Why did Italy attack Ethiopia in 1935?

Why did Italy attack Ethiopia in 1935?
The incursion by Italian troops into Africa became known as the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, or the Second Italo-Abyssinian War, as it was named at the time. The conflict came without warning and was accompanied by no declaration of war. Rather, at 5 A.M. on October 3, 1935, Marshal Emilio De Bono led 200,000 Italian Army men into Ethiopia from the neighboring Italian territory of Eritrea. Simultaneously, a smaller chunk of troops was led by General Rodolfo Graziani from Italian Somaliland.

First great Aryan Hunter and Conqueror was Ninus. He led one of first invasions into Dravidian India, place inhabitated by black people. His people then settled in north India and thats where white indians come from. Ofcourse there were mixed marriages later and they intermingled with one another. The caste system that still exists to this day in India actualy comes from that Aryan tradition.

Black US pilot John Charles Robinson, one of the people behind the formation of the pilot school at the Tuskegee Institute that led to the formation of the "Tuskegee Airmen", offered his services to Ethiopia when it came under threat from Italy. He was granted a commission by the Emperor and eventually was made head of their very small Air Force, until he left after the Italian victory. When Ethiopia regained its freedom he returned, and was instrumental in the formation of the national carrier Ethiopian Air Lines, one of the safest airlines.

If the money they spend in their colonial adventures, would have been spend in the modernisation of their army (not only the material, I mean training and adquisition of modern warfaretactics and knowledge for their officers), the Italian army would have made a much better performance in WWII. Luckily they did not, and performed mostly as an anchor for the axis capacities. Just imagine, if they could have began the war with several divisions like the "Ariete" ( armed with tanks and tacticts that could match a german motorized division), and with one ore even two functional aircraft-carrier groups, including the capacity to launch (small) amphibious assaults, and the aricraft, (modern and in enough numbers) to dominate the central mediterranean...... that would have been totaly another scenario.....

Ethiopia's biggest mistake was quite simple: Laziness. Emperor Haile Selassie, despite being surrounded by colonial powers, didn't modernize his armies. This video showed how the Ethiopians failed to push the Italians from the northern front due to, simply, superior technology (Mustard gas, more planes, more tanks and more machine guns etc.) from Italy. King Menelik II and Yohannes IV were the ones who didn't make the same mistake and succeeded in defeating world powers, but Haile Selassie for some reason did not learn from this. He was quite egoistical and made dumb decisions (which resulted in his humiliating end...), but this was probably one of the greatest blunders in Haile Selassie's and Ethiopia's history.

Nice doc but a critique: My issue with videos like these is that it doesn’t at all point to the fact that the arbenoch (Ethiopian Patriots/guerilla fighters) made sure that Italy only had control of the urban centers and nothing more. In fact, Italy was hemorrhaging money due to their occupation of Ethiopia. This is a factor never brought up when it comes to how Fascist Italy gradually became a weakened ally for Hitler. But the ET campaign as well as the campaign in Spain were very important occurrences. My grandfather and great grandfather were a part of that resistance and I wouldn’t exist had Italy had such an easy time as videos like these would like to suggest. It’s just funny to me, when Europe was occupied everyone is reminded of how there were resistance movements but somehow an ancient Black kingdom that knows its own rugged lands were unable to mount resistance. Yeah right, next yall gon tell me Vietnam and Afghanistan were resounding successes.

