How a Mother Faked Her Daughter's Kidnapping for Money

Shannon Matthews, just nine-years-old, has been missing for over a week at this point. She was last seen at 15:10 on the 19th February, 2008, leaving Westmoor junior school in the small town of Dewsbury, in Yorkshire, England. This case will take you, as it took the police, on many twists and turns that would be unbelievable if the story was fiction.
How does a little girl disappear from her junior school without anybody noticing? You are about to find out.

I remember when I was a kid, 8 yrs old. My mom and dad divorced and my mum got custody, used us for a welfare check. She'd go to a "party" and disappear for 2 weeks. I was playing with a local girl and we walked along the train tracks to visit her uncle. She had a locket that she told me her mum could see and hear everything she did thru. So we were safe. The sun was coming down, and her uncle told us to head home. When we got back to our block there were scores of people out, looking for the "missing kids" after all of the furor, there I was, alone in the street. Nobody was looking for me. Nobody cared. It still hurts to remember, but I survived and will continue to do so. I now understand my mum had issues and it wasn't her fault. It was nobody's fault. It is what it is. Part of my story. May my heart never be hard.

She wasn't worried about her daughter because SHE KNEW where her daughter was the entire time....and she had the NERVE to waste valuable police and search and rescue resources, to find a child she didn't want found. This child was CLEARLY being neglected by these parents. And notice, when Mom is making her plea, she says "Your brothers and sisters miss you, Shannon and your Dad misses you" She didn't say ANYTHING about MOM, HERSELF, missing Shannon, though, did she? Instead, Mom is just dancing around the room to a stupid ringtone, watching her boyfriend play video games while EVERYBODY ELSE looks for her supposedly missing daughter. If I were Shannon's mother, I would not rest until my baby was safely back in my arms. I would be out there searching every single minute until she was found.

Grew up poor, a lot of the kids in our neighborhood were latch key kids but our neighborhood took care of eachother so we always felt safe. The older women knew our parents schedules and would sit together on one of their porches to relax/gossip and watch us whenever me and the other neighborhood kids went outside to play. They always made sure we were fed too like they were our adopted grandmas. We even had a couple of friendly and sociable cats we considered a part of our pack. They hung out and would follow us every where outside. Again, as a neighborhood we made sure they were fed and taken care of. We even called them our streets mascots. Dont get me wrong...my family was far from perfect and me and my siblings had a rough upbringing but memories like the positive ones above outway the bad. Sorry for the long message but their neighborhood made me feel nostalgic and just miss those days!

She all but abandoned those kids, but had to keep them around or she wouldn’t get the checks for drugs (obviously she wasn’t using it on beauty products) She most likely kept the guys around to do everything, until they finally got sick of her and left. And many adopt children just for money so they can also receive free money from government, our tax dollars. It’s infuriating to know lowlifes don’t love these children!! We have a case in America of the West parents. They adopted 2 precious little boys 3 and 4 and they disappeared. They even moved to a different state thinking no one would notice the boys weren’t there. They were born to a single mom who gave them up. Then we have the case of Summer Wells in Tennessee, who’s parents are allegedly on drugs and alcohol. It’s so embarrassing that the family lived in squalor!! Filthy house, yard, no sheets on the mattresses, etc. It appears that law enforcement dropped the ball!! The children even fought over food. The 3 boys were removed and are in the process now to be adopted.

I've never thought of it like this but WOW what an epiphany! You are absolutely correct! It's hard to truly wrap a sound mind around the way these socio/psychopathic monsters think. How does one come to the conclusion that it's easier to get away with escalating the abuse, if not just out right murder. Rather than simply just treating them a little tiny bit better when they reach such age. I guess it's the same individual that would begin such horrendous abuse & neglect in the first place. There should be laws and procedures in ALL countries for parents/women who are QUITE OBVIOUSLY popping out children for the benefits while simultaneously not applying those benefits to increasing the living situation of the "sources of revenue". Because you know some of them demons don't even look at them as human beings, let alone their own offspring, just $$$ signs. And since it's 2023 and people love to purposefully misconstrue words for personal physical/moral gain, let me clarify and say I am not saying all women or parents with several+ children do it solely for government assistance, but I am saying a disgusting amount of them do!

