't you then have two identical people? How could two people have one personal identity? Since the spatial differences between two objects with subjective awareness would result in those two people having divergent, non-identical perceptions, you would once again lose the concept of personal identity. A body is necessarily part of an agent's personal identity.

I don’t hear anyone ever discuss the problems of physical feedback from bodies. If you copied your computer to mine, you couldn’t operate as I do, because I have various devices that you do not, etc. So you say, well, I can get those devices. But not with biological bodies. If they could copy my “mind” into Michael Jordan’s body, I would immediately start to become a different person. I may maintain a sense of self, but that sense would be wrong, because I would drastically change. This is why I don’t think that we can ever download into a computer or if we did our sense of self would not go with it and it would immediately be computer/me. The biofeedback effects the self and our sense of self is to a large degree illusion. We are definitely not spirits in a body and do not have souls, let’s not be ridiculous. And you kind have to be mental to want to live forever anyway…

The guy from Norte dame, Peter I believe was his name is another one that made no sense in the end when he said something ( physical ) survives the death of the body that God can use to resurrect a person. But when a person dies there is no physical element that doesn’t decay and goes back to dirt. He contradicted himself. Listening to his arguments, I would find it more feasible to think the something is immaterial since all material things obviously decay back to earth elements. There is no bare caucus to be found surviving on a corpse. It all decomposes, so I don’t know what on earth he’s talking about. I’ve listen to many of closer to truth guest about this subject and it seems to me dualism is the most plausible explanation though many of his guest refute it. What could be left to resurrect if that something that makes us isn’t immaterial? This is basically another way of discussing what many scientist refer to as the( Hard Problem) of brain producing consciousness.

Exactly, cells die and regenerate all the time so we are not the same body we were 20 years ago. To go even deeper, the true self is animating the body with our souls/ consciousness. In a sense we are renting our bodies the way one would rent a vehicle, in order to participate in the experience we call life. When I hear people getting all bent out of shape over transgender issues, it makes me laugh in a way. Everything in these times we are living in, is pointing humanity in the direction of this realization, that the self is immaterial. We need to stop taking life so seriously and just enjoy living it to the fullest because the game eventually does come to an end and we will one day leave the material world with the body behind, like shedding a cloak. This realization is also the answer to all of the problems in the world. Btw, machines can never and will never equal human consciousness it's impossible. A machine will never have the capability of a central nervous system akin to that of a human being, with pain and pleasure receptors physical and nonphysical, nor a conscience.

Nothing else really matters, just the beauty of the planet, life, existence, consciousness itself. Self is identified in spirit -- thyself(true self) -- anything other is only ego: personal self -- which you would identify with labels, status, belongings to what country, culture and upbringing you've had. In truth that's not really who you are. I value truth, justice, light, energy -- I resonant with these qualities; as i have the same qualities within. @@rotorblade9508 you replied to my comment stating that freewill doesn't exist, and here you say it probably doesn't because it hasn't be proven yet. Treating opinions as if factual... Your ideology is similar to: guilty until proven innocent. As you believe only what you can comprehend, so to prove, and discarding everything you cannot, so ignoring. A true man of science doesn't say, " it's nonsense because there's no evidence". Rather a man who seeks answers is an expoditionist and never positions himself in the comfort of any such evidence. Or else the Wright brothers would have never gotten off the ground. To say there's no freewill when you have the ability to utilize your "will" and having limited restriction of choices, so creating your experiences in this reality is.... freewill. Freewill in thought, choices, decision, actions, imagination, experiences. If Billy only knows of a 26 color spectrum and his favorite color is blue. Good for him. If Billy increases his awareness in consciousness to the 26,000 color spectrum, he now has less limited restriction of choice. Even if his next choice of favorite color is influenced by his subconscious pattern from the 26 colors, he still has more freedom of choice. Why should one act like there isn't freewill when it hasn't be proven? In that action alone -- freewill doesn't exist.

