After bearing the brunt of public anger and international criticism over the 2019 protests, Chief Executive Carrie Lam now says she is “steeled” to meet any challenges as she spearheads sweeping changes in Hong Kong. In the fifth episode of Talking Post with SCMP chief news editor Yonden Lhatoo, Lam addresses concerns about where she is taking Hong Kong and defends her contentious legacy. Lam also won’t reveal whether she will seek a second term, though she does not sound like someone who is bowing out.

I always say, you can't prove that China broke any of the conditions of the Sino-British Joint Declaration. The document was intentionally vaguely written, so that governance could be flexible as the times change. Besides, the Basic Law is the final product and the legally binding document, not the 1984 declaration. The Declaration was fulfilled in 1997 with the BL's introduction as the new Constitution of the HKSAR.

Hong Kong is dying actually, businesses are leaving the City to relocate in China. 'In two three years we have flats in Kwu Tong.' It takes at least 10 years for land approval then it takes 10 years to build due to sewage pipes and road planning etc. I call BS on the 2-3 year schedule. Meanwhile they approve the building of 88sq ft flats (which no one will buy.) Most of her answers use minor deflections. 'It's a question of quantity and quality if we go for a very spacious unit requirement, we will build less' (You mean you build less inhumane towers. However, humane apartments can go up 40 floors where the surface area remains the same though-out each floor, not like single village houses. Also, yes 200sq ft is inhumane, she didn't bother to answer that one.) This is just a silly interview to improve her image before her reappointment. Beijing had to force these developers to handover the horded land in the New Territories to build the 15,000 transitional units. They are unwilling to change to make the lives of the younger generation better. Judging by the views no-one cares about her or her corrupt admin profiting over people's misery. Here she is praising these developers in order to get reappointed by the 0.2%. Yonden had to cut the interview, waste of time.

But there are also many more ppl moving into Hong Kong from China bringing in new economic demands. The hk population will continue to expand. Just look at the rebuilding of Kai Tak area. She was flamed for comparing protesters to parenting and raising children. She also called them people with “no stake in society.” I don’t agree with the riots but you don’t talk to frustrated people like that! She squandered her chances to placate the public by acting faster and not viewing her critics as children.

As someone with family from HK. Hong Kong people like to think they aren’t Chinese since they were subjects of Britain for 200 years and think they are better then mainlanders since their economy boomed while HK was used as the main trading hub of China. In essence, they look down on the mainland. But now, the mainland’s economic boom came 30 years ago and HK is becoming more irrelevant with China becoming the major power in the region with cities surpassing HK like Shenzhen right across the border from HK. Lastly, the political system that was used to subject HK citizens to British rule was left behind and used to continue to create this divide between the HK and the mainland. Also doesnt help when HK schools teach the youth anti-China stories

Let me try to help...throughout colonial history, Macau wasn't really very well governed. Portugal didn't quite know what to do with it, so they were happy to give it back and China had started staffing up the Macau government decades before the actual handover! When Macau returned to China, public order improved dramatically and the economy took off due to liberalisation of the gambling industry. Macau and Hong Kong were in very different states upon their return. Hong Kong worries about its own downfall from its peak of influence in the colonial era. Macanese view it as "the bad old days," and people never really spoke any Portuguese in daily life, not even in the colonial era. That's why Macau is happier than HK under China--they had very different starting points. Ironically, Macau has done a much better job preserving colonial architecture than Hong Kong.

Less rights will be given to HK over the years and everything that had made HK unique will disappear because of the mainland government. I use to live in Hong Kong for 7 years, right above the Olympic Station. And till this day, I visit almost every year to see relatives. Don't you dare say that the media is brainwashing the citizens of Hong Kong. During the protests, most people stopped looking at the media or even used it so China would not be able to predict the number or where the protectors will go. My grandma who is 98 years old, doesn't even know what Instagram or what Facebook is, she saw the newspapers headlines and started to cry. She started to cry over this decision. Now, I don't really truly know what Hong Kong means to the people since I was just a kid. But now as an American citizen, I am angry at China for not keeping the deal they had with the British. She used some really disparaging words to describe the 2019 protests before they turned violent-of course I fully agreed with the law-and-order principle once they did turn violent and started spreading lies about the cops. But since Carrie Lam’s term is not done I will wait for the end of her term to judge. If she makes great progress in housing, she may redeem herself.