Thanks Yonathan. I'm currently reading Insurgent Empire, by Priyamamvada Gopal. Popular history suggests that liberation was due to the paternal grace of colonial authority, whereas Gopal contends that resistance to colonialism was lead by the native people. The invasion of Ethiopia occurred around the same time of a series of strikes in the West Indies. Violence was used by the British to suppress such dissent. I'm disappointed, and angry, that it has taken so long to learn the real history, and that the "official" narrative distorts history by lies and omission. A Black American living in London, George Padmore, a leading critic of colonialism pointed out that while European democracies were critical of fascism in Europe, their imperialism imposed fascistic authority over the colonised. This is perhaps why, " when Europe was occupied everyone is reminded of how there were resistance movements but somehow an ancient Black kingdom that knows its own rugged lands were unable to mount resistance." Because as soon as the war against fascism was over, it was "business as usual" in the colonies. For example, the Dutch tried to reassert their previous role of masters over the former Dutch East Indies. Which was met with resistance, as did the French in Indochina, ultimately leading to the Vietnam War. Wish I could say that things have improved, but colonialism is still a thing and as soon as a nation want's to use it's resources to improve the lives of their people, you can bet that an attempt at ousting the government is never far off.

Another motivation for the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935 was the dire need of the Italians to MANPOWER ! The Italian colonial army in the horn of Africa comprised primarily native mercenaries called " ASKARIS " who were recruited mainly from Eritrea & to a lesser extent from Somalia ! They even served overseas in the Italian colony of Libya to suppress the insurrection against the Italian rule there (1911-1931) ! So the proclamation of emancipation & abolishing slavery in the lands under Italian control was more than an INCENTIVE for tens of thousands of slaves working under the yoke of Ethiopian authorities based in Addis Ababa to join the Italian army ! The fascist leader " Benito Mussolini " was NOT morally considered by the western measures then a peer of president " Abraham Lincoln " in the US ; or Tsar " Alexander II " in Russia emancipating the African Americans & the Serfs , respectively ! So that flux of manpower from Ethiopia is all what Mussolini needed to establish an Italian empire in the horn of Africa , build formidable armies of native recruits & laying infrastructure for future military expansion in Africa ! Britain in its own right was concerned about securing the maritime trade in the Red sea & the Indian ocean all the way through the Suez canal in Egypt , protecting its colony in Somaliland & maintaining its naval routes towards India ! As the politics between Britain & fascist Italy grew tenser through years , the Italian invasion of Abyssinia was considered by the British as a game changer for the balance of power in east Africa & the middle east !!! The specter of the Italians blocking the maritime trade in the red sea was looming in the horizon ; while deploying large armies of Ethiopian recruits on the western borders of Egypt with Libya was a nightmare for the British military presence in Egypt ! The British in turn strongly supported the Ethiopian emperor (Haile Selassie) & his regime during the war to repel the invasion ! They went on to sign the (Anglo - Egyptian treaty) with the Egyptian government in 1936 which mandated a mass army recruitment campaign of Egyptians from many social classes that had NOT been previously allowed for several generations to join the army as they were considered less loyal to the government to take rank in its army ! A similar mass army recruitment campaign was set by the British in their colonies of Kenya , Uganda , Tanzania & Somaliland to raise massive armies in order to counteract the Italian expansion in Africa ! When Nazi Germany & fascist Italy signed a pact of alliance in 1939 , the stage was set for an axis war in Africa spearheaded from the Italian colonies in east & north Africa !

It saddens me that you don't care what happens in reality. As the article I listed notes slavery was abolished by the local Ethiopians in 1942 when the British put the deposed king back on the throne. They only effectively abolished slavery because of the constant outside pressure as noted by the League of Nations at that time.

@g g No, The reality simply disagrees with Ethiopian Christian sources (again). Ethiopians were discriminative of their southern ''neighbours''. The reason behind this is because they saw them as inferior. The reason behind this is skin colour... Yes, you heard me right, skin colour. The Southern part of the Ethiopian Empire was inhabited by people with more ''African'' features while the ''Northerners'' were ''whiter'' than their neighbours. Thus, The Southern people were discriminated against and enslaved and sold on slave markets or were the victim of genocides due to the Ethiopian conquest.

