Have You Ever Felt Like a Failure? | Hope Works

When Richard went from a comfortable existence to living in a small apartment with his wife and young son, he realized he was a victim of his poor choices. He’s grateful for challenges that helped him grow and learn from the Lord.
It took a while. At first, Richard wanted to blame everyone else for his financial misfortune. When he realized that he was the problem and that he alone was responsible for the consequences of his poor decisions, he also realized that he was the answer.
He felt torturous anxiety for his plight and saw no way out. He prayed and prayed often. He knew he was loved by those around him, but he also felt imprisoned in a dark tunnel with no light at the end.
In time, he talked with others in similar situations to get their advice. One friend suggested that for 10 days he make a list of 50 things for which he was grateful. After the 10 days, he felt blessed and more confident, but he was still weighed down with burdensome darkness.
Another friend suggested he needed to learn to love himself and treat himself daily to something that made him happy, such as time spent with family and in nature.
All these things helped lift his spirits to take heart for his challenge. At times, he reflected on a placard from his childhood: “God don’t make no junk.” And he wasn’t junk.
He meditated on counsel from Church leaders to pray like all depended on heaven and to work like everything depended on him. “That’s what I did,” he said. He knew he couldn’t change the past, but he could go forward with humility.
As he cared for his wife and son and saw to their happiness, he noticed the darkness lifting and peace returning. He examined the Savior’s example in scripture, how He fasted for strength and direction. Richard began fasting one day a week for four years.
Now, more than seven years later, Richard feels he and family have emerged from their challenges. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” he said. “But I wouldn’t change a thing. It was during this time that I learned that no matter how high the mountains are or how great the obstacles, we can overcome.
“I’m so grateful I went through those challenges,” he says. “Instead of edging God out of my life and blaming everything on Him, I took advantage of those trials to become closer to Him, to become more of the person He wants me to be.”
Remember, he said, “God don’t make no junk.”

This is so good! My hub and I were just talking yesterday about how much we grew from the 2008 financial crisis as individuals, but also as a family. My husband was a full-time real estate investor in Utah when it hit... OUCH! We were literally saved by the grace of God to not go utterly bankrupt, but just barely! There were many tight years in the interim, tight years that built character and perspective and wisdom in us and in our children. We see the hardships we went through as nothing but a blessing, now. Our general philosophy with money has become this: be stingy with yourself, and be generous with others. There is so much abundance outside of material possessions! I have always loved President Monson's talk about living the "abundant life", because it is easily within most of our reaches. And for those that it isn't, we can help.

For a while, I have been letting pride get to me. I told myself that I could do things without the help of my savior. It's been such a struggle. I'm so glad that I have subscribed to this channel because even after getting a notification that seemed to fit my situation I still did not want to open it- that was until now of course. The title of this video had matched me so mysteriously well. I've been prideful but I'm slowly learning to humble myself unto the Lord and seek help. It takes a humble heart to put aside time to say your prayers and a diligent mind to be able to fall, get back up again and keep going. Thank you guys so much for these wonderful videos! They help so much

I am certainly not trying at all to justify my passed actions but I know for me unfortunately I seem to learn lessons the hard way....I was never more appreciative for and to the Savior when I stepped away from His gospel and found my way back. Pride is a huge stumbling block for us as humans. Now when I pray I ask that I may remain humble in my life rather than being compelled to be humble🤗

I heard something similar once: "I am a child of God, special, unique, and worthwhile: Special, because I am a child of God; unique, because no one else on earth is exactly like me; and worthwhile, because, as a creation of God, I know that God doesn't create any junk."

I've been victimized by 2 men with mental disorders who by their actions made it clear that they didn't believe I was of worth or enough or deserved to be loved!! By doing theraphy technices I was able to rediscover my own worth and was told that the lord loved me more than I could imagine!! this has helped my friendships around me!

Why is it that when you feel as though you have the answers, you sometimes push aside opportunities to be touched? I Don’t usually stop to view the Hope Works at Home videos...because I already “know” the information that will be shared, that I already have That Answer. I am so glad the promptings were strong enough today that I DID stop scrolling for recipes, and housekeeping tips, and WATCHED this video. It is definitely THE place I needed to be today; gave me new eyes to see today, and offered me blessings I am in need of TODAY.

It’s strange, but I think answers come to us when we humble ourselves, soften our hearts, and spiritually reach out to the Lord. I can’t quite explain it, but it happens every time I allow myself to do this. And the Lord just waits there to help pick us up, but we need to reach out.

There was a time in my life a few years ago that I found myself alone. Depression set in and I considered suicide, but Jesus came into my life and He was all I had. Over a period of time, He lifted me out of the pit, and I realized He was all I needed. If not for God I would probably be dead, but things have gotten better lately, and I will never forsake The Savior! I realize now that I wasn't alone at all, He was there with me all the time. I just had to call on Him and trust Him to help me get through the hardest times of my life.

I have personally found there is a difference between my own trials and the trials that I share with God, if that makes sense. No matter what... life is going to try us all, but wouldn't I rather have purpose, direction, and more importantly hope while climbing out of pits and over mountains, instead of relying on my own strength? Thanks for sharing this, I needed it.

The ONLY thing we, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have control over AND are invited (under covenant) to do EVERY SINGLE WEEK is to "always have his Spirit to be with us". That, to me, is the ONLY proper measure of any success in this mortal probation. Every other 'good thing' falls under the category of righteous desires and (to me) are not measures of either my success or failures--in the least bit.
