How Am I Going to Tell Her I'm Sorry? | Hope Works

As a child, Travis lived an idyllic childhood until his parents divorced. Feeling betrayed, he did all he could to anger his mother. When she died in a plane crash around his 12th birthday, he was overcome with guilt for his behavior. The feelings were so oppressive that he wondered how he go on. Pulling a picture of her from his wallet, he read a note in her handwriting: “Remember the good times.”
He said in that moment that he felt her forgiveness. He felt consumed in heavenly love, and the burdened lifted. He felt to remember every good time by recording his memories in a journal. To this day, he said, now 30 years later, he can still recall the great association of the good times.
Travis learned that the atoning grace of Jesus Christ and His consuming love vanquishes painful regrets that had seemed debilitating and without hope to resolve.
He learned the power of forgiveness and how it eases guilt. Happiness, as his mother taught him, is a choice, a far better one than choosing to focus on tragedy and grief and misfortune.
At the moment of his greatest grief, as he sat contemplating how to go on in life with such oppressive guilt, Travis learned firsthand that the Lord can answer prayers with overpowering love.

Reminds me of a quote from President Packer: "We all make mistakes. Sometimes we harm ourselves and seriously injure others in ways that we alone cannot repair. We break things that we alone cannot fix. It is then in our nature to feel guilt and humiliation and suffering, which we alone cannot cure. That is when the healing power of the Atonement will help."

Travis Ashby ...Thank you for sharing your story. HF used your experience to help my son & me reconcile except he was the one who died at 16 & I continued to live. Our circumstances were similar in that he was so angry with me for leaving his dad. Your words became his words & I have felt his presence on several occasions comforting me. I am grateful to a loving HF whom I know is real and loves us more than we can understand at this time. I am grateful for the Savior Jesus Christ who is truly the finisher of our faith! I am grateful to know we will both see our much loved family member again! Blessings to you dear brother and may the peace Christ promised us be with you all your days!

Very true, with God all things are possible. We're just talking about him, what the Lord has done for him to recover from the devastation he went trough as a child with his mother. By no means his mother was saved and is in heaven, that's guaranteed. I hope people realise the difference between God recuperating a person, in this case a child, through the means of his mothers picture and the Holy Spirit touching his heart to get over his guilt. The salvation of his mother on the other hand is obviously clear, she didn't walk with the Lord. If he believes his mother is saved, he must be serving another god, not the real God, trough Jesus Christ of Nazareth. The coming of the Lord is VERY close, repent and turn to Him with all your heart.

Things that come to mind... - Give people the benefit of the doubt more. A lot more. Especially family. - Time management. Don't waste time with resentment. The time we have is precious, and we never know when we or our loved ones will get the call. - Forgive. Even if you're never asked to. (What a tough one!)

Thank you for sharing. I was just going to send a note to my husband who suddenly ended our marriage 4 months ago with no discussion. I was going to say things to hurt him as I am hurting. I wanted him to feel the guilt & regret for the pain & financial hurt he has inflicted on me. I am praying that one day I will be able to forgive him & myself for my mistakes too.

Going through this type if trial I had found kindness turned things around for me. His behavior towards me changed. The biggest thing I found was I didn't rely on him for my happiness anymore. This is a road. Rely on Heavenly Father and yourself. Fast like you've never done before to find the strength and it will be there❤. I personally needed to hear your story to remember what I was capable of. Thank you for sharing Rae.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful story. I'm a convert of 34 yrs. My parents got divorced when I was 7/8.. I was devastated when my parents separated and couldnt figure out why? .. My heart was hurt for yrs.. I only saw my dad a hand full of times over the yrs. As I became a teenager, I felt lost. My thoughts we're, I never want to get married or have a family. Yrs later, I needed a father figure to fill that void. I met a fellow in a bar. I love to dance and socialize. He was going through a divorce. I had no idea he was a member. We connected. He had a 10 yr old daughter. We eventually got married in the United Church in 1980. I wanted to marry him a 2nd time. I felt that something was missing. I investigated the church. We had 3 kids. I took discussions. I had no idea he was a Member, not active for yrs, but he supported our kids and me attending a local church. He baptized his oldest daughter and myself. Amazing experience. Our little family were sealed in 1988. All 3 of our adult children & grandchildren are inactive. I feel a void in my life. I know my HF loves me, gives me peace. I committed to the church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Saints. Without my Testimony & the Church I'd be lost. I love my Savior and church. I'm grateful for the Gift of Life that gives me peace & comfort. I'm Eternally grateful for my Family & my trials.

Our relationship with Them through prayer gives us peace and hope. Thank you Brother for sharing your story.

This is a great example of why we need to watch our words and actions towards other people. Because sometimes we may put ourselves in a situation where we don't have the opportunity to apologize or make things right if the person that we attacked passes away. Living with that kind of guilt is not good and can bring us unbearable grief and put us into compromised personal situations. This proves to me that when God commanded us to forgive one another, He really loved us by asking us to do so. His infinite love continues to amaze me and make me feel so special! 💜🙏🏻 God bless you all! 🥰

And now there close to 80 and so loving to my siblings and I and there 8 grandchildren ! don't wait until "tomorrow" to make up with someone that you hurt or someone that has hurt you because if "tomorrow" never comes and the other person is gone, regrets will eat you up inside. It is best to make up with persons today.

