Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam apologises after extradition Bill protests | Full English speech + Q&A

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam apologised again on Tuesday (Jun 18) in the wake of violent protests against an extradition Bill she had promoted and then postponed. She said she had heard the people "loud and clear", adding that she wanted to "continue to work very hard ... to meet the aspirations of the Hong Kong people".

She knows she has messed up and is reflective and sincere in her apologies. The bill will not be revived. She is just trying to find a face-saving way out. Give her a second chance. People make mistakes. Replacing her will not necessarily lead to a better person.

Yes , Carrie Lam had made mistake in rushing things without having more feedback on a sensitive issue( It is still better than David Cameron’s unwise move in going for a resolution on Brexit ), But she can’t give in too much to some populist demand or the govt would face hell with the opposition party which will do anything to block any govt policies . This will be bad for HK as it will slow down their economic growth.

jacky tang I don’t think President Xi instruct her at all and Carrie Lam has said it was the SAR decision that decides the extradition law. Why? If China want this extradition law, she would have done it when HK returned to the mainland in 1997. Do u know why ? HK has been a hotspot of spies, Chinese fugitives and corrupt business ppl who escaped from China to HK since the British yrs. If there is an extradition law, it will implicate a lot of mainland high officials and their corrupt practices would be known and it may not be a good thing for the CCP, so there is no need for China to ask for this law to be implemented.

No more need to apologise. If rule of law and reconciliation is not forthcoming, let the security forces enforce it. At this rate of deterioration and discontention in the society, HK future will be bleak. Being a pawn in the ideology differences with China, you lose both sides. Foreign investors will hold back and so will China in maintaining and giving an economic corridor. What comes after Carrie Lam may be a tougher personality on these "protesters."

But do the people who protested even understand objective of the protest? There was an interview where journalists ask the protestants on the street what the bill was about and why they are protesting. Most people have no idea on the details or the effect of the bill, they speak only about anti China sentiment. So if you ask me, there no lack of understanding on why the people protested, as you easily pointed out, they don't want connection to CCP government. What's not clear is why those people are anti China and its government. Even the protestants don't know it that well themselves.

So you're saying these 2 million protesters are just taking to the street for a catchy 'turn of phrase'? You must really underestimate the knowledge and intelligence of the people then. And shame of you for simply discrediting their views simply because they are 'youth'. As well the youth in HK are more than capable and aware of what is going on, for you to brush off their views is disrespectful and rude. It sure is not just for a catchy phrase. I won't even go into the fact that many of these protesters are not just youth. This particular protest has been shown to mobilize MORE than just the youth, people of ALL ages have participated. Do your research, before you make a statement.

What is your freaking true motive? "

Carrie Lam carried herself pretty well, she answered every question thoroughly and logically. No reason for her to resign. She done many good work, just one out of hand mistake does not justify her resignation. She wanted the bill passed quickly before the murder criminal will set free out of jail this year. Due to this hurry, she miscalculated the impact and fear of Hongkong citizens, this she admits and apologizes. She also basically says the bill won't be passed within her term, and will eventually expire, so that is basically saying she is retracting the bill. Ofcourse due to political correctness she cant directly say she will retract, thats just politicians will never say never.
