@Sean Sebastian Another fine junk journalism! Remember the hidden fact that Hong Kong prospered in the past because of China, since mainland China historically was blocked by the Colonialist Anglo West, and can not export their products directly to outside world; thus Hong Kong came in, and basically acted as a middle man, relabeling products from China and taking commission on them. Besides, these Protest groups/ organizations that Capitalist West helps set up in place like Hong Kong are nothing more than the forefronts of Tit-for-Tat protocol in place, in times of event that their capitalist imperialist interests are threatened; what they basically do is unleash those watch groups and organizations as part of their all out effort to destabilize any region that they feel threaten or simply to expand their interests. Moreover, many ethnic Hong Kong people are working class folks who work for these Western interests, like Western companies and businesses. blog.chinadaily.com.cn/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=894096

What an idiotic title nyt could possibly come up with? Hk afterall is still part of China. If it’s head is not close to the central gov, which gov should she show her loyalty to? To Japan? The us? It’s like writing a piece of news and having a title of “Gavin Newsom is close to Washington”. NYT, could you please come up some meaningful piece that actually serves something else rather than propaganda? What about a piece of the shootings we have in the states and how those tie back to gun control

actually the bill isn't dead yet, more like suspended. During the press conference, she said暫緩in Cantonese, yet when recapping in English, she said 'the bill is dead' instead. 暫緩means suspended. In fact,he has been using different wordings to HK citizens and the foreign countries in the recent press conferences too. If you can, NYT, can you invite some Cantonese-speaking reporters, it would be easier to understand what she really means.

She has no power to withdraw a bill. Only the Legislative Council can vote or deny the bill. If CArrie Lam withdraws a bill without voting, she is violating Hongkongs legislative law and abusing her power. The protesters are asking her to do what they are against, abusing power.

There's many things we are protesting against these weeks, we have 5 demands: 1. full withdraw of the extradition law 2. withdrawal of the “riot” characterization of the 6.12 protests 3. unconditional release of all arrested protesters (since most were arrested for no reason) 4. formation of independent commission of inquiry into police behavior (due to police brutality + their absence of police identification proof) 5. universal suffrage

As a Hongkonger, I can attest that Mainland China is incredibly cunning (they can get you arrested for fabricated charges, so political prisoners may get taken for non-political reasons). Even if that is not the case here, we are a very paranoid people, considering our past relations with the Mainlanders. Forgive us for our paranoia, especially if you are not a Hongkonger, but WE LIVE A SINGLE BORDER AWAY FROM THE MAINLAND. We have every right to be paranoid, at the very least, or is *that* a crime now, like passing a protest site to purchase/collect schoolbooks and owning laser pointers? (Forgive me, too, for my snarkiness. City life has made me cynical.)

@@mng3941 No matter how cunning China can be, if its not a crime IN HK, like freedom of speech, or freedom of religion, then a fugitive cannot be extradited at all. It MUST be a crime of at least 7 years imprisonment IN HK for an extradition request to progress. And HK independent judiciary has the final say on whether or not the fugitive gets extradited. There nothing wrong with being paranoid. But to hold the city to a standstill, blocking roads, affecting businesses, economy, assaulting police, all theses affecting innocent people, then you are just destroying your city. And pointing lasers at peoples eyes is a criminal offence. A split second can cause permanent damage to ones retina. Police should arrest every single criminal shiny laser onto peoples eyes.

the main reason makes HK a financial center is its access to the giant market in mainland given by China. Foreign investment would never stay in HK if HK lost its mainland market and political priorities such as ‘0’ tax given by China. China could totally transfer this priority from HK to Shanghai. One thing you need be clear is that HK GDP only ranked 4th in China. There were several opportunities for HK to upgrade its industry. HK didn’t catch the chance and continue to rely on old industries which benefits from political/economic priorities assigned by China. If HK itself cannot work hard and focus on own development, no matter how violent they become, they cannot win their own future.

the fact that you see hk only at its GDP is pathetic, if Hong Kong is so unimportant to china, the PLA would’ve been shooting protesters like they did in 4th June 1989. The value of Hong Kong is, it is a WINDOW for foreign investment to go into china, like what you have mentioned, but also chinese money going out. I actually sympathise you all, cause you might be born in a world where information might be fake, and what you think the 100% of what’s actually happening the the world is in fact maybe 10% of the truth, so yall are born with that deficiency of identifying what’s right and what’s wrong. and your education taught you to only look at result but not the process and how things turn out to be the result you saw, this is portrayed in your respond to this video, you think HK’s value only lies on GDP. 少年你太年輕了

Lam is CEO of the Chinese SAR of Hong Kong, her direct superior is the central government of PRC, of course she has close ties to the ruling party CCP and part of her duty is report and advice Beijing on Hong Kong issues and Vice versa from the central government. The U.S. Presidential election is not a direct vote either. The party delegates of choses the nominees for the two parties and non party affiliated citizens are not privy to the the process at all. Furthermore, the electoral college system used for the election is not a demographically equally distributed with the smallest states still garnering 3 electors regardless of the population size. Compounding that, the candidate with the most vote in the state gains all the electors.

The question is not: who is she, but: what does she do. Obviously, she's leading Hong Kong away from democracy and into the totalitarian arms of China. Her being a devout catholic has nothing to do with it. Some devout catholics did great things, others were Nazis. To be clear: I'm not comparing her with either, I'm just saying that her faith doesn't matter, it's what she does with Hong Kong that matters. Hopefully this channel is about actual international politics and doesn't aim to be a human interest channel.

But it cannot give democracy now. Neither did the UK hold any elections to elect local Members of Parliament.UK acquired HK after defeating China in the Opium Wars. Even US benefited from the opium trade.

They seem to forget taking of their cultural lenses. Don’t get me wrong, NYT often holds a very high bar on their journalism in domestic issues (except recent headline ofc) . But for China issues, I would trust SCMP than NYT.