@g g you do know that slavery in the US was also domestic. Slavery is slavery still and to hold some people in some sort of bandage is very wrong regardless of what you force them to do. My grandmother was enslaved by the Germans at this same time as they colonized Poland. She was essentially a domestic servant to a German family. How do you think she views her experience as being a slave to the people who were not all too foreign? It was just what 20 years earlier that my ancestors were in a similar position under the rule of the German and Russian empires until they all collapsed in the wake of the first world War. What Africans were doing to other Africans, was morally repugnant and for you to just ignore that and to be so flippant is just disgusting.

In the end, the Italians may have won the battle; however, the Ethiopians won the war despite their technological disadvantages. He told me of a story of meeting his majesty at the age of 10 by accident when he decided to take a short cut through a farm field after school not knowing the king was there that day. He said when he saw the king he started running away and the king sent his gaurds to catch him to find out why he was running. He told the king because he knew he was a great man and he got scared. Hearing this his majesty gave him 100$ which was enough money to but meat for one month and told him when he grows up he is going to be a great man! And when he got home his mother got scared n confirmed if the king had been there n he was! Obviously his majesty had some spiritual insight too! We in Ethiopia have one of the oldest versions of the Bible, but however old the version may be, in whatever language it may be written, the word remains one and the same. It transcends all boundaries of empires and all conceptions of race. It is eternal. No doubt you all remember reading in the Acts of the Apostles of how Philip baptised the Ethiopian official. He is the first Ethiopian on record to have followed Christ, and from that day onwards the Word of God has continued to grow in the hearts of Ethiopians. And I might say for myself that from early childhood I was taught to appreciate the Bible and my love for it increases with the passage of time. All through my troubles I have found it a cause of infinite comfort. “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” ~ Who can resist an invitation so full of compassion? Because of this personal experience in the goodness of the Bible, I was resolved that all my countrymen should also share its great blessing, and that by reading the Bible they should find Truth for themselves. Therefore, I caused a new translation to be made from our ancient language into the language which the old and the young understood and spoke. Today man sees all his hopes and aspirations crumbling before him. He is perplexed and knows not whither he is drifting. But he must realise that the Bible is his refuge, and the rallying point for all humanity. In it man will find the solution of his present difficulties and guidance for his future action, and unless he accepts with clear conscience the Bible and its great Message, he cannot hope for salvation. For my part I glory in the Bible. - H.I.M. Haile Selassie I

@@jackkelso4611 that is really weak equivalency if I ever seen one. bullets only hurt individuals and they were used as response to what italians did. but Italy did far more: they used chemical weapons. executed prisoners by the thousands, bomed red crosses, killed millions of cattle and burned crops, they litarlly hanged villagers to create fear. they did every trick they got to win but in our eyes, they were cowards who feared to face ethiopians with all the advantage they got. let's not forget; not only they had perfect geography to advance to Ethiopia but they got almost unlimited trained soldiers from colonies while ethiopia depended on farmers and people in other occupations to become soldiers who received little training, and the huge arm advantage they already had like veicles, war planes, tanks, weapons.

That is fake propaganda, there are no documents witnessing the usage of gas during the war, italy won because Ethiopia was a third world country, fighting with rocks and sticks, while italy had tanks, airplanes, and good generals. There are only suppositions regarding gas usage, and lots of historicians have found documents that showed that small amounts of gas where used only against rebels in the mountains AFTER the end of the war, that were hiding in holes and small trenches.

I'm proudly antifascist but the using of gas has been almost insignificant for the result of this war. Actually, in 1936 Italian Army was still technologically good and as developed as English, French and Germany ones. The air force in the 30s was top tier in the world. The technological and tactical gap started after Nation's Society sanction because of "autarchia" fascist stupid idea that a country with no natural resources could be economically self sustainable and independent

It again shows you the huge importance of an air force, and technological means, you can't find someone with rocks & sticks with they come with tanks and planes, this is why Spain gained such huge territories in the Americas so quickly, on top of the diseases they brought with them, ans using divide and conquer tactics, not because the Spaniards were so formidable, rather their adversaries with so far behind, it was a mismatch, the same could be said for the situation in the middle east today.
