Who Is Melchizedek?

Is Melchizedek a priest-king in Salem, the pre-incarnate Christ, Shem, an angel, a heavenly redeemer, or the Holy Spirit? Various Jewish and Christian traditions identity him as all of these. In this video, Chad Bird draws upon his two years of research into ancient literature about Melchizedek. He takes us through the OT and NT evidence, the Dead Sea Scrolls, 2 Enoch, Josephus, and Philo to help us better understand this mysterious figure and to identify why he played such a prominent role in the Letter to the Hebrews.
Here is Chad's thesis:

    IMO it is that the English texts of The Bible are 'Under Translated' in that they did not givve the meanings of things that look like the names of persons and things. "The Order of Melchizedek" means: 'Those people dedicated to The King of Righteousness, The King of Peace having true understanding of that King". Only The Son knows The Father, The King of Peace and Righteousness. Christ Jesus is of a group... The Order of Melchizedek. Being there is only one Christ Jesus for this Earth, this requires that YHVH has multiple Earths. Peace.

    I am so glad you add that statement at the end. I just started really learning about the Bible around four years ago. Maybe because I’m a retired teacher, I do my own research and I bring Xeroxes of articles from my own books and I print articles from websites where there is an expansion or just a simple explanation of what we are learning in class. My current teacher totally ignores the printed material that I pass out to my classmates. I have an image I use with friends sometimes-“Bible blinders.” I just recently brought in an essay on the different approaches used to study the Bible, and I think it’s a shame that students wear these blinders and are taught to intentionally ignore other sources that could help elucidate what they’re reading.

    You are right about being an interpretation because is all that it is. Read The Book Of Melchisedek by yourself and find out how clearly and simply Abraham calls and acknowledges Melchisedek as The Messiah. Do not let anyone put their own ideas into your head without verifying the facts by yourself. Of course it can sound logical, but there are many opinions that "sound logical" and are totally the opposite. In The Book Of Melchisedek it cleary states AND EXPLAINS how all happened and how Melchisedek and Jesus are the same person!

Abraham does not beat around tbe bush, he clearly states and acknowledges Melchisedek as God himself. Not based on human ideas or "translation services". Let the word speak for itself.

    Melchizedek was a title given to an incredibly righteous man. That title means king of righteousness or prince of peace. We know he was such a great man that through his hard work and effort he was able to help change a very very wicked people and turn them to a very righteous people. If you ask me we could sure use a lot more Melchizedeks now. People who are willing to bring peace and truth into the lives of so many others.

    Outstanding master blessed thesis .. many valid questions arise from the the pre diluvial conception and his post diluvial survival,.... within the context of their understood concepts of those days, not having a father doesn't mean not being a progenitor involved and not having a mother means the woman was never able to stand up in her feet/nor project her new born into the Cosmos after birth, ( a fully developed child was delivered after labor from an already dead pregnant woman, .. still could happen in our modern days )all of Melchizedek conception and birth stayed at an earthly ground and a possible underground level, ...due to the pre diluvial timing involved, maybe a science-'Fiction' book is the easiest and safetiest way to lead us into a more comprehensive understanding in present time....

    Outstanding, scholarly and unbiased presentation, thank you. Chad, are you familiar with Eli Shukron's excavation in the City of David which he styles as Temple Zero? It's dated to the Middle Bronze Age (the age of Melchizedek and Abraham and the [natural] destruction of Sodom). It was in the open, has four chambers and is an early Canaanite holy site. It has a grain and an olive press, an altar and a standing stone or Matzevah (possibly Jacob's Stone?). The late Dr. Earnest L. Martin, in his book "The Temples that Jerusalem Forgot" (2000), presents massive evidence that the Jewish Temples were in the City of David, with the Haram al-Sharif being the Fortress Antonia. I've recently come to the conclusion that Temple Zero is a Canaanite proto-Temple of Zion, located just above the Gihon Spring. Eli says that the Temple Zero was deliberately sheltered by walls and a stone ceiling and respectfully buried. Eli, however, does not dispute that the Temples were on the now traditional Temple Mount, but I think, as did Jews in the middle of the first millennia, that it was in the City of David. Whether Jesus' prophesy that there would not be one stone left on another was an actual prophesy or backed in, the quote wouldn't have made it into the Bible if it hadn't appeared that way. I think it's very telling that the first verse in Psalm 110 was quoted by Jesus in all three synoptic gospels, as his argument that the Messiah (???Melchizedek???) was not the Son of David. Speaking of Sodom, can you make sense of Genesis 14, which appears to conflate Malchizedek, the King of Salem, with the otherwise unnamed King of Sodom?

  • @chadbird1517

    @chadbird1517

    Thank you very much for this helpful, additional information. No, I am not familiar with Shukron's excavation, but I will gladly look into it. It stands to reason that there were temples in Jerusalem prior to Solomon's since the city had been the habitation of Jebusites before, who presumably had their own temple(s). Regarding Genesis 14: I do not think we need to see a conflation of the two kings, Melchizedek and Sodom's king, although the Melchizedek section (vv. 18-20) does seem to be an intrusive addition to the otherwise smooth narrative. I suspect what the author is doing is boldly contrasting the two kings. Sodom's king "goes out" and the first thing he says is "give." Melchizedek, on the other hand, "brought out" a gift and spoke a blessings. Given Sodom's reputation, this contrast between the two kings is likely deliberate.

    Just a slight word of caution. Don’t assume that the people of Salem at the time of Melchizedek were Jebusites. Jebusites aren’t mentioned as inhabitants of Salem in Genesis but in a generic way. An inscription from Mari in eastern Syria mentions the Jebusites as a local semi nomadic people. I think it very likely that the Jebusites originally moved about quite a bit but ended up conquering Salem and taking it over from the original inhabitants who Melchizedek was the king of.