I went thru two divorces. Both of which I did not want and fought hard to prevent. It broke the hearts of my four young sons. I finished raising them as a single mom and eventually married and my current husband and I blended our family of nine sons. Now 17 years later we have many grandchildren and tho there are scars - Gods blessings have healed much and replaced tragedy with beauty and joy. It’s an ever tender mercy that God has a back up plan when our dreams are crushed. I love this account. I love the atonement which heals our sins and the victims of others transgressions.

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful uplifting story. It’s amazing to me how every one of you that participates in this Hope Works series is meant to be. I know without a doubt that this message was created for my nephew who is 12 and being very rebellious and mean to my brother. His mom has a big influence on his behavior. Weeks ago I felt prompted to tell him to be kind to my brother because I wouldn’t want him to feel guilty if he were to pass away. My brother is also sick. So when I heard this story I was at the gym and started to cry because I knew without a doubt that this message was for him but also for me. Thank you for sharing with us. God bless!

That close bond with Heavenly Father to be able to actually #HearHim is one of the greatest gifts to us. At whatever points in our lives that we find the gift, we must make sure to use it often for guidance that we may be led to light and comfort.

Wow that's story is Amazing I mean I underwent a little bit when my parents broke up in past but hearing that story of your mom in Heaven I mean when she suddenly passed away in that tragedy, wow it made me cry also It made feel better cause even if they are separated still now, they are alive and I quote his words the feeling of forgiveness is still here, it's amazing when you forgive someone, 👏 wonderful testimony for us with the same issues but Hope works just because hope is still here in the name of Jesus Christ and the love God's giving us is hopeful I mean when I hear some Christian Music or I read Scriptures hope comes to me and I feel peace like no one else can provide me. I would like to say again yeah Hope works anytime, last but not least Thank you for sharing this incredible testimony I know God is taking care of you all the time, Blessings for teaching us more about Hope and the meaning of Hope.

It’s hard to not judge those who hurt us. Sometimes people act so selfishly without consideration for others or proper communication, but honestly everyone is doing the best that they can. He had every right to experience negative emotions when his parents split. It would be hard to understand that as a child, if there wasn’t abuse involved. Also wow, I didn’t think I would tear up over this but I did when he read his mother’s note on the back of the card. She was really beautiful by the way. My family was abusive in many ways growing up. The dark times cause me a lot of insomnia, illness and mental anguish frequently. I like the idea of remembering the good times, because it wasn’t 100% bad all the time. I think I should write a list of good memories. It may be small but I think it will be meaningful. Honestly though, I wish some people wouldn’t have children though. I wish that everyone got a surgery to take away their ability to procreate when they hit puberty until they really wanted children and then would go in to reverse it. I wish church leaders would chill out about pressuring people to have kids before they are ready and especially if they don’t want kids. A lot of pain could be prevented if people were more thoughtful about their decisions and made them with good information. Our church focus is too much on expanding the population and building lots of buildings and needs to be more about parenting, educating and caring better for the people already on the Earth. It’s honestly the best thing we could do. I don’t understand why the church doesn’t seem to care about this as much as I do and I’m sure God does. In preventing Christ’s suffering, yes it’s important not to sin, but it’s equally important not to starve or be unsheltered, unclothed, uneducated, not properly nourished, without proper medication and mental and dental health care. I know that the church makes incredible efforts in these areas, but it’s honestly not enough when there are still so many people suffering from all these things. Honestly I wonder what the brethren’s thoughts on this are. The gospel is truth, all truth, not just the plan of salvation but truths that can be found through education as well. I’m not about giving handouts, that doesn’t develop self confidence, but education should be free. When the church starts providing that to people I will feel honored to be a member of it. Honestly I think God’s priority over having fancy homes on Earth for Him to rarely ever visit in person (temples) would be that all His kids here on Earth at least had their basic needs getting met and ample opportunities to make choices with in their lives to become independent and then help others. Literally the church just needs to teach correct principles and let people govern themselves. I wish everyone’s perspective on God would just change for the better now.

You just contradicted yourself. You went on and on about everything the church was doing wrong, including taking away the free agency that God gave them, and then in the end you say to teach people correct principles and let them govern themselves. .....well that is precisely what the church does.....teach people correct principles and let them keep the free agency that God gave them. Taking away people's freedom to have kids while the world is aborting them and abusing them at an alarming rate, won't help anything. Building the temples a little less beautiful and giving it to the poor won't help when you have a pandemic of drugs, permiscuousness, abuse, and other horrors happening in a large number of worldly homes. No you were right with your last comment, teaching people how to be good and successful is the only real way to pull people out of these messes, ....but people have to WANT to do it. Can't force them. The church is doing it perfectly.

He was a little boy dealing with one of the most difficult things that can happen to a family. He was going through a process, a natural and necessary process. I think the guilt on his end should be pretty minimal. If she had lived, he likely would have worked through his natural and necessary emotions in time. I'm concerned that this video sets up the expectation that children cannot experience and process their grief, and should be happy and never angry. As a parent who has gone through the process of divorce, and also active LDS, I got my kids good therapists to help move them through the anger. Yes, we say we're sorry, but the guilt is minimal. It's important not to shame people for their natural and necessary emotions. I know I'm repeating myself, but it's so important. He was a kid. It's fine.
