How Abraham and Melchizedek Point Forward to Jesus • The Royal Priest Series (Episode 2)

Melchizedek is one of the most intriguing characters in the Bible, first introduced in the story of Abraham. He’s a mysterious priest king who rules a city that will later be called Jerusalem, and he gives God’s blessing to Abraham. In this video, we’ll explore how Melchizedek fits into the larger biblical theme of the coming royal priest.

The Holy Spirit in the Bible is a witness, a helper, a comforter, and Sword. He speaks of Jesus Christ and doesn't ever manifest, because He moves invisible. Melchizedek is a curious figure in the Bible, first introduced in the story of Abraham (Genesis ch. 14). He’s a priest king who rules in Salem, the pre-Israelite city that will later be named Jerusalem. In contrast to the kings around him, he recognizes Abraham as God’s chosen one, and he gives him the gift of a feast and God’s blessing. Abraham is so enamored with this royal priest that he gives him one-tenth of all his possessions (Gen 14:18-20). What’s this all about? One helpful perspective is to remember that the story of Abraham is being told from the perspective of an Israelite author living centuries later, someone who knows the story of King David’s rise to a royal priesthood, and of Solomon’s sponsorship of a royal temple in Jerusalem. When David brought the tabernacle of God’s presence into the city, he dressed like the high priest (see the stories in 2 Samuel 6), and God promised to give him a royal lineage of kings that would produce a descendant who would build a temple to Yahweh that would last forever (see 2 Samuel 7). In the Psalms scroll, David reflects on God’s promise (see Psalm 2, 72) and says that this descendant will reign forever because of Melchizedek (Psalm 110). The story in Genesis 14 has been designed to anticipate the much later stories about David and God’s promise of a royal priest who would come from David’s lineage. This theme was important to Jesus, who claimed to be that anticipated royal priest (see Jesus’ discussion of Psalm 110 in Matthew 22:41-46), and this allowed Jesus’ followers to see how Melchizedek pointed forward to a future priest king (as in Hebrews chs. 7-8). Many scholars today think that, even though some parts of the Pentateuch could be attributed to Moses, it was a later author that put them together and edited them to form the books we now know (remember Moses’ death is described in the end of Deuteronomy). In selecting what mosaic texts would be a part of the Pentateuch and how they’d be organized, the editor could convey a message to his own generation about God’s plans for Israel (and, in this case, his plans for the Davidic line).

    @@brandyn5024 No. But Melchizedek does foreshadow Jesus in many ways. Most notably, he is a priest of God. To Israelites their priesthood was based on inheritance from the line of Levi. Jesus was not a Levite, he was from the tribe of Judah, a descendant of the king of David. So Jesus could not be of the Levite priesthood. But there is another example. Melchizedek, which is why Jesus is called a priest in the Order of Melchizedek. This is why scripture points Melchizedek having no lineage. His priesthood, like Jesus' is from God. Also Levite priests were forced into retirement. Again like Melchizedek, Jesus' priesthood has no limits.

    @Potato Very interesting. Hate to break it to you but Roman Catholicism may be the greatest deception under the form of Christianity ever presented to human kind. Their doctrines defined in the Decrees and Council of Trent, Lumen Gentinum (Canons 1,3,5 and 6) clearly states they worshipping a Jesus DIFFERENT from what the bible says. Canon 6 states the Catholic people to worship and adore the wafer and bow down to it. Contrary to Jesus seated on the right hand side of God having the nature of God. (Exodus 20:4-5 & Jeremiah 1:16 & 1Corinth 10:19-20) Secondly, their central doctrine on people directly praying to, communicating with, and asking, the spirits of dead people to intercede for them with God. We only have ONE mediator between God and men and guess who that is? Definitely not Mary or any so called saint! [1Timothy 2:5-6]. Lastly but not the least, the mass considered an actual sacrifice of Jesus each time is celebrated. Re-sacrificing Him. Pagan ceremonies. [Heb 9:24-28 & 1Peter 3:18] Also labelling Mary as " immaculate" which means "without sin"? UNBIBLICAL and demonic teachings. Pray the Holy Spirit directs you and open your eyes and millions of people around the world to the truth re the unadulterated gospel of Jesus Christ. The bible is God's final authority in our life and all our actions!

    Another very intriguing video, revealing the meanings of the Biblical stories as God's inspired word. From what I understand, Melchizedek is the last of a Canaanite priesthood, loyal to Yahweh, as the one and only monotheistic God. Over time, this priesthood had become corrupted to polytheistic worship, thus leading to them being expelled by the 12 tribes, from the Promised Land. It would seem that Jesus is described as being like Melchizedek, a priest who is not descended from the tribe of Levi, but a High Priest nonetheless. Hebrews 7:17.

  • @maxaplin4204

    @@maxaplin4204 You're very correct, and as I stated in my comment, there is a 'school of thought', that there was a Canaanite priesthood, the last of whom was Melchizedek. The Canaanites became polytheistic, with Melchizedek being a loyal remnant of monotheistic worship. Recently, there has been uncovered in Jerusalem, what is thought to be the remains of a Canaanite 'house of worship', complete with a sacrificial altar.

  • @eew8060

    @eew8060

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Rockjamify There is also a "school of thought", an ancient one, that Melchizedek was a spirit person. In the 11QMELCHIZEDEK scroll he is a presiding officer in God's heavenly court. They could have been elaborating on a possible Hebrew reading of Psalm 110 where vs 3 could be saying "You are a priest forever by my order O Melchizedek" (from James Kugel 'Bible Traditions') I think Melchizedek as a divine person, God's high priest, is more plausible than the canaanite priest theory. Its grounded better in scripture

  • @Rockjamify

    @Rockjamify

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@eew8060 Psalm 110, is an Oracle to the Davidic King, where the first 4 verses are prophetic in regards to Jesus the Christ. Jesus Christ is the "...eternal priest after the pattern of Melchizedek," he has become our new High Priest, interceding for us before God the Father. Hebrews 5:5-6. The references in the Book of Hebrews, makes it clear who is being proclaimed in the Oracle of Psalm 110. At the same time, Melchizedek was both King of Salem (Jerusalem), and a Priest of Yahweh. In his dual roles, Jesus the Christ is compared to this ancient man, since he is also Christ the King, and the new High Priest, who is not of the order of the Levites, just as Melchizedek.

    Here's something interesting: Mount Moriah was purchased to be have a temple built there. The temple was not built on the exact same spot as Abraham almost offered Isaac. That honor is reserved for another location, which some say is the exact spot where God offered Jesus. So not only does the event point to Jesus as a prophetic picture, but it is done in the same spot - which I think is also prophetic. If you are a Jew/Hebrew looking at this happen, if you knew the significance of the spot where Jesus was crucified, you probably would have believed in Jesus rather quickly.