    Melchizedek is a title, not a name, although since priesthoods were passed in lineage it could be thought of as a Sir-name or "last" name. Thus Melchizedek is not so much a person as a lineage. This can be seen in the oldest oral traditions, and Abrahamic texts. Equating 'Melchizedek' to a specific person is a little like referring to everyone with the last name 'Smith' as the same guy.

    The best explanation! Few questions for you... 1. Does Melchizedek have any known lineage to Joseph and/or Mary? 2. In Matthew 1:1-17 it tells the lineage of Jesus but through Joseph's decendents. If Joseph was not Jesus actual biological father, why would that lineage be written as so? Why not Mary's lineage. 3. Someone told me that Mary and Joseph were from two tribes made out of kings and priests. Is there any correlation in any of this?

    On one occasion I "caught a bit of lore" about Melchsedek as "King of Righteousness." In English we use the word "upright", more or less colloquially, to mean "righteous" or virtuous. Yet the essence of righteousness is, precisely, UPRIGHTNESS, in the sense of VERTICALITY. The Upright Man is the Vertical Man, the bridge between Heaven and Earth, this being is the essence of the priestly function, the function of the Pontifex Maximus, the Great Bridgebuilder. The cosmic bridge between Heaven and Earth is the Axis Mundi, identifiable on one level with the earth's axis of rotation, and on another with the human spinal column --- and since , in the Northern Hemisphere, this axis appears as the north pole, the direction of the North is the horizontal projection of the Axis Mundi itself. The Hebrew letter Tsade, from which we get Tzadik, "righteous or holy man," is associated with the North. Melchisedek is therefore situated within a constellation of symbols which includes Hyperborea, the Northern Paradise, as well as the lore of kundalini-yoga with its seven chakras, etc. The kundalini or Serpent Power is what is called in scholastic philosophy "potentia"; it is conceived of as lying coiled at the base of the spine, until it is aroused, and travels up the spine to unite with the Sahasrara at the crown of the skull, which is analogous to the sephiroth Kether, "crown", at the head of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The Hebrew word Leviathan, denoting the great sea-beast, also means "coiled"; at the Messianic Banquet, the righteous, at the great beach-party, will feast on the flesh of Leviathan. This symbolizes what is called in scholasticism "the motion from potency to act". Thus the "priesthood of Melchisedek" is the priesthood of those who who have fully actualized the potential inherent in the upright stature of the human form -- as Jesus did on the Cross, which is the Tree of Life of the New Covenant; this is what it means for Christ to be "a priest forever after the order of Melchisedek."

    The Serpent walks upright from the spring equinox to the fall equinox. He crawls on the earth from the fall equinox to the spring equinox. In a matter of weeks, he will again walk upright on his tail. Melchisedek can be spelled King Jupiter, the Lord of Justice. Saturn was called the King of Justice in some myths. El Elyon or Elon is typically associated with the summer solstice in the sign of the Lion (Elion). All the constellations became associated with Jupiter. Remember the story of Zeus taking the form of an Eagle (Aquila constellation) and carrying Moses/Ganymede to the top of a mountain. Moses, like so many other River God such as Osiris, Hermes, Noah, Janus, Bacchus, et., were personifications of Aquarius. The twin of these River Gods was associated with Leon the Lion. The Mo in Moses, means water and his name can be written as Muses, Meses, and Mises. The character Medad is two words of Me (water) and dad (lover) and refers to the southern constellations of Libra thru Pisces (the six nights in Gen 1). The twin of Medad (water lover) is Eldad which is two words of El (Ram) + dad (lover). Eldad, the Ram lover, refers to Aries and the season (summer) when the Ram is in conjunction with the sun. This is the six days in Genesis one. The writers created the seventh day by taking night one and adding it to the six days. This gave us the sacred seven as the signs Aries thru Libra. The remaining five signs (Scorpio thru Pisces) became the "winter" season where the Scorpion leads this five months/signs.

    Levi is the band of stars in Pisces and Simeon is the Southern fish (the one with the coin in its mouth that Jesus used to pay taxes. Etymology, which is our great sheet-anchor and only sure guide in mythology, shows us that "leviathan" is a compound of three distinct roots - levi = joining together, jah- the Sun, and than = a, serpent. Leviathan is that portion of the Sun's ecliptic called summer. In winter leviathan is cast into the sea to be hooked out in the spring. The dreaded season of winter may be the whale (Cetus) which swallowed Jonah, or the Sun, being the one most likely meant. Leviathan, we are told, sometimes meant Pharaoh; at other times it referred to Sennacherib, etc. (see Smiths Bib. Dict, Art. Leviathan). In Isa. 17.1, leviathan “is" that crooked serpent." What "crooked serpent?" Are not all serpents "crooked," one as well as another? Why this distinction? The adjective must refer to some permanent characteristic of the serpent spoken of, and as I know of no other "crooked serpents" than the orbits of the planets, I conclude leviathan is the Sun's ecliptic, or, what is the same thing, the Earth's orbit. This serpent is here shown. He may be seen in the frontispiece to Mallet's s Northern Antiquities. MW

    Well done Chad. A really nice presentation. By inference, the author of Hebrews is giving credibility to Christian theology concerning Jesus - who of course was a Jewish Rabbi. [The New Testament frequently refers to him as "Rabbi" - "teacher"] The idea is that the idea of someone being born without conception, without a father, as Son of God etc is not new: i.e. it is part of established authentic Jewish thought. On a totally different note. Is that a copy of the Kabbalah Centre English translation of the Zohar behind you?