From what I've seen, those types of parents won't give up custody. They don't think of the children, they think of their bank accounts. I wouldn't blame the bio father too harshly. At least he didn't have anything to do with her horrific experience. If he didn't seek custody, maybe he knew he couldn't care for her the right way. Maybe he knew he couldn't handle the responsibility. Maybe he just didn't want to care for a kid. I'm just glad he didn't use her for a paycheck. It's like adopting a pet, if you can't care for it, don't adopt it. She wanted to live with him, so at least he treated her better than her mom and her pedo boyfriend. Hopefully he thinks about it before breeding again!

New subscriber. I'm from the UK and can clearly remember this case. I think you have outlined it accurately. She was born evil to the core, as were Craig and Michael, who were also involved. Craig deserved nothing but a life term, but maybe he has gotten that roundabout by being constantly recognised. How can anyone use their own child for such evil doings and bring her up in such squirrelled conditions and for the poor girl to be plagued with head lice? No wonder the poor little one was bullied. How on earth was Shannon supposed to be happy living like she was. The saddest part is that all the children were split up whilst in care. I hope in years to come, they can be reunited. I just hope Karen and Michael suffer for the rest of their living lives too.

You understand that just fine. There have been cases of adopted kids being mistreated or killed by the adoptive parents….it isn’t fair to the many good people who want to adopt, but there are a few bad mixed with the good, and the reason for the investigation before adoption is pretty clear. And would you have people apply before they make kids? And if that isn’t done….how would you enforce or punish that? And I am sure it would not happen, but having people apply and receive permission before kids opens up its own set of new issues, like….does the rich family get permission over poorer parents? So about the best we can do is ask people to be responsible and not have kids if not ready to provide good care, but we know some will still bring kids into bad situations.

I remember walking out of the local Asda superstore (which at the time was known as Walmart to Americans) and Karen was in there shopping and smiling and waving at people. She was being given free shopping by the store, and the locals who were shopping in Asda were all being sympathetic and wishing her kindness and hoping that Shannon was found. Karen seemed to be lapping it all up. I walked out to the media circus that was surrounding the store and was stopped by a reporter who asked if they could ask me a question, as a local, regrading the Shannon case. I remember saying "You don't want to ask my opinion", but the reporter said as a local, my opinion was valued. "I mentioned that Shannons mum likely knew where she was and was likely involved" to which the reporter smiled and nodded. They clearly knew. At the time I didn't know that the police even had suspicions and knew. Literally a few days later, Shannon was found. The locals on the estate are painted as being super helpful, and at times they were, but what was failed to be reported at the time was that they had rounded up on a local man who was deemed a weirdo. He lived alone and the locals didn't like him. Apparently he was blamed at one point for Shannon's disappearance and according to a client of mine who worked at the local A&E, the locals turned on the man and nailed him to a plank of wood. He was rushed in to hospital where the doctors and nurses were pre-warned about what the ambulance crew were about to bring in. Surprisingly this was never reported. (Just googled it and the story was picked up, but the police denied that the man had any links to the Shannon case, which is not what the local people heard!)

We became best friends in and out of the class room. The day he was kidnapped is was mother's day. He was home with is 77yr old grandma. When his older sister who was his legal guardian found them two missing she noticed the basket of laundry. Half of it was folded the other half wasn't. She noticed her grandmother's purse and all personal items were still there. But they were not. It was one of the hardest times of my life. It got to the point where my mom stops me from watching the news. His remains weren't found until 3 years later. His grandmother's remains have never been recovered. The sad part is we don't know the full story. Like how it happened or how it took place, or why. The only reason his remains were recovered was the guy that abducted him confessed to his wife who he kidnapped as well as his ex-wife and two elderly people. Before the police got to him committed suicide.

Each of us has different strengths and weaknesses identifying and responding to the behavior of others, based on our own experiences and our own values, etc. Some might completely miss manipulative behavior like this, some might see it but be overly sympathetic to it even if they're well meaning. Pointing out things like this can exponentially increase the useful take-away and overall positive impact of true crime content, (as long as it's pretty much objective and just an observation rather than derogatory or gossipy.)
