How And When To Use A Snap Swivel, Clip Or Tie Directly
Спорт
Catch more fish by using snap swivels and clips correctly. Also, sometimes it's much better to tie directly to the lure.

TO PURCHASE SNAP SWIVELS/CLIPS - amzn.to/3vbLk9N
If you're fishing for bass a snap swivel is just fine. They keep the line from twisting and you can switch out bait very quickly. The bass really don't care about the hardware up front they just seem to change day to day on what they want to hit. So the ability to change out lures quickly and find what they're hitting on is key.

Nice presentation Dave. I am an avid fisherman, mostly walleye, but also pike, musky, bass, trout, ah heck, most anything that swims. I just love time on the water and fortunately my wife humors me, usually fishing/ reading. Anyhow, nice job. Btw, we have 4 girls, so watching you with you kids brought back a lot of memories. ✌🏻

Welcome to the channel David!
I have used a swivel/clip when fishing inshore my literal whole life. Every lure I have ever used is hooked up to a swivel with a clip on it. Have never had an issue or noticed. Fosh don't seem to care either. Ultra light up to 10 pounders. Have caught every single freshwater fish with a swivel clip. Makes changing lures super fast and easy.
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors
Жыл бұрын
Yes, it's an interesting subject. I've had tournament fisherman commented here how clips alter the sink/dive rate of lures, and they consider that a negative. Then I was just reading a recent issue of In-Fisherman and they were taking about using different size clips and even changing hook size to tweak the sink/dive rates of lures. Some comment here say you're missing on fish if you use a clip on crankbaits, but every time I see a video of Jon Thelen (of Lindy Fishing Tackle) using cranks he has a clip on his line. I pretty much do as I mentioned in the video. There certainly seems to be a lot of really good fisherman (fisherman that pay their mortgage by catching fish - tournaments, guides, seminar speakers, KZread teachers, pro-staffers) that do the same. But some really good fisherman do not. Thanks for the input.
This video is sooo well done . Thanks!

I tie the jigs and swim baits directly. Using a clip instead of a full snap swivel on cranks, spoons, and rooster tails is a good idea, and using a split ring on some of the swim baits or top water spinners, but not for frogs. Nice video.

Avoid snap swivels all together by putting swivels on the split rings of your lures. Minimal hardware, and you can tie direct so there’s no fear of bending it out. I do this on all my salmon spoons and so far 24lb lake trout haven’t been able to break em. They’ll bend out the hooks before they break it if your using a good split ring and swivel

I've been fishing for so long that I've learned my lesson, I just don't use lures that twist my line anymore. There are plenty of options to spoons and spinners that don't twist line. I just use a small snap when using lures, and a good rule of thumb is to use a snap or clip that is rated for at least double your line, or preferably a little higher, so 8lb line, use a 20lb snap.

I used to use snap swivels but over time just had too many pike bite-offs. So now I use a small micro or fluorocarbon leader on my lightest casting rig.
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors
Жыл бұрын
Cool
One good scenario where I use a snap swivel is when I'm using lures for northern pike because the short metal piece on the snap swivel acts sort of like a short metal wire leader for the line. and so it reduces the amount of bite offs you get if you choose to go with 30 lb test or any other lighter lb test by northern pike standards. because the swivel part of the snap swivel will replace the part of the line that they would have bitten if the snap swivel wasn't there to begin with.

Good stuff! Informative...1 quick question though ...when using a mono or floro leader, why not just tie line to line with a double uni or whatever knot? Thats less metal, and you can reel in farther. The metal on a swivel can't reel through the top eye of the rod. It could make it harder to fight a fish all the way
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, a lot of fishermen do it that way. My leader isn't very long, so when I reel up to the swivel it doesn't make casting difficult. I prefer this to having a longer leader with a knot. Even a small knot doesn't glide thru the guides perfectly. But if you feel a need for longer leaders the knot is the way to go, KPO.

@@Straight0uttaCrofton it doesn't. truth be told, you don't actually need a swivel, either. I run braid direct to a flouro leader on all my spinning rods and have not once used a swivel, even with inline spinners. It's good advice for the guys throwing mono or flouro, to be sure. Line twist is a huge problem with vinyl lines, but not hardly at all with braid.

Unfortunately where I live, 4, 6 and 12 inch coated steel leaders with swivel and snap clip are mandatory for the Pike and Walleye up here in Saskatchewan. They’ll nom-nom clean through your lines. Never had line twist issues either. I can’t imagine always cutting and re-tying my fishing line. 😳 I’m often switching lures too frequently for that nonsense...
