I think it's not that surprising due to the orthodox christian connection. Going back way further, Ethiopian (axumite back then) kingdoms also had friendly relations with the Byzantine Empire, which the Russian empire considered itself the heir to.

Although they are both called "Orthodox Churces" the Ethiopian and Russian (Eastern Othodox Church) have very different origins in different times, and different dogmas. So actually there is not a religious link between them that takes them apart from the Latin (Catholic) Church. The Russian support was basically a matter of geopolitics.

  • @Dragons_Armory

It sure is but apparently they unironically celebrated the Ethiopians at a time where most of western Europe were becoming more nationalist. Also, it's coming from the Russian Empire, who at the time presided over a bunch of Muslims and Mongoloid peoples. It might be weird but I find it somewhat amusing the Russians was celebrating the Ethiopians. I think it lies somewhere between reale politic and genuine celebration of the little guy without too much self scrutiny. Regardless it's kind of charming.

It is definitely interesting how Russia tried to play a role in Africa as well and that would be also interesting to go deeper on that. But I think that Tzar Nicholas and its ministers were actually totally in the real politik mindset here. They were supporting the rising star in the complex Ethiopian political landscape of that time, Menelik, and this was bad not just for Italy: a stronger Ethiopia was also quite unpleasant for the British Empire, the main competitor for Russia on the global scene at the time. And as for the Italians... with prime minister Francesco Crispi they cut their good relations with France (Russian ally) and moved to an alliance with Germany (definitely not a Russian ally...) so there was nothing wrong if in the process they ended up with some Russian lead in their guts. In any case I totally agree that Ethiopia's history is totally fascinating...that would deserve so much more attention

They invaded before and culd never take Ethiopia.. so they Cheated & committed war crimes. They used HUNDREDS of bombers and bombed farms as well as cities.. their tactic was to stop Ethiopia's Production capabilities... Those bombs and chemicals poisoned the land for YEARS and created famine well into the 80's & 90's... Remember those "Save the Children" commercials with the skinny starving kids? THAT was the famine created by those bombs. So by THOSE standards, considering they had 30 years to build after recovering barely 60% of its production capacity from the war, famine & resulting chaos. I'd say Ethiopia is doing VERY well and there are great things in its future because it has LOTS of resources & Great ports.. aaaand its in great trading distance from Opec. Like i said gotta read more then just american news and american history books to REALLY know what is going on in the world.. america is not unlike china Less restricted but still restricted.

In Italy's defence... The Italians had many factors playing against them: 1 - Ethiopia must have clearly seen an invasion coming, being the only African country outside of European control. Hence the good military preparation. 2 - Ethiopia was a proper country, not a tribal territory like most of Africa. That made the aforementioned preparation possible. 3 - Italy had only recently unified, making it impossible to anticipate the invasion (and Ethiopian military preparation). It also couldn't have waited much longer, as it would have either lost Eritrea and Somalia to Ethiopia, or Ethiopia to another European power.

You did it here only at one spot at the beginning part of the story, but it shows you've done your research about the costumes and images of the Ethiopian warriors and people's clothes. 1:21 The Ethiopian Empire existed for over 3,200 years of recorded history through different names. Not 600. Saba/Sabeans, Habesha, Axumite, Abyssinia/Ethiopia are the same exact empires, just a name change.

  • @bimbi.entertainment

Saba is the name of the ancestor of the people of today's north Ethiopia (Amhara, Gurage, Tigray, Eritrean Tigray, etc.) and the people of Yemen. The center of Sabean civilization was in Yemen then moved/branched out to today's Ethiopia. After the then Kushite civilization (today's Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nubians/Sudan), the Sabean civilization settled in specifically dominating the northern Ethiopia territories. There's castle of Saba in Axum, which is in Ethiopia still today very visible in half-ruins. People confuse Saba to mean the name of a queen but the queen's name is Makeda. She was the "Queen of the Sheba/Sabeans", meaning the people. You can find an abundance of written history in Axum city to this day in many museums and openly visible monuments at historical/archeological sites. You can also refer to the Kebra Negest/Glory of the Kings. An Ethiopian book explaining epically important moments of Ethiopian history and civilization.

