How a Son's Diabolical Plan to Kill His Mom was Exposed

On that Saturday evening, two mysterious gunmen would burst into the home and hold the lady, Shirley Merritt, and her son forty-seven-year-old son, Richard, hostage. Then, one of the gunmen became agitated and stabbed Shirley to death.
A robbery gone wrong? Or a complete fabrication? This was the version of events given by Richard Merritt as to how his mother came to meet her final end. Unfortunately for him though, nobody believed him, and they were right to be suspicious.

I think he was going to use the 2 weeks to escape his sentence and he just needed his mother to find him and aide in the escape. He might have even tried to get her to sign a will in front of him before he threw her down the basement stairs in a rage when she was not willing to lose the money she put up for him to get the conditional two weeks. If we knew how much she was on the hook for, maybe we could be fairly certain that was her issue with not wanting to help him escape. He had a half a plan which suits his situation of having less than half a brain

They copy other people's reactions.. but the red flags soon shine through. All the love we feel, whether for neighbours.. family.. pets... THEY NEVER FEEL. All that matters is getting what they want from people. Including their Mum. Remember your mum as often as you want. Talk about her. Keep loving her. You are blessed to have had the joy of experiencing Mum love. I'm in my 60s. I now say my mum was the love of my life! The judge went on a 20 or 40 minute rant (I can’t remember) calling him a narcissist several times, and calling him out before he was given the “opportunity” to make himself look even worse by addressing the court. I highly recommend watching it. Also, his lawyers worked pro bono for him this whole time bc they offer thier services for those unjustly accused, but you can see by then end thier just ashamed bc they know he’s guilty by the end when he’s being sentenced.

The mother was the enabler of the nan who killed her. She aided and abetted him. He knew he didn't have to try in school so was happy to be a failure. She sponsored him to the hilt and the good son couldn't bare to watch so fled the scene. She pampered him to death, her death. She created the monster.

Poor Shirley. It's sad she didn't see how awful Richard had become. Unfortunately her enabling and supporting his awful behavior did not help. But I have no doubt that Richard likely would have killed even if his mother never supported him. Glad to hear his ex wife got away from this psycho. RIP Shirley.

Coming New Year's my mother will be dead a year, she was 83 years old, I think I talked to her everyday and I feel her energy and spirit. So for someone to do this type of thing to their mother is just uncomfortable, brings tears to my eyes that he did this, damn if you can't trust family who can you trust.. RIP🎉🎉

There’s nothing wrong with helping your children, as long as you can afford it. Her son was the problem! The mother had no way of knowing what he would do to her. Her murder makes no sense and is beyond a tragedy. She seemed like such a sweet person. She had to be so confused. I hope she is resting is peace.

I couldn't help but think about the Murdaugh case the whole time I was watching this. Murdaugh was at least a little bit smarter about it than this guy though... Richard had stolen only around $450,000 so he's no where near Alex's league ... Hell, Alex would steal that much before breakfast.

It’s bad no matter how much he stole. If you’re expecting an honest lawyer and they steal your settlement, that’s an extreme violation of trust. People who sue aren’t always rich and they may have needed that money!

I turned out just fine so they won't die if they don't have new toys 24/7, or get every single thing they ask for. It's not complicated to say no, they will be better people for it and actual functioning adults too! I know right?! Who knew?! LoL

That's the kind of father everyone man should shrive to be and an unbelievably loving mother that everyone would love to have. If you're a good parent you sacrifice your own wants and desires and put your children first. In return if they understood a fraction of what you tried to instill in them, then you could pass away peacefully knowing you did you most important job. Or you do all that and they kill you for money.

Moral of the story: no matter how much you hate your family, think twice about whether you hate them that much. Robert Jr. lost his mom without ever getting the possibility to say goodbye. That must be very difficult.
