How Do I Overcome Self-criticism of My Appearance?

As we age we have the opportunity to discover our deeper essence beyond the body and express our inner beauty, explains Eckhart. We are all subject to the effect of time and the changes in the body, but we do not need to become "ugly" in the process.

There must be something really wrong with me because I have no "dreams" or "goals" to DO SOMETHING. I harbor no delusion that I am destined to "make my mark on the world". The world doesn't need me. And the feeling is mutual.

People's feelings about how they look have much more to do with what's going on in their minds, than the actual state of their body and dress. Issues include fear of aging and death, fear of rejection, need to feel attractive or at least socially acceptable to others. The key issue here is judgement. We judge others based on their appearance just as we judge ourselves. So much of this judgement is learned behaviour in a youth oriented society. I am almost Eckhart's age. I see myself aging, and frankly I hate it. I see my father when I look in the mirror. It's kind of funny I guess. But if others don't like how I look, that is their problem. This society bases so much on appearances. But what is more important than our appearance is our connection with the world. With today's connectivity, this is not difficult to do at any age, or physical condition. It does require knowing your way around the internet, however. Ask yourself: do you expect everyone in your life to look beautiful, forever? Why would you expect this of yourself? If a loved one suddenly lost their looks, would you still love them? If you are not sure, then you do not really love them. And: why do you care what others think? Why is it important that you look at least as good, if not better than other people? Is this a competition?

Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I have a son who suffers from schizophrenia and he is incarcerated. He has begun to recognize the importance of meditation and breathing exercises. It calms his negative thoughts. He read your book The Power of Now and began to understand suffering and how to find joy in the environment he lives now. He is very bright person but very fearful. l hope he will continue searching for the light in the darkness. Is there a book which could help him understand fear and be free from it. You are in this world because we need you,

I only feel ugly when I look in the mirror. And I only feel beautiful when I look in the mirror. Sometimes I think I look ugly and then I catch my reflection and I see I look beautiful. Sometimes I think I look good and I catch my reflection and I see that I do not. It is all relative. Our body is the apparatus which allows us to process information. Be grateful that it works. Everything.else is just vanity and a waste of time. Not saying that you do not need to present yourself well, that is about self respect and respect for what others have to look at. Once someone speaks, they become ugly or beautiful. Depends on what you say and what you do.

A lot of the smartest introverts I know blink while thinking and letting words come to them slowly. It can be a sign of what we label high intelligence. A certain type of intelligence. People like Robin Williams have lightning fast minds but can also be very pensive and deep. It takes all forms. I'm glad we are all different and yet so much the same on a deep level.

Worries about looks and intelligence only because we care about other people's opinions. They key to happiness is to free ourselves completely from good opinions of other people. This is of course not easy and something that one has to master. As far as worries about being relevant as we age and lose our IQ's, a lot of that is also because we care about what other people think of our capabilities. Forget about their opinions of about that also. We should focus on keeping our mind as sharp as we can for as long as we can for our own benefits and what we can do for the world. And beyond intelligence, there is always something meaningful that we can do to live a purpose life until our last day. That could be passing our wisdom, being kind, planting flowers, sweeping our street corner (no, there is no shame in that). We can even keep our minds sharp and do more complex work until our last day. We need to free ourselves of the negative societal judgments and expectations and our own negative beliefs as we age.

I am in my 60's. Aging is pretty awful. But I don't like the alternative! I was beautiful in a "model" like way but now I'm not!🤣 I don't really dwell on that, but find it quite therapeutic to do little things that halt back the clock in a superficial way. Make-up is fun! For men and women. I needed to hear this video. Eckhart has changed my life.

mloc m Some drugs are bullshit highs because they are dirty ugly non spiritual ones. However things like shrooms aren’t. Ahuasca I am not ready for but for extreme depression in some it seems to work wonders. They aren’t party drugs like meth or dirty stomped soul killing heroin. They are spiritual teachers connecting us to the Divine or to help us connect to truths we need to hear etc. Shrooms did wonders for me. I wish I could take them more! Only did it twice.

Many people have had extraordinarily vivid experiences but remained selfish pricks for the rest of their lives. Some have experienced simple yet profound unconditional love and union with life and responded to that so fully that their entire personality and values were transformed. Long story short, I think the value and validity is not so much about the content of the experience, but rather how fully we respond to it.

I’m only 36, so I know I shouldn’t be so worried about aging. But I do very much feel ugly, stupid and worthless and more so with each passing year. My own “flawless inescapable logic” tells me this is a reasonable deduction based on all of the rejection I’ve experienced and having been unwillingly single for the majority of my adult life. But while I’ve been convinced I’m right and have felt very hopeless at times I am also open to hearing other opinions and solutions. Tolle’s speeches are very interesting to me. I’d welcome any suggestions on this topic!

Here’s a piece of advice. Accept that life is unfair, cruel, full of suffering, and over much too quickly. A raw deal for sure. And that people are selfish, and pretty rotten generally- with a few moments of kindness and empathy for others sprinkled in during extraordinary times. The only thing that makes sense to me is to try and learn how to deal with that fact with a sense of dignity grace and humanity. Also, build a better reputation with yourself by imagining that you are a friend to yourself. I doubt you would be so critical of a friend the way you are to yourself. How would you behave each day if you liked yourself? What would you do, what would you not do..

Keep meditating and listening to talks until you are awakened. Once awakened, the power of presence will carry you through to full enlightenment. What you are experiencing is the pain of living within the ego, experiencing the conflict of this constricted state as it fights against being awakened by presence. Some excellent teachers to look into are: Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield, Ram Dass, Adyashanti, and Alan Watts. They all have excellent audiobooks on Audible.com. Have faith - you have found the right path, but now you need to walk it all the way to freedom. I wish you well.

I find balance between ego (representing perfection and control) and presence/inner self (representing isness and acceptance), to be very difficult to achieve. Part of me wants to root out ego from my life entirely, but that in of itself is not acceptance of what is 😊 In the example of the makeup; if you do choose to wear it to look more youthful, you are in fact not accepting what is, but on the other hand, you go crazy if you overthink everything. And then you accept the imperfection of the human condition, the difficulty to balance all moving parts. But how then does enlightenment fit in to all of this if we allow ourselves mindfully, to be controlled by the ego?

Ive been practicing eckharts teachings for a while now, he’s helped me no end! What I’ve found recently however as I am now becoming aware of my thoughts and how he ego operates my thoughts seem to be even more prominent (this is probably due to me not being aware of them before) and I feel I’m actually thinking more as a result of this, anyone else have this? What is the next stage from here?

War Bastard Hi, it's not that you are thinking more, you are just now aware of how much thinking happens, the next step is to relax. What you resists, persists. Don't be in resistance, I think Byron Katie will be good for you (her and Tolle are freinds). 95% of humans don't even know they are not their thoughts. Give yourself a break, Dear One. 💖💫💕👑🐳🦉💖💫💕

For me it is very helpful to look at the thoughts and ask myself, as eckhart recommends, "do i want this?". If you are still identified with the thoughts you will notice that a part of you indeed does not want to let go of them even if they are harmful and useless.

As Byron Katie would say : "But other than your thinking and believing you are ok,aren't you?" Every stressful thought is a FALSE thought!

This is a great talk, but the title should be changed. This is more about how to accept getting older, rather than about being ugly or self-criticism of one's appearance.

I think every gab in speaking and his slow speaking is that what makes the depth. It touches my soul. I would suggest to slow it on 0.75 and be present with yourself. Thank you. Best wishes . Paul