  • @SarahData

    @SarahData

@Mark Donald Wow, the same passion that your are displaying in response to someone "trash talking" your ancestors, is the same passion everyone feels about their ancestors. Sure I'm not responsible for any wrongs my ancestor committed (there is a lot they did) and I would be upset if anyone else insinuate otherwise, since I don't agree with the things my ancestors did. And my ancestors did them, just because they could and had the upper hand. However, the people who feel their ancestors were persecuted or unfairly decimated by a stronger power, just because that power could, they also have the same passion about the perceived harm on their ancestors and will also feel that they must honor their ancestors suffering. As much as you don't think you benefited from your ancestors actions, the people who today start out life at a disadvantage also want to believe that it isn't because their ancestors were bad that they are starting off behind. This applies to everyone, weather it is WW2, colonialism, Rwandan genocide etc.... There is no right or wrong here, because it is the most human instinct to defend our ancestors, our self perception and forward movement of the human species is not possible if we believe we don't come from something great. So no matter what our ancestors roles were in the past, we will find a way to somehow make sense of it and a way to live with ourselves. Weather we think they were villains or victims of some historical event, it affects our self perception. This is why you see people in the US fighting for posthumous military honors, exoneration from false judgement etc... It matters in a weird way if my ancestors didn't get the purple heart he deserved etc. Also, foreign aid is basically never seen by the people of these countries. It is used by foreign countries to control and corrupt the leaders of poor and disempowered people. The best thing you can do is advocate for your country to stop giving aid(bribes).

@Persian Lion well… TPLF was not started in Addis, EPLF was. TPLF was established in Dedebit Tigray, after a tiresome indoctrination by their master in Nakfa. This was a tactical alliance to weaken the central government. EPLF took on this mission from Egypt. This now extends to target Oromo political forces including the indoctrination you rightly stated here. You said, Menilik handed Eritrea over to Italia, well… that again is not true. How many Eritrean mercenaries do you think Menilik had to fight to remain a legitimate state? I will leave it for you to internalize. Regarding independent state of Tigray… I salute you for that! Truly! Let alone Tigray, Eritrea moved quarter a century backwards after the Egyptian motivated independence. Kudos to independent Tigray! Tigrean political forces under TPLF wanted to sell the people of Tigray much as their master EPLF did, in effect, sold out the people of Eritrea. The end, the historical incarnation of Egyptian mercenary role prevails. Amhara has already seen that project Ethiopia is a round peg in square hole, busy setting up institutional mechanisms for independent Amhara!

Yes, Ethiopia was never fully colonized by a European power, but it did experience a brief period of Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941. The Italian invasion of Ethiopia, also known as the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, was a colonial war that was fought between the armed forces of the Kingdom of Italy and the Ethiopian Empire. The war ended with the defeat of Italy and the restoration of Ethiopian independence. Before the Italian occupation, Ethiopia had successfully resisted attempts at colonization by European powers. This is often attributed to the leadership of Emperor Menelik II, who modernized the Ethiopian army and successfully defeated Italian attempts at colonization in 1896 at the Battle of Adwa.

On the contrary, the flying of the Red, Green and Yellow colors by several African countries wasn't in commemoration of the Ethiopian flag. Those colors which stand for the identity of the Rastafarian doctrine to which the late Emperor Haile Selassie was a strong believer, accidentally concided with color of the Ethiopian's flag. Nations that you see nowadays flying those colors are simply telling you their love for the Rastafarian doctrine.

The Ethiopians are no amateurs in war, they had their fair share in battles. The Italians and Ethiopians have had wars since Biblical times. The Roman empire Augustus and Axumite Ethiopian empire Ezana/Sheba were both elite power houses in the world.

Eryka Jackson exactly. Italian we’re not provoked. They just got up under the leadership of a bigoted leader and then went on a killing spree in Africa (Ethiopia). Then some ignorant fool makes a video , labels it as “why the Italians lost to Ethiopia “as though they were right in their bloodbath and had to win. Stop this it’s unfair. If your country had been attacked and racially victimised you wouldn’t do , think or even say this

The way this guy speaks on the video just show he is full of himself, and he can only tell the story on the western perspective, calling Ethiopians primitive! He has no clue.

Jonathan Williams they did actually, until the dictator government called derg started targeting all the educated citizens. approximately more than 1 milion students were intentionally murdered so that they wouldn't criticize dictatorship using democracy. haile selassie sent more than 100 000 ethiopian students across the world so that they can one day come back and build their country which they did only to be slaughtered by derg.

Jonathan Williams They would have done that if communist derg hadn't dethroned Haile Selassie in a coup and killed him afterwards. He was going to undertake land reforms and dismantle the fiefdom in Ethiopia and this didn't go down with some aristocrats so they deposed him. Look how that turned out for Ethiopia