Whatever method you imagine to "duplicate" someone, it will still be an act of creating a new and different entity, that might (erronously) remember the same past, but does not share it. The history/timeline of the original goes beyond the moment of creation of the clone, the history/timeline of the clone starts with its creation. Unless there is a new law introduced, that is specific to this process of duplication, property rights of the original would not be altered. As to the question of punishment,... what is the purpose of punishment? Is it a sacrificial act to restore a harmed balance of "justice" or does it have an educational purpose? If the clone is likely to commit crimes out of a feeling of having gotten away scot-free, it seems reasonable to sanction him according to his memory, not his history. Whether this sanction is concieved as punishment or as a corrective intervention would be a semantic distinction without a difference. And, also, the action of someone who willingly creates a likely criminal clone should also be regarded as reckless at best.

It's not the person who changes, it's the methods of identification. Each copy would only be the same for an instant and then would diverge. Every now is discreet. Continuity is function of memory and projection into future nows. Gives sense of coherent self over perceived time constantly changing. Patterns persist over nows flowing seamlessly. Comes down to processing information accessed by conscious awareness. Computers have memories you can refer to to update your changing memory that forgets and often misinterprets.

There are many layers and dimensions to whatever reality is. We perceive only a thin part of it with our limited daily senses. There are overlapping substrates of experience with different bodies making up a person at those various vibrations. These bodies have parallel existences. This current earthly pattern of a person is but one such a body. These patterns can be expressed on various substrates, if the substrate is sufficiently complex and of the correct vibration for that layer of reality. This earthly pattern and its experiences and memories most definitely continues to exist in some form beyond body-death. This is something one can even partly experience and have a taste of during lucid OBEs, NDEs, responsible psychedelic use and various other meditatively induced exploration phenomena.

Hi Robert. For me there is no problem to start with in the first place concerning this question. I think that my self is more than just my brain or some strange thing existing in my brain or in my thoughts to be more exactly. I instead think that an essential component of my self is the information which builds up my body and in order to do so needs to be adaptive to the changes of the environment my body inhabits... ( which in doing so also become a part of me or at least get a chance to do so. ) I think of my self as the realisation of a "blueprint" which was and still is crafted in countless iterations over time. So I think my heart doing it's thing is also a part of me as my liver doing it's thing... and so on. I think even my brain is somtimes doing it's thing in ways I'm able to enjoy. I also think that "the resurection of the self" is realized in the most efficient way nature is capable of doing it... by passing your genes to the next generation. ... Please try not to reduce yourself into less than what is necessary in order to understand yourself... and please do not try to tell me that the whole thing is more than the sum of it's parts until you realy counted all of them (8) Greetings and a pleasant time!

NTS 9/u incomplete The self does exist, it is a signed and continuously chained arrangement of information states which the brain is the underlying substance which is carbon based and it does account as information, information about the information media itself holding all piece of intimation stares together. Yes it could be fully reconstructed if the intimation paradox is not a paradox at all and information is never lost: both non material non carbon based information which signs the self, which is the specific information arrangement plus the material brain carbon based substance which holds the information can theoretically be rearranged although it can not be under classic physics due to second law of thermodynamics but that’s not a problem at all for God while for men it could only be a technological problem (practical problem), in theory this is the 5th option missing in Robert’s summary and still it accounts for a divine soul which is the miracle outing it all together now or in the future when it will be rearranged back to given state. Yet this divine soul can also be dismissed by non believers as long as their leap of faith goes on a different direction: the faith in a complete and consistent theory of physical and mathematical universe (it’s a huge faith as it accounts for Gödel and Heisenberg both being wrong)

The self is just a thought. And to come to this recognition, all you have to do is spend some time looking for it. Try and seek out the seat of attention, this thing I call I, where is it? A sage once said “You don’t finish self enquiry, the enquiry finishes you.” This self enquiry is the key to discovering the true nature of your mind and the complete realisation of what you really are. Consciousness itself. In the West we’ve been taught duality throughout our lives which is reinforced through our language. Conditioning has made you this way. Take the notion of being born, we give it a date and a time and say that’s me I was born then. But what if you asked yourself “when did I begin?”. Not so easy to define now! Maybe you were the ugly glint in your fathers eye when he laid eyes on your mother. Maybe that was you too.
