How Big is the Model 3's Trunk? 15 Cu Ft? More?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Tesla says the Model 3's cargo capacity is 15 cu ft including the frunk, but something's wrong with these numbers. Why? Because we fit more stuff in the trunk than any other 15 cubic foot trunk we've tested. This caused us to ask: just how big is that trunk? In this unscientific test we get some unscientific answers.

Numbers aside, having rented so many compact/mid-sized cars over my lifetime, and usually having packed them all to the gills, I can tell you just be watching this video, that the fact that this car has gas-struts on the outside of the trunk, instead of intrusive hinges elbowing into your gear when you shut the trunk, makes a HUGE difference in real-world cargo capacity.

THANK YOU! For this video. I was going to order a 2019 Model 3 performance and then did a Edmonds side by side compare. It showed the 2019 as 15 and the 2022+ at 22.3. And instantly thought I needed to f go with a 2022+. I have 17 cubic feet in my current sedan and I use all of it frequently. So I couldn’t loose any.

In my opinion, the only two cargo capacity metrics that matter are floor area and 24-inch roller bad capacity. Floor area is useful because groceries don't usually stack well, and 24-inch roller bags are a useful measurement for obvious reasons. Personally, I think absolute volume can be rather misleading, so I honestly don't care what that number is for the Model 3 or any other car.

It's hard to say. Some say yes, some say no. It could also be an early/late build difference since mine is almost a year newer than the Performance Model 3 we tested. Either way, it's a decently sized frunk.

I believe Tesla under-rated the cargo capacity in America , in europe the official combined cargo capacity is 542l ( 19.1 cu ft) and as per one of my country trusted car review magazine (their test are very exhaustive and severe) they where quite surprised that the model 3 measured usable cargo space differs little from the official data as many brands oversell their cargo capacity like with the I-pace that Jag says it has a 656 litres (23 cu ft) when the real measured usable cargo space is a puny 363l (12.8 cu ft) that is smaller than the rear boot of the model 3 measured as 378l (13.3 cu ft) + 72l of underfloor (2.54 cu ft) and the 58l frunk (2.04 cu ft) talling to an usable 508l (18 cu ft) . I don't know why Tesla underrated the cargo capacity , maybe because to not sway too many buyers from the model S , problem is that many are using 15 cu ft / 425l cargo space to review the car even in europe pointing it has an average boot when in reality the usable space is better than the majority of it's class and many compact SUVs.

How much could one stuff behind the rear seats between the headrest and back window? Could stuff a few soft bags in there I think? Also, what's a good roof rack and how much extra space might that give you? So, if the car provides 22 cubic feet, say, plus 2 between the rear seat and window, plus, say, 10 cubic feet on the roof, then one could haul like 34 cubic feet for a vacation for example. Perhaps there is a larger roof box still. Or - and I don't understand why we don't see this often, why not have a cargo trailer. Something not too too big, but probably might have like 50-100 cubic feet easily. Sucks when get to the destination and can't find parking for it, but why drive a big honking SUV when the times you actually need that space is few and far between? People drive WAY too big cars "just in case". It's so stupid.

ROFL...Obviously Alex is producing every possible Tesla video before the Model 3 goes bye bye. He's right about the slippery nature of measuring and comparing cargo capacity in any vehicle. As I recall, Car and Driver uses the number of ping pong balls that can be poured into a space to achieve something resembling a standardized measurement. And who can forget Alex' ubiquitous gallon milk jug test of center console capacity. How many people buy gallon jugs of milk? I don't know but my family doesn't. :) Furthermore, shape as well as overall capacity complicates things further. When I noted the extremely limited cargo space in the Mazda CX-9 on one KZread video, another poster noted that he could more easily fit his collection of hockey gear into the CX-9 versus its rivals despite its inferior overall cargo capacity. Perhaps a hockey stick measurement standard would be useful. In any event, Tesla appears to be following the excellent maxim of "under-promising and over-performing." At least in this particular instance. To claim less actual cargo space than is actually available is a first, I think.

Whenever I demo the 3, I show the storage to ladies first, and performance to gentlemen first. Strangely enough, that's the order most prefer, indicating some sort of gender bias. It shines in both categories, so no one is disappointed. So much fun to see them light up when I then go into details of ownership cost. It's a truly amazing feat of engineering run by the biggest bunch of fools imaginable. Odd.

I used to think that Tesla was the deal. After a wreck in the Houston area earlier in the year, I no longer have Tesla on my list. I think one needs to seriously consider the metals used in producing this vehicle. It is a combination of galvanized steel and aluminum. Might not sound bad, but the accident that occurred in Houston was bizarre due to the circumstances. The two men involved were not exactly typical young people out to try a student. Regardless of their actions prior to the accident what got my attention was how much of the vehicle was remaining after the car burned. Usually, after a car burns most of us are used to seeing the skeletal part of the car: the top, bottom, sides. with the flammable items burned away. Not the case with the Tesla, The only thing left after the car burned was the bottom of the car. There was not a roof of the car left. All of this had burned. So, that must mean that the roof of the vehicle must be made of aluminum. If that happens after the car catches fire what would happen if the car rolled? I suspect the occupant would be smashed because the aluminum is not strong enough to maintain its shape. Besides... electricity seems to be cheaper right? Where is the energy coming from to make the electricity? How is the power being generated? Proceed with caution
